Try one of teh key site DG, they had A3 at 50% off recently, so I am sure a few keys will be able to be bought cheaply..

hey guys, do many people still play arma 2 ? or would I be better to go straight into arma 3 ? but im not sure how my system would handle it, I have 8 gigs of ram, an AMD Phenom processor, X4 965, 3.40 GHz and a 2gb 6950 gpu

Yes people still play Arma 2 but tbh you are going to struggle with that cpu.
Been playing Epoch on a hardcore server. Quite like it until the AI get a 1 hit kill on you or you dsync down a ladder and die lol!
Going to have a good crack at it in the morning after work and see if I can get enough krypto to buy a motor!

I'm still playing on a server called "The Colony Epoch" which is pretty decent. I had a decent setup ontop of a power station (one of the big towers) and picked a few people off till they reset it one day
Then tried to go around and find others to team up with and everyone shot on site
Also had someone glitch up one of the army base things and kill me instantly Still good fun though, I like how easy it is to find weapons etc, although I have trouble finding pants mostly..
