Arsenal sign Reyes

Excellent signing for Arsenal and has been said before, an excellent coup for English football in general.

Of the two major signings in the transfer window of the top two clubs in England, I think Arsenal have the better deal.

Can't wait to see him play over here and also nice to see someone other than Chelsea signing this kid

Thats what we like to see!!

Fantastic talent coming to the prem again and well done to Arsenal in signing him and especially that god damn Chelsea lunnie didn't get his hands on him.

Great business and hope to see him up front with Henry very soon....well not against us anyway ;)

I'd just love to see Cisse playing for us now, not after the summer.

The guys 20 years old, and has been played on the wing at the one club hes played footy at, and yet he can play upfront? Not exactly proven is he!

But as i said, i suppose Wenger has a good track record with converting wingers to strikers.

But the position he takes up in games is often very advanced/central so he plays as more of a second forward drifting in from the left, his goal tally shows this.

Someone mentioned Bergkamp above, doubt he will get more than about 20 games next season, knocking on a bit now.

hmm very good signing this for arsenal and for English Football.

someone mentioned earlier on that the two top teams in the land have two new strike partnerships.

Unfortunatyely Arsenal look to have the better

Remember that a team is made up of 11 players;)

Here's where I reckon Arsene's suprising well padded wallet came from:

-Very low spending last year, only Lehmann, Senderos, Frabregas coming in with people like Upson being sold.
-Jeffers, Van Bronkhorst, Pennant, Volz (later transfered) all out on long term loans to save on wages (got an extra £0.75m for Jeffers too).
-Bergkamp, Kanu & Wiltord all out of contract in the summer, meaning a massive saving on wages (probably approaching £5m/year). I'm guessing Keown might retire at the end of the season too.
-Potentially other players will be leaving in the summer for transfer fees, e.g. Jeffers, Van Bronkhorst, Cygan(?).
-Finance for the stadium supposedly being secured to free up ~£10m to spend in the current window
-Sponsorship contract with Nike signed towards the end of last year.

So all in all thats some pretty reasonable improvements in the cash flow situation. Arsenal were known to be "interested" in Reyes for some time, but since the common perception was that we didn't have that much money to spend there weren't too many ridiclous stories floating about like you see with the likes of Chelsea and MU. Meanwhile Wenger bungs up a few smoke screens while secretly getting the job done. It seems the board listened to him when he explained the problem up front, with Kanu, Wiltord, Jeffers and Aliadiere all missing. Kudos to them for backing him significantly in the market.

Lets be honest, I think most of a prefer the "suprise" transfers like these than the long an protracted sagas like Saha where you have read everything there is do know a month in advance.

Reyes can play in the CL which should take some of the pressure off Henry, and reduce the impact of any potential injury he might suffer. Hope he settles in quickly but it might be unfair to expect massive things from him until next season - we all know the massive transfer fee will mean the media will demand instant results for him not to be branded a flop.

I am surprised that Arsenal didn't try and get someone like VDV for that kind of money, especially with Bergkamp leaving this summer etc, Van Der Vaart would have been an ideal replacement.

I think Van der Vaart will go for even more than we have paid for Reyes  Also with so many top teams after him we wouldn't of got him. Reyes, VdV + Joaquin - all 3 are superb players and in a few years time I wouldn't be suprised if they are recognized as the best 3 in their positions in a few yrs time. So basically you gotta decide which out of those 3 would suit your club the best.

Doest this leave you light up front for cover?
Does this mean a shift to 4-4-2?

Word is its what united are going to go back 4-4-2 and play both Saha and Van Nistelrooy toghether.
Lots of goals all round then.

We got a few kids coming through and Bergkamp might stay on for 1 more year to help the youngsters.

He has played on the wing and upfront for his club. He can play on either wing and upfront!

He is very highly rated, Barca tried to hijack the deal but offered too little for him. He said he didn't want to join another club in Spain and rejected R.Madrid. Inter were also after him I hear. Houllier was praising this kid a few months ago and even said loads of clubs were after him. I think the main reason we got him is our timing, everyone expected us to make a move in the summer. Gonna be a lot of pressure on him though, Wenger didn't release how much he cost on purpose but I think it has leaked out now!

Also this is the 2nd highly rated spanish player we have taken out of la liga within 1 year! Maybe Wenger is going for spanish instead of french now ;) :p Also goes in line with Wenger bring the age of our team down.

[edit]

He won't be able to play against Man City because of a suspension he picked up in spain :(

Quote 'The money offered was out of this world, more than Beckham went for' (Seville President)

Thats likely true.

As for value for money of the 10mn plus players i would go;

1. Cisse (21, top scorer in France)
2. Reyes (25mn total)
3. Saha (6mths of goal scoring only, never broke 10 goals a yr, 25)
4. Ronaldo

However, i will admit that Reyes is the best transfer due to his flexibility, age and potential to be world class. He will give Arsenal cover for Pires, Berkamp, Ljungberg and Henry in one player.

Hopefully VDV will now go to Liverpool in another 'swoop' no notice deal, his girlfriend told the dutch press they had bought a house in Liverpool *crosses fingers*.

He has only cost €15m with the rest on apps here:

The initial consideration is €15 million (£10.5m), of which €10 million is payable (75 apps) immediately. 6.9 m Additional consideration of up to €9.5 million may become payable, subject to various appearance and performance criteria being satisfied. Arsenal does not expect any of the above sums, other than the initial €10 million fee, to become payable in its current financial year.

I still can't help thinking that another proven forward should have been a higher priority.

I presume Arsene will be trying him upfront, but it's a bit of a gamble.

Problem is not many proven strikers around available now and eligible for the cups we wanna play in. Only cheap player available is Kluivert but tbh I don't think we should get him due to his high wage demands. For many years he hasn't given a damn about playing like he should so he might be happy collecting his large wages doing nothing.

Reyes is really good, he can play so many positions and is young. A few of our best players have come here with a rep of being good but not quite living upto it, Reyes will do fine. He is so good at a young age, wait until he settles in, hopefully will see the best of him then :)

Cheers for the info Gooner14. So that means he has cost us around £10.5mill + £6.5mill on appearences and success. Good deal if you ask me.

Our chairman has come out and said Henry is not going to R.Madrid as well :)

TBH I doubt it, so many big clubs will be offering a lot for him. I see him going for over £25mill. So many conflicting stories about him. His girlfriend says he is buying a house, VdV himself says he wants to go to Barca. Chelsea ready to offer big bucks for him and so are R.Madrid.

Check out this article  R.Madrid fans and players were left in shock after the way Reyes played, seems like he thrives on the big occation. Lets hope he will do the same for us.

Also found this

Outgoing fees: £102.4m
Incoming fees: £84.5m
Net outlay: £17.9m

No manager over 7 years could match that and bring in the success Arsene has, that is why no matter who he buys we have faith in him. He has made some bad buys but he has made super buys as well.

We never usually release figures but so many were flying around yesterday I think they chose to let the actual amount out.

Reyes is definitely worth the nine million up front or so. There is no clearer young talent in Spain, except maybe Vicente. This lad is really something.

I have watched Reyes mesmerise opposition defenders and this can only mean the dawn of a new era for Arsenal FC. I can see him fitting right into the team as his playing style is very much the flowing, beautiful game Arsenal play.

Arsenal are already close to unstoppable as it is and I cannot bear to imagine what will happen to ManYoo when they meet next time around. I hate to admit it but Arsène Wenger is the shrewdest manager in the English game (forget Gilberto Silva and Wiltord. We have done worse with Kleberson and Forlan).

Saha for 12.825 million in a depressed market? Sir Alex should really be thinking about retirement. I am starting to believe rumours that he is held at gunpoint whenever a deal is being tabled.

This transfer really pains me as a ManYoo fan as all our transfers put together can never hope to rival this. Whenever I see Darren Fletcher, Kleberson and David Bellion starting for United, I am filled with despair and forgive me for comparing them with Arsenal's midfield.

Sir Alex may have visions about a new batch of fledglings whenever he pleases but when Scholes, Giggs and Keane are gone, he will wish he hadn't planned so far ahead. All the best to Reyes!

...I'm pretty astounded by Arsenal's signing of Reyes. Where have they got the money from?! I'm astounded, but also, as a United fan, more than a little worried.

I saw the 4-1 game against Real Madrid and it is no exaggeration to say that he absolutely destroyed them, he even had the job done and dusted before half-time. The Real defenders didn't have a clue how to stop him, one poor sod got taken off after about 25 minutes and was in tears! Actually crying! I have never seen anything like it.

He's being described as a left-sided player but I could see Wenger moving him into the middle a la Henry. Them two together up front? Bloody hell.

Is he worth it? If Louis Sahahaha is worth £13million then this kid is a bargain.

Jamie Stewart, a worried (and slightly annoyed we haven't got him) United fan
P.S. He was actually crying!

ROFL :D

Ruben was the defender who was crying, don't think he has played since, not really fair to blame just him though as the whole team were appalling.

Very good game, it was like a bunch of amateurs playing, Sevilla were tearing them apart all over the pitch and walking through the defence with Reyes the most effective.

Best thing about this transfer is it shows a really top player wanted to come to England over anywhere else, a lot of the big signings like Henry, Bergkamp, Kanu, Makelele have come here because things weren't going well at their club whereas Reyes is someone who everyone wanted but chose England.
