Ashes thread - England vs Australia * SPOILERS *

sad day for english cricket!

I reckon Fletch will go after this - too many awful decisions

We miss:
Tresco
S. Jones
Vaughan

We need rid of:
Giles -> Panesar (obvious to anyone)
GoJo -> Chris Read is better keeper (and plays more decent shots than GoJo so far in ashes)
Anderson -> Mahmood (another batting option for DF)

Playing two men out of 11 who havent played in a year is just stupidity.

Im preparing my CV to apply for the job when Fletcher goes. I have ones years experience as a cricket fan. You think that would help?!

been a bad day but i will cheer up!

Jonny

Amazing comeback by the Aussies, people wanna knock the English batsman but their bowling was fantastic. Lee was well pumped and bowling some nasty deliveries and Warne looked like he was spinning it ninety degrees! Shouldn't of lost though but credit where credit is due.

The simple fact of the matter is that if England had a fully fit side, I'd back us to win the Ashes

I wouldn't tbh and not because I am allegedly an England hater ;) A bowling attack of McGrath, Clarke, Lee and Warne is as good any in the world and their batting is imo better than England's. In the last Ashes series England would not have won the series if McGrath hadn't got injured imo

Virtually the same team as i suggested after the first test. Panesar has to play. Anderson has looked ineffective and shouldn't have played as he isn't fully match fit and in form. Mahmood can do the bat at 8 job.

The thing that really annoys me about the Giles selection is that having missed a whole year through injury he wasn't played in one of the warm up games. That is surely madness if they we're gonna play him.

David Lloyd seems to make a point of saying Flintoff has a big say in team selection and that he prefers Giles and Jones. If thats true then his position as captain should be considered too, he has to pick our best players not people who he prefers or has a good feeling about at the expense of those players.

Jones has had so many chances and again not produced with the bat, Reid should never have been dropped as I thought he did OK with the bat in the test series against Pakistan. Certainly no worse than Jones. Just hope his confidence isn't blown.

Right from day 1 when we selected a defensive team we've been battered. We won it last time with aggression and believing in ourselves and this seems to have been forgotten. Scoring 18 runs off 20 overs this morning (some of them being no balls) is a disgrace. The first innings showed that when u take on Warne and McGrath and they aren't getting great help from the pitch they start to look their age. 1 wicket between them and that was right at the end.

The management and the team need to find some balls and firstly pick the right team and then go at them before we get battered in the remaining tests.

Defo missing Jones, no one else can reverse swing the ball like he can. If Fletcher picks this side for the 3rd test, this will be a whitewash. How Jimmy Anderson keeps getting picked I'll never know.

That's what I was thinking. Jones was amazing in the last Ashes series. flintoff was good, but he was player of the series. Te swing and bounce he got was amazing.

Ahhh here we go yet again, this time Fletcher saying the batsmen failed them...WTF??...yes sure blame the batsmen but dont blame the bowlers who couldnt even bowl the Aussies out.

Seriously Fletcher needs a good kicking up the arse, the stupid old stubborn git hasnt a clue and should be sacked asap...hes outstayed his welcome i think and England would do well to get another coach in...someone who doesnt favour certain players;).

Read that before and one paragraph stood out for me.

"Andrew and I have the final say," he confirmed, adding that the mysterious selection committee didn't include David Graveney or any of the home selectors, but instead consisted of a panel of senior players - Andrew Strauss, Paul Collingwood and Jones - who are consulted prior to each Test. Given that Jones, who does not currently have a central contract, is one of the most contentious choices on this tour already, it is a further sign that Shane Warne was spot on in his pre-series assessment, when he claimed that Fletcher has his "favourites".

How on earth can Jones be allowed a say in team selection when he shouldn't even be selected himself.

Looks like Warne was right when he said Fletcher had his favourites. It is a damn shame even when in a professional environment people were being picked for being better mates rather than ability. I feel for Read and especially Panesar. Read still had a lot to prove but Panesar imo earned the right to play, this defensive mindset England has will cost them. The last Ashes England were attacking from all corners but right now they look too defensive with their batsman at No.8 rubbish.

Damien Martyn has just announced his retirement from international cricket

He was a great player and a shame to see him go but I think he realised his form had deserted him and that he would be dropped sooner or later due to that so to save that embarrassment of being dropped again. Thought him being dropped in the last Ashes was out of order as he had come off a great year but age was not on his side. His performances against Sri Lanka and India when the Aussies won the away series were truly remarkable and he was the main reason they finally were able to win on Indian soil.

Tbh i think he made the right call, hes getting kinda old now and hasnt found the form that made him a top player a few yrs ago. Especially in this Ashes series, its been pretty disappointing to say the least. Good player but at least hes made the right decision and is allowing someone else to come in and prove themselves.

Saying that Watson is out again, seems like he cant shake his hamstring injury off..would have been interesting to see him play as hes a pretty good all-rounder. Other than that looks Symmonds is back into the squad, devastating batter and not too bad at bowling as well...reminds me of Afridi in the way he plays. Also some unknown by the name of Vogues is in the squad...cant say ive ever heard of him but good to see Australia taking some chances now to give the up and coming players a chance to prove themselves. England would be wise to follow the Aussies example tbqh.

Mccrath and Warne are in the top 3 all time bowlers, i doubt they will be playing in the next ashes. Would the Aussies have been the force the have been for the last 10 years without them? Worringly for Australia Lee is probally their next best bowler he aint bad but he's not in the same league as the other 2

Well Fletcher has finally given in and picked a proper team. One I wanted right from the start. Mahmood in for Anderson and Panesar in for Giles.

Only problem is that now they might have to much pressure on them and it might be too late, if only they had of been played from the start.

Jones keeps his place, hardly surprising considering he's part of the selection committee

finally they make a decent selection... only other thing i would have wanted is to see chris read in for geraint jones.

Monty will be under pressure though considering all the hype.

I still think its too late to win the ashes back cause 2 wins and a draw is a lot to ask from any side especially under pressure.

Come on lads!

Definitely too late. The pressure on the new lads will be a lot, maybe too much. If England had gone into the series with a statement of intent with that team rather than having a bowling attack where only one of them was match fit we might have stood a chance. The management need to stand up and take the blame for the pathetic performances we've seen so far.

1. Shocking team selection picking coach favorites rather than our in form and most importantly match fit players.

2. Inadequate preparation for such an important series.

3. Letting coaches like Cooley go.

4. Going out with such a defensive attitude like 5 draws was good enough. A pathetic attitude which got what it deserved on day 5 of the last test.

All I want to see is them give England everything they've got as if their lives depended upon it. At least then we can say we went out there with the most attacking line up we've got and gave it everything we had, win lose or draw. The first two tests have been utterly shameful.

yeah im with you on all that... iv only followed cricket for about a year but even I know that you dont play too players that have been out for a year.

Its been a series to forget so far. I was gutted after they lost the last test because of how collingwoods, pietersens and hoggys good work was undone!

Will never forget his 200 though. What a great moment for the guy!

Agreed and that just showed that the Aussies aren't as great as they'd like to think. Without assistance from the pitch McGrath is not anywhere near as good as he was. Pietersen walking down the pitch and smacking him through cover as though he's a rookie was a great sight. Warne also virtually gave up and Lee has problems at times too.Their batting was starting to fall apart in their first innings and if Giles had taken that catch they would have been in serious trouble. They got some luck and then performed well which is fair enough.

What annoys me though is that they came out on the last day with fight and effort, we didn't come close and just tried to play the overs out which was pathetic. If the roles had of been reversed there's noway the aussies would have done what we did.

yeah its was awful.. i went to bed that night expecting all to be well.. woke about 5.30 to find that score was awful.. couldnt sleep rest of the night. Had a real headache all day too! Iv never seen anything like it. i would say that your right about giles dropped catch starting the downfall.. its ok sayin that on hindsight though.

Are you guys staying up late tonite? I dont have sky sports unfortunately so gotta have a look around the forums!
