Ashes thread - England vs Australia * SPOILERS *

hes had a bit of competition to get into the side.

damn giles, he was crucial to our plans of a claen sweep. fletcher just caught on too damn fast, he and flintoff are just too damn sharp for us ;)

the word on the street is that freddie picks the side also. i imagine if you lose this one and monty gets another 5 in the second what kind of position fletcher and graveny will be in.

Wow what a performance by Monty eh??, should have been playing straight from the off as ive said time and time again but you English couldnt get that through your thick skulls. The lad takes wickets and he took plenty today, well done to Monty...lets hope the English pick this fella again...if they dont then they all need shooting tbh. Harmison finally decides to bowl properly again...:p..good bowling by the lad

Anyways good bowling by the English, really took it to the Aussies...guess they havent got much of a choice as losing this game means BALL GAME over for them. Still i think the Poms will get beaten by the Aussies or it will end up being a draw...but i think it will be another amazing Aussie win imho.

Wasnt that impressed with the Aussie batting although Hussey is beginning to become a thorn in your backsides...the guy is the complete number 4...excellent batter with some pretty good figures behind him already. IF it wasnt for his 74, the Aussies would be in a dire position...losing Ponting very cheaply was a big wicket for the Poms.

Anyways good performance by the English for a change, but seeing as Warne hasnt bowled much...it will be definitely interesting to see what happens tommorrow...i can see him getting 5 or more wickets if the pitch is turning and that is very very bad news for the English....England is gonna need all the luck they can get at the moment...

LOL @ Symmonds hitting poor Monty for 2 massive 6's...sadly he aint much of a test batsman...more suited to the ODI's imho. But still not a bad start to his innings...although shortlived though:p.

Err which English are you talking about? As far as I can tell most of England has wanted Monty in from the start....

Quote from cricinfo was quite amusing yet annoying at the same time:

Sour face of the day
The moment Monty Panesar took his fifth wicket, the cameras, inevitably, sought out Duncan Fletcher in the England dressing-room. It was a picture of inscrutable misery.

:D

It's funny that what the public has known all along has been ignored by the expert selectors  I feel sorry for Monty for missing the two tests, but his performance on a new pitch is amazing. If England can win this test and somehow come back in the series, Fletcher should be sacked and Monty knighted. (well an mbe or something)

A lot of the credit should go to Freddie, he kept Monty on after he got smashed for 17 in 1 over. Had a quiet word in his ear and then he got his man a couple of overs later.
Harmy bowled well in spells, pace was up and accuracy seemed to be getting better.
Would like to see the yorker used a little more, the way that Ponting, Langer and Hussey sometimes get across their stumps gives us a chance when the ball is right at their toes. :)
Felt sorry for Bell, good ball got him out. Cook hasn't shown a great deal of form in the tests. We need someone to make a big hundred and to bat for the whole of tomorrow, then if we can got a lead of a hundred or so get fired into them.

Wish I hadn't gone to bed now. Great stuff from Monty and Harmy. Look like a team that can take 20 wickets now. Great achievement to bowl them out for 244, Flintoff didn't even get a wicket!

Shame about the two wickets lost. We have to see out the new ball for the first hour tomorrow and need a century and two 50's from our batsmen to put us in a great position.

Would love to see an interview with Fletcher after that performance.

Its so blindlingly obvious to everyone who knows even the slightest thing about cricket, that Giles should not have been playing. What logic could there possibly be for selecting him? They made the mistake of choosing him once but why again for the second test, especially seeing as you have an upcoming capable spin bowler there??? Too much damage has been done already and Fletcher and the selectors have basically cost England the ashes here. Good on Monty for making such an huge impression on his ashes debut though, well done lad :)

I think Giles was playing because he can also bat a little down the order. I think this was a mistake at it sends out the message to your opponents that you are not confident with your main batsmen and need someone down the order to get you more runs. Monty should have been playing from the start

True he can bat a little, key word little. He's never gonna score a century and win a game though. He should have been there purely for his bowling, and that he can't do very well so he should never have been selected. Your right it sends out totally the wrong message when you start relying on your bowlers to get you sum runs.

Either way though it still seems illogical. Giles makes 20 odd runs at the end ok but then Australia go on and make 600 because England can't get them all out. Or they select a bowler who makes 0 runs but at least gives you the chance of getting Australia out for half that total. Its true though as someone up there pointed out, everyone else could see it, I have no idea what Fletcher was thinking. I'm not even an england supporter but it was so obvious and frustrating for me, to see Giles getting selected again and again. its basically handing the ashes over to Australia.

i stayed up all last nite and glad i did.. was amazing! still havent been to bed since tuesday night so im due a good sleep tonite! Uni over now for the semester so i think im gonna do the sleep all day and up all night stunt.

Enjoy tonites action!

And we're off for the days play. Time to see off that new ball.

Collingwood doesn't manage it. Trying to flash it square or through gully, instead goes straight to Hayden fielding there.

55/3 :(
