Ashes thread - England vs Australia * SPOILERS *

Because you need to give them a total to "chase", if they got 900 all out. The Aussies would just stone wall everything .

watched it till 2am this morning then went to bed. Just waiting for midday to watch the highlights on sky sports.

Like has already been said though I can see a draw on the cards :o

*confused* but if they did stone wall everything, we'd have more runs at the end and thus win; or does it force a draw by some means I'm not understanding?

Ok Deep breath :p Its called a TEST match, which implies it is a test of skill, talent and tactics. Both teams need to bat 2 innings within 5 days of a normal test match.

The only exception to this if a team wins buy a inning. Which for example could happen if we skittle out the aussies for say 150 (heres hoping :D ) then we could force them to follow on , which means they have to bat again.

hope this helps to clear things up a little

in a test match it doesn't matter who has scored more runs UNLESS the other team has taken all 20 wickets to dismiss you twice

this will no doubt be a draw..... mcgrath should have been rested and mcgill should have been in the team

the pitch is lifeless for the seamers and just too much hard work, the poms could have used monty in the team... giles is in there for his batting mainly, a pretty defensive move..........

Fantastic achievement by Collingwood and Piertersen. Both have proved yet again what accomplished batsman they are unlike our openers. I predicted England would declare around the 550 mark and I wasn't wrong but hopefully I'll be wrong about taking two days to bowl Australia out. It's quite obvious their bowlers struggled, especially McGrath and Warne, so I hope ours don't have a repeat performance of the first test. They should be full of confidence and the early wicket will only help to egg them on. Overall, I'm in quite a positive mood about our chances once again :D

great to see england playing really well with bat again, but as said above i never understood and still dont understand why monty is not playing. giles can bat a bit i'll admit that but i cant see him ripping through this aussie lineup bowling outside leg stump.

Great day for England, good to see us get a wicket before close too. Here's hoping we can get them out tommorrow for under 400 and set them a challenging target to chase. Still has draw written all over it though.

COLLY YOU LEGEND!

what can i say... im absolutely delighted for colly.. after so nearly missing out on a place he comes in and scored over 300 runs in 2 matches.... an absolute legend.. the highlights on the bbc website are very good.

As for KP he is just outstanding.. makes it look easy!

Lets hope harmy can produce some magic to clean the aussies up!

The Aussies do have 4 left handers, could be slightly harder for them.

n00b question.

Why declare? Why not just keep going until you're all out? Surely you wan't to make it as hard for your oponents as possible?

Well done to Collingwood though. Thats got to be a career highlight for him, getting 200 runs against Australia :D

Basically, England staying at the crease wouldn't really achieve much. Declaring gives you an opportunity to get a few overs in against batsmen that have been in the field all day in the hope of picking up a cheap wicket. In this case it worked perfectly.

The ball has suddenly decided to swing and England have the Aussies 65/3! Harmisson looking a lot better as well and is working up some serious pace.

Martyn gone now as well! Edged to gully i think it was.

It's good entertainment and inspiring me to finish this composite materials assignment :)

Oh and listening to Test Match Special, i don't think anyone can talk about cricket as well as Geoffrey Boycott. He knows exactly what needs to be done and in my opinion should be more involved with the England set up.

Come on England!!

Hopefully he won't regret that but bad things can happen when you drop the most inform batsman in world cricket....
