Asrock Z68 Extreme 7

Looking for some help.

I was ready to get AMD's new bulldozer until the ********* of reviews came out so now I'm back to looking at Intel.

I believe I've narrowed it down to Asrock but I'm unsure whether to get the Extreme4 or Extreme7, seems most people are recommending the Extreme4 so I'm not really sure what to go for, help!

Hi guys,

I'm just trying to catch up on all the advancements of the last couple of years (been away and out of the loop). Just wonder if you can offer a bit of advice?

I'm looking to build a new system now and was just wondering if it is worth opting for one of these motherboards in the hope of future-proofing, say over the Asus P8Z68-V currently on offer?

I presume the new ivybridge procs would require a new chipset to get the most out of them, thus negating the benefit of the PCI-E 3 ports in these? Will they likely even run at full speed?

Cheers,

Adam

ah gotcha wanted to be sure of that point its a new mobo and i5 cpu and memory upgrading from a q6600 cpu hope there be a bit faster lol keeping same ssd with windows 7 on it looks like i will have to reinstall then ?? .

You could probably get away with not reinstalling but if changing motherboard it's recommended that you do a fresh OS installation.

Evening all,

Just finishing off my pre-install prep on the Extreme 7... Do I really need to install all the Asrock stuff? Any one recommend certain programs, before I just bin them off?

:)

Yeah I'd definately suggest a fresh install. Remember to download the latest software and drivers off the Intel and Asrock websites, don't use the included disc tbh.

So very long since I did my last reinstall. I don't suppose anyone could recommend specifically which software and drivers are key to getting this board setup please? Going to be installing W7x64 on it with a 2600k.

Pretty much downloaded everything off the ASRock site and also got the update checker thing off the Intel site. If I don't plan to use Intel Rapid storage and the onboard audio, do I need to install drivers?

ok so I've finally started putting my build together, been meaning to for ages but had to make up mind on parts(ram etc) then had to put it off for 3 weeks due to personal reasons and been lazy for the past couple of weks :)

any way trying to screw the crucial m4 ssd on the usb front panel with 2.5" disk rack(as the asrock website calls it on he product page), the ssd slides about(so when I come to put the power connector from the psu and the sata cable going to have a problem. don't want to risk damaging it by over tightening it).

then I need to figure out how to connect the radiator of the ocuk h2flo to the rear fan on my cosmos s case. after that it should be pretty straight forwards till I get to the drivers installation.

edit: ok so think I've got the ssd secure tho hope I didn't tighten it too much to damage it, food now then going to play around trying to fit the fan/s on the h2flo.

is anyone still reading this?

well I got h2flo fitted and the pump/waterblock seems to be secure and not wobbly, I did give the thumb screws a few turns with a flathead screw driver as I wasn't sure if I'd twisted them enough especially one of them which had heatsink to the side and below it so difficult getting my fings in there.

got the i2500k system built up in the cm cosmos s case(well almost complete not got the 2nd 6950 toxic, 2nd pair of ram or the hard disk the os is going on the 128gb crucial m4 ssd. also not fitted the 3 roof extracting fans, currently only have front intake and 2 fans on the radiator as intake). need to install windows and the drivers now, once its all ready I'll test it then add the missing few bits mentioned.

whats the order to install the drivers?

the inf, network(broadcom?), lucid virtua, soundcard(creative titanium fatal1ty pro), graphics card(ati/amd catalyst), do I need the intel rapid storage drivers?

which of the other software on cd is worth installing(even getting the latest version off the asrock site)?

guess no one is bothered.

appears my board maybe deffective, getting the error code 45 when I have ram in slot 3 or 4(1&2 are fine but means no double channel for me). don't know if I'm seeing things but when I put the ram in slot 3 or 4 it doesn't fully sit flush while the other 2 slots do.
