Assistance - Calling all Samsung EVO owners

This is why I don't RAID SSD^

Take an image of it, remove a single drive, see if you can add this as a second drive on another PC and run the software from there..

when connecting as a second drive it has to be using a sata cable and power cable. the external USB cable that came with the upgrade kits doesn't allow you to do the firmware updates through the software.

is there a USB version of the firmware you can stick on a USB stick and boot from it at all to do it that way?

this was 1 of the reasons why I didn't use raid as well.

from their website

Samsung SSD Firmware Updates for Windows Users

Below you will find the latest firmware downloads for recent Samsung-branded SSDs.
Zipped files must be used with Samsung Magician Software.
ISO files may be used only via DOS using a bootable CD/DVD.

the firmware downloads are here but the release dates doesn't match the new one

So you can't download the new magician update via the 4.5 installation? And then when you do you can't get to download the firmware due to Samsung's daily download limit being reached? Can this company get anymore laughable?

I tried from my PC last night and checked for updates through the magician software but then told me I was on the latest version (4.5) went directly to the website and can see 4.6 on there

I've just uninstalled 4.6 and installed Magician 4.2. When run for the first time it automatically updated to v4.5. V4.5 doesn't seem to be reporting the update to v4.6, but it can now be downloaded from Samsung's site.

would be the best option but they don't seem to think that everyone needs 4.6 as im on 4.5 and it says its up to date

I don't know why they don't do an automatic update. I suppose those that don't have the performance loss issue don't need 4.6, and the new firmware. And those that know they have performance loss will probably be a little more "techy" and be able to download 4.6 from the Samsung.

Still, it seems a bit odd that they don't yet want to allow an automatic update. Maybe it's just to limit the initial load on the servers, but I wouldn't have thought that would be an issue anyway.

I'm checking a customer's 840 EVO again tomorrow, and carrying out the update for her. Interestingly, the last time I checked a couple of months ago her EVO didn't show any signs of slowdown, despite it being several months after the previous "fix" was installed.

maybe the previous fix sorted the drive out as it did sort some of the drives but not all of them.

Installed 4.6 manually and updated the firmware. Nowhere near original performance just yet, but I imagine it'll get there eventually throughout today.

Still going to be offloading this drive asap though. Do not like how Samsung have handled this personally.

I came to that conclusion a couple of months ago. Although I'll be more certain when I test it tomorrow.

I don't think it fixes any drives - some seem to take longer to show subsequent degradation than others - mine was fine for weeks after the update but slowly starting to show signs of degradation again now.

Although Samsung didn't provide an immediate fix, and their first effort didn't work in all cases, they did acknowledge the issue and worked on a solution. It's yet to be seen if the latest update does permanently solve the problem, but I'm hopeful that it will.

I think that "offloading" the drive is probably not really required at this stage, unless it is purely a matter of principle. If all 840 EVOs now perform as stated without any need for further updates or user intervention, I don't see any reason to change to another SSD.

If this fix still leaves some 840 EVOs with slowdown issues, I'd hope that Samsung would sort out replacements.

I will say that Samsung haven't done themselves any favours though.

I realise that it takes a few weeks for the slowdown to show up. My EVO took about 5 weeks before it started to slow, then a few more weeks to really slow down.

I tested my customer's EVO nearly 3 months after the first update, and the results were pretty well perfect. The graph in HDTune was a fairly straight line, with speeds not dropping below 500MB/s.

I'm testing it again tomorrow. It'll be interesting to see if there has been any slow down in performance, about 6 months after the first "fix".

Tbh I need a bigger drive too. 120gb is nowhere enough.
