ASUS 42" ROG Swift PG42UQ

My replacement RMA screen arrived this morning. DPD driver unloaded it on its side from the van. The plastic holders on the box two were broken, the top seal was unsealed and clearly resealed. The box handles were torn…..

And the screen was smashed.

So sorry to hear this :(

I hope third time is the charm and you get to enjoy the display very soon!

I can’t help but think the universe is trying to tell you something there!

Sorry to hear though, hopefully the next one is fine!

Does sound like you got a return sent out and the person that checked it and repackaged it didn’t do it correctly before it was sent back out, if it had already been opened? Was the plastic film still on the front?

The protective foam was still on the front and all the stickers untouched.

My PG48UQ was delivered to Ireland in perfect condition two weeks ago, loving it so far.

I wasn't sure if the size would work for me, but having it further away than my old 27" certainly seems easier on the eyes when staring at work all day.

Viewing angles are amazing, no colour/brightness shift at all in the corners even if you're close.

The coating is the perfect balance between matte and glossy finish IMO - great in bright light for office work and in darkness for movies/games.

I'm taking some burn-in mitigation:
* Screensaver - black screen after 2 mins, suspend after 5.
* Screen protection > "screen move" (pixel shifting) on "strong", I don't notice it unless I look really closely at menu bars at the top/bottom of the screen. Never seen it move while it's on, so I guess it picks a random position when it comes out of power-saving, or detects a black screen/no signal. I'd guess it moves about 6 pixels in all directions.
* Dark/black desktop backgrounds
* Auto-hide desktop toolbars (Linux window-managers seem much better than Windows in this regard, as you can customise the delay/sensitivity/transparency better).

Only annoying thing is that it only has one DisplayPort: I want to have my laptop and desktop both connected at the same time, and the laptop can only output 60Hz at 1080p over HDMI but can do 60Hz at 4k over DisplayPort, and the desktop (2080Ti) can only do 60Hz at 4k over HDMI (2.0b) but can do 120Hz+ at 4k over DisplayPort. So I've compromised at native resolution at 60Hz on both devices, and manually change the desktop to DisplayPort when I want to game :mad: Time to get a 4090 I guess :cry:

I'll update again when I start seeing burn-in :p

Like one review said "all other monitors are trash to me now" :cool:

Ok i feel like this is a simple answer but my brain just isn't having any of it.

I see the top of the monitor has what appears to be a 1/4 inch female socket for webcams etc. I want to put my elgato face cam up there which also has a 1/4 inch female socket. For the life of me i can't seem to find a short adapter with a few cm for clearance to make it happen.

Anyone help out? lol

If you get a male to male 1/4 adapter, you could use Elgato's cold shoe to mount the camera up there and give yourself some tilt flex.

Depending on how much room you need, if you search "NEEWER Cool Ballhead" on Amazon that'd work too. Might end up putting the camera slightly off to one side to keep it low enough, but should work ok too.

@Baddass
Planning on getting a 4090 and just wondering what you’d recommend, HDMI 2.1 or stick with DP?
Does the HDMI 2.1 offer anything extra since it doesn’t use compression?
Thanks!

Yeah but with DSC on DP does it matter?

What are the pros and cons of both connections?

Looking at this section of the review it seems colour depth is the only difference but doesn’t get into the details of comparing 10v12bit?

HDMI 2.1 will allow 12-bit colour depth processing but with the panel being native 10-bit anyway and with actual high bit depth content being rare, I don’t think you’d see any visual difference at all. It would also support res/refresh rate without needing DSC, but again you won’t see any visual difference at all.

Doesn’t matter which you use tbh. As long as you don’t need the ports for anything else

Really want this monitor but can't sole some problems.

I have a work MacBook and want to connect to this, be able to do power delivery and connect to the USB hub for plugging a camera in the top. Unfortunately, I can't seem to find a TB4 dock that can support 4k120hz for the MacBook with power delivery.. I'd also then need a USB 3 switch..

HDMI allows me to alt-tab from fullscreen games seamlessly as if they are in window-borderless mode. Whereas DP causes a second or two delay like its shifting refresh rates (although its not). Just my 2 cents. Also don’t know why that would be the case.
