Asus UL30A

anyone know how quick it can be from official release date being announce to it being released? i'd like the asus ul30jt as a lot say it's much better then the ul30a. trouble i got is there is no official release date, with everyone saying april. well april is just 1 week from finishing so is it likely to get announced say tomorrow, then release friday? or am i looking at officially confirmed date announced tomorrow, and then wait 1 month until release?

the UL30JC is available to pre-order in the US. What I've heard is mid-May for the European versions.

I'm looking forward to the PL30JT personally, or the 14'' version (with dvd drive).

mid-may? that sucks as i don't really want to wait, but i know i'll regret not waiting as if i buy one now it'd be out of date in less then a month. i'd like the pl version too though fear the increase in price will be a little too much.

why on earth all screens aren't matt is beyond me. shiny screens look terrible! who actually likes them?

any alternatives that are similar idea? 13" with decent looks and decent power inside?

Yeah, the Sony Vaio Z series :) It's like £1500!

Putting glossy screens on ultra-portable is really retarded. But what can you do.

As for waiting, I know it's hard (been waiting for 6 months for the VT series to make it across the atlantic), but if you don't need it like right now, there's absolutely no point going for impulse purchase.

And to be honest, I wouldn't mind a Vaio myself, I can't justify paying twice the price for roughly the same thing (poorer battery life, more powerful and sleek, but apart from that...). If it doesn't come out before my summer holiday, Vaio it will be.

Can you guys check something for me please. I have just replaced my UL30a due to a tingling sensation when the charger is connected and switched on [laptop can be on or off] and brush the metal lid with your fingertips. It's as id the metal top is not earthed properly.
My replacement does the same thing too :(
Is this a major issue? Do you all have this issue?
Thanks

I've just bought one of these and I noticed the same thing.

It's worrying that the lid conducts any electricity.

Same thing for everyone else?

I asked Asus support and they said they will get back to me. Anyone else with the problem should do the same.

Had mine for a few weeks.
Very good little machine.
Screen isn't too hot with really really really bad viewing angles.
Plus i hate textured touchpads. And teh touchpad button themselves are stiff and very unpleasant to use.

Small gripes for an excellent spec machine at a great price. And teh battery life is just fantastic.

Strange, I find the screen viewing angle better than most.
Touch pad is as bad as most.
I have always prefered the cusor key thing.
As to the electrical sensation through the lid, yes there is something there, but had the same thing on the previous 2 aluminium laptops I have had, feels like a small vibration???
TBH the only gripe for me is the small amount of flex in the keyboard, but that just seems to be the norm these days with a lot of notebooks.

Yeah that's the one. I suppose as long as it's safe I don't mind ignoring it. I've emailed Asus like twe said and I'll see what they say.

Found the same with the LCD - anyone else looking at your screen has to get pretty close for a good view.

Also dislike the textured touchpad - just feels harder to use than it need be. Although I'm pretty used to it now. The touchpad buttons however... might take a bit longer to get used to!

ASUS U30JC-A1 13.3-Inch Laptop

Been reading up on a decent ultraportable that would allow me to play Diablo 3 (and a few old favourites), while still being able to bring it to lectures, work, and travel.

Found this on Amazon: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0036ZEANO

The ASUS U30JC-A1:

* Intel Core i3-350M Processor (2.26 GHz)
* NVIDIA® GeForce® 310M Graphics Engine with 512MB DDR3 Dedicated VRAM with NVIDIA® Optimus™ technology
* 4GB of DDR3 1066MHz DRAM (2GB x 2 slots), 4GB Max; Wireless 802.11 b/g/n
* 320GB Hard Drive (5400 RPM); Super Multi Optical Disk Drive; Windows 7 Home Premium (64 bit) Operating System
* 13.3-Inch HD (1366x768) LED Display; 0.3MP Webcam; HDMI Port; 8 cell 5600mAh battery

Seems too good to be true. I'm not too concerned about overclocking potential, though that would be a nice bonus. Anyone know when the UK release is likely to be?

At the very least, it has the independent graphics, battery life, weight, size and basic specs that suit me very well. But I'm curious to see what reviews might be out there, since I've found none so far (although I've only started looking this week). Can anyone shed some light?

Many thanks.

Edit: For the record, I don't own a P3 anymore. I just think it's a snappy sig. :D

Got mine home last night and played around with it.

I've come to the conclusion it's the perfect laptop for anyone who likes the idea of a netbook, but finds them too slow and the res to small. I have been waiting for this laptop (at this price) for so long. Great budget laptop that isn't massive and isn't a netbook. Well done Asus!

That's the UL30Jt little brother, with a added DVD player, and weaker CPU. The UL30JT should be arriving next month in Europe, which is an upgrade of the UL30VT, which itself is an upgrade of the UL30A. Then there is also the PL30JT, the businessman's UL30JT with a matte screen, some anti-theft stuff, different track pad, and longer warranty.

I wouldn't worry about overclocking. It should have Asus Turbo Boost (whatever that is), and scales CPU power automatically with the load. So it should be pretty quick.

I'd wait for a bit personally. The Asus ULVT / ULJC line is basically a macbook / Vaio-Z clone on the cheap, but in a few weeks, they should be available. The '80' series is the most interesting imo. It's 14'', slightly bigger than the 13'', with a added dvd drive. Dunno if they'll make a PL80JC, but I have external USB DVD player in case not :)

Should I buy the Asus UL30A?

Had a Sammy NC10 for a year now, but I'm looking for something with more power but still portable, would this laptop do the job?
