ATI Catalyst™ version 10.7

What exactly is the problem with having slightly higher idle clock speeds? Mine runs at 47c idle and I hardly think this is going to damage it. Especially considering it's only if you are overclocking your card. If you are so paranoid about wearing it out or increased power bills why are you overclocking it in the first place?

I do not know about 10.7 with OC cards but my non-ock ran fine with 10.6. I downloaded 10.7 to see of there was any difference and my FFXIV benchmark went up by 200-300 points.

Second time I ran it after a few seconds i had a black screen and a horrid noise from my speakers followed by a restart :9

When card isn't overclocked, idle clocks are 157/300. Overclocking gets it as high as 400/constant memory clock. It is a problem because of the exactly two reasons you stated. There's also temps and noise issue. A funny thing is that if you watch a FullHD flash video, you will experience standard 400/900 clocks for this purpose. When you stop, memory will go back to say 1200 :) This is obviously not working as intended and should be fixed or allow a manual workaround.

The point is that there's no need to ? you can overclock on cat 10.4 and it still idles at 157/300 so why remove that feature ? there's really no reason I can think of to do that ?

Okay, I don't understand this.

In the past three years, i've had ONE problem with ATI drivers, which was easily solved by reinstalling them. Yet every month, we get a thread full of people complaining.

Now I accept that those of you running Crossfire are going to get more problems, it's pretty much par for the course.

But I don't get people who have a single HD5850 or 70 and whinge that their "games are broken". My question to those of you who have posted statements like that is:

Are you uninstalling the old drivers properly???

ATI and nVidia both state that you should install new drivers over the old ones.

I do this and I haven't had any problems that weren't down to user error.

I still use driver sweeper i uninstall old drivers delete the ati folder then clean with driver sweeper reboot then clean again and reboot then install new driver never had a single problem on 4850 or 5770

What's up with sc2??

Graphics driver crashes about once every 20 mins. Windows 7 is nice and recovers it for you after about 5 seconds, so it's not the end of the world, but it's pretty annoying.

I had a similar thing with my old machine in Eve online, and it turned out to be the onboard sound causing the nv4disp to bsod. My solution was to get a Xfi.

I've always read that you should uninstall old drivers first to avoid conflicts.

ATI site states:

1.Upgrade an old driver to the latest version from AMD.COM

a.Note! Before getting started, ensure that you know the model of your graphics card. It will come in handy for several steps in the process. Refer to Article GPU-55 for information on how to identify your graphics card

b.Verify that the operating system has the latest service packs / updates

c.Download the latest drivers for the graphics card from AMD’s Graphics Drivers & Software page. Refer to Article GPU-56 for information on how to use the graphics driver utility

d.Remove any pre-existing drivers / software for the graphics card. Refer to Article GPU-57 for detailed instructions on how to uninstall old drivers

e.Install the latest drivers for the graphics card. For detailed instructions on how to install the latest graphics drivers, refer to:
i.Article GPU-33 for a Windows 7 based system
ii.Article GPU-1 for a Windows Vista based system
iii.Article GPU-2 for a Windows XP / Windows 2000 based system

What's the consensus on this? No major problems lately but I have had problems in the past with drivers and I have always uninstalled old drivers first.

Like I said, a few pages back. The point is that running more than one monitor or a 120hz monitor with the previous idle speeds caused artifacts (infact my second monitor still goes abit crazy when I go to or from a page with flash video on it for the reasons you stated). I suppose the ideal solution would be only to increase the idle speeds if you are using more than one monitor or a 120hz monitor but from my point of view this is better than nothing.

my idle clocks have always been 400 this is because i run three screens. If i only run one screen the idle clock goes down to 157.

At both speeds my fan sits on 20-22% fan speed. I don't see the issue with the idle clock being 400.
