I'm pretty sure the only reason a 7850 beats your 5870 is due to its relatively weak tessellation engine.

Be interesting for you both to run the bench with tessellation off to see how much difference there is then.
 
my card uses two six pin power connectors,so its a lot more power hungry than a 7850,temp wise it hits 72c max and 33c idle but it does have the vapor-x cooler on it,the power draw would be my main upgrade reason other than that its fine

card is the sapphire vapor-x

and yes bob your right,tesselation was improved a lot on 6k and 7k series cards,other that that theres not much difference from 5870-6870


hex's card is the msi

looking at hex's card and mine i have more bandwidth and more texture fillrate,only 1gb of ram though

Heaven 3.0, 1680 (Unigine 3 thread settings), card @ stock, 12.4 drivers.

Ignore that min fps, it was 29fps same as U2.5 apart from one blip near the end where it hitched, if I ran it again it'd probably come back with 29fps min.

Also I put the MSI Afterburner temp monitor in there, 28c idle, 59c max during heaven benching.

Fan hits about 43%, which I can honestly say I can't hear at all.

Card is the MSI TFIII 7850 btw.
 
Cheers for the benchies hex looking real good there mate! Gonna test mine out tomorrow as had to pick up the card from dpd as they could not find my house so they say!

Bit random but did you get 2 packs of cola bottles with your order lol i did yummmy
 
nice now get the memory to 1450 :D just been around to see how my mates new card performed and managed to get stable 1050 on the core like you but bumped the memory upto 1450 which gave him an extra 670 points on 3dmark ;)
 
I'm really tempted to buy a 7870, but the prices are just a little too high. You can get a 580 for less than some of the 7870's. And 570's are quite cheap at the moment too.
