Audi owners in here!

Sold my '99 A4 SE 2.4 V6 last week. 3 years of trouble free motoring and I sold it for near enough the same price that I paid for it.

The problem is I'm having trouble finding something to replace it with!

Why did you sell it before you had decided what to replace it with

An odd choice - it's an ancient car and generationally no different to your 335i - but it's still pretty cool all the same :p

Why an odd choice ? -

I need a 4 door now as opposed to a 2 door coupe ! - i have a family now
I need a car which doesn't need parked up when the lightest flutter of white stuff falls - it very hilly where i live - and yes i can drive
The ride quality of the 335i is terrible on run flats, i have had 2 cracked rear wheels.
I have had enough of my local BMW dealer - long story.
I want comparable performance, build quality etc..
I want a new car with dealer warranty support.

What car would you have bought in my situation ?

I explain why in the post you've quoted - that shape A4 is now almost 6 years old (7 if you count the A5 as its pretty much the same car) therefore generationally it's the same era as the 3 Series you are replacing - a sidegrade rather than an upgrade. I'd feel like I'd got poor value for money spenidng new-car cash on a car thats really getting on a bit and isn't as fresh as other cars in the Audi range now.

Do they do a similar engine in the A6? It's an all-new car. If not, and I had to have an Audi, I'd probably have been tempted by an S3 Saloon - at least it's brand new and smack up to date. Otherwise the F30 335i is, BMW badge aside, quite different to both the S4 and the previous 3 Series as it's a newer generation so if I had to spend brand new car money on an A4 sized car it'd be one of those. The F30 offers 4wd as well to fix your snow-fear.

Or I'd have hung on until Audi replaced the S4 and been first on the list for the all-new model.

But of course it matters not what I'd do - if you love the car, then great :)

Buy a 2011 onwards model not the ancient 2004-2011 model.

Is there a big difference between the A5 and A6?

I will probably be buying in February 2014, so the oldest I would be looking at is a 2011 car.

Are the S5 and S6 just more powerful versions of the A ones?

It's completely different car. The A6 is a large exec saloon, the A5 is a Coupe based on the A4.

Yes. Some people will argue otherwise but they are really just the top trim level versions of the normal A5 and A6. Above that you have the proper ultra performance variants - the RS5 and RS6 which are quite a lot more than 'just a more powerful A5'.

Yes, a massive difference. The A5 is the same platform as the A4, the A6 (current shape) is a generation newer.

If you can get a well specced A6 in budget, yes.

I drove a base spec A6 for a while when I was between A4's and it wasn't the best experience. My old A6 was actually a better place to be.

I don't see the point in buying an executive saloon if you are going to chose one with a hatchback engine fitted to it.

Large executive saloons should have 6 cylinder engines for smoothness and refinement.
