Avatars

custom sigs aren't enough?

What I was thinking.

I think the Don, Commissario and Godfather avatars deserve to be a bigger size, that makes them more noticable.

Very handy for getting people to sit up and listen. :)

Yeh, and if you help out the mod team for a looooong time you get UB, if your just a quality asset to the forum for the year its MoH.

Personally, MoH is the best title you can get on here. I am as I have said all for at least one of the MoH being elected by the users.

However that brings the question, General Discussion people do not know who the hardware people are, I racked up 5000 posts in case central, helping people out, come into GD as a UB and in my thread get posts along the lines of 'how are we meant to respect people we don't know'.

Would mean the GH style people would vote for helpful posters in the hardware sections, and the GD style posters would pick people who contributed good advice for general lifestyle. The thread would most likely be made in GD meaning GH would not get a look in.

Just lots of tricky things to make a public MoH award, and I am sure it has been considered by the Dons already.

Would love to see it, couple of people really do deserve recognition in the hardware sections for just pure good impartial advice yet the odds of them being noticed are slim.

Have to see what time brings.

I'd like the option to be able to hide avatars restored again, it would mean that short posts take up less of the page. I mean look this post, all that wasted space below....

turn off images in your browser then.

There's some images I want to see - but Avatars aren't one of them.

Another thing which would be cool would be the ability to have sigs hidden by default, but with a link to display the sig in it's place (i.e. a single click for a single sig, without having to go into user options and enable ALL signatures, and then go back and turn them off again). Probably quite hard to implement though.

Search this thread for how to do that.

Using pop-up blockers and suchlike is a bit of a cheap hack, and not feasible at work.

A while back I was messing about trying to create 1 pixel files with the correct name and putting it into my temp internet files as read-only, but I didn't have much luck (or patience to persevere).

As for the issue at hand, personally I think if any more avatars above Wise Guy are dished out I'd prefer they be given not purely on number of posts but also length of membership. That way we won't get recently joined guys spamming their way up to 5000 posts or whatever in order to gain a new 'tar. This was something I felt about MM for a long time and I was glad when the time restriction was imposed as well.

I think the avatars should be spread out more with regards to post count. This is a good board, and it doens't take long to get 1k posts...

As far as a 5k or 15k avatar is concerned, it would be the sort of thing that would make me donate my posts to charity because I don't believe that having more posts is a 'rank'.

Perhaps a new form of MoH would be nice, along with an 'Oxygen Theif' tag for those that insist on posting crap. It would be a nice way to ask them to post in a more considered manner
sorry, I just PMSL at your sig

yeah that definately makes more sense than the current system. not only that but why display a users post count in "viewtopic.php" at all? why not just have it in their profile.

yes there has been once or twice where I have seriously question myself why someone would give certain users MoH status, when they do not act with honor on a daily basis, dare I say at all? I agree with greenlizard0 on that one

Name names, its fun for all

Why stir things up here without a purpose? Since the MoH status isn't voted for by the users and doesn't look particularly like it will be any time soon what good will it do anyone to say that they think someone doesn't deserve MoH? The only way for someone to be demoted as far as I am aware is by decision of the moderating team presumably on the basis of observing a members posts and those can be highlighted by RTMs.

I'd agree with Yewen that a public MoH would be difficult to implement, I don't think it is a bad idea at all but GD always appears to dwarf GH(and probably all hardware sub-forums combined) so the voting is likely to be quite skewed particularly as many posters don't appear to venture out their niche all that often.

Personally I find it very informative to see how active a poster they are.

I agree with Tru on this one.

However I have noticed when some people join the mod ranks even MOH whatever, they do change. Their posting changes they see themself as more important, they say it doesn't but as the weeks creep in they consider themselves to be more important and the perception clearly materialises.

Thankfully not all the mod team are like that.

/rant :)

However if a sensible recognised approach to bringing in new Dons and UBs was done by the users, a ballet that would be sensible
