Bahrain GP 2009 - Race 4/17

Before you had both bridgestones and michelin tyres and a multitude of compounds. Difficult to follow.

Also it does matter to the average spectator if they actually want to analyse the positions properly.

You have confused what was said. They were wondering why teams have to use a soft compound and a hard compound in a race.
 
Roll on sunday I fancy LH in the top 3 this week.

I think he can get into the top 3 at the start, but I'm not sure he will be able to keep Vettel or Button behind him. It could potentially make for an exciting race. Can't wait till tomorrow!
 
Yeah Vettel is looking good for back to back wins. Do you get an even better bonus for that CS Nuts?

I think spectators can cope with the idea that some teams used one tyre manufacturer and the other teams used another tyre manufacturer. And the different compounds didn't matter. What I don't get is why must drivers use both a soft and hard compound tyre in a race? What's the reason? To mix things up tactically? To ensure no-one can go through a race without pitting? I just don't get the reason behind the rule.

i believe that the macca is the fastest on the straights which might make getting past and staying past hamilton tricky.

I think it was primarily a cost issue that was also seen as a way to spice up the on track action. Bridgestone was bringing 2 compounds to each race and once the best one was picked the other set never got used. By forcing the teams to use both sets it meant there was less wastage. In addition, having to use both compounds meant that cars would not run 100% on one of the compounds, potentially giving someone on the other compound an opportunity. This didn't pan out as the tyres were too similar, so this year the 2 tyre choices are 2 steps apart.

Most of the overtaking to lead races takes place in the pit-lane. This is where the faster cars such as the RedBull and BrawnGP cars will be able to blow Hamilton away.

If overtaking only happened on the track, then Hamilton would be in a very good position.

For this reason, providing we have a dry race, with no freak incidents/accidents/breakdowns, I can't see how Hamilton can be on the podium.

I'm shocked as to just how fast Trulli can be in qualifying, yet in the race, he is as slow as a snail. And before anyone talks about having a heavy fuel load - he is getting pole position with heavy fuel loads, yet his race never seems to be anything like his qualifying pace. Puzzling.

I'm fairly certain it comes down to focus and concentration. Over 1 lap is significantly easier for the driver than over a race distance.

On fuel corrected Hamilton is 3rd fastest of the top 7 in Q3 so you can't discount him from a podium.
 
The McLaren definately seems up there, at least at Bahrain where they can get good effect from the KERS, good to see Hamilton isn't overly light.

And with KERS you've got to think he's gonna gain at least a couple of positions from the start, is it beyond the realms of possibility for him to get into 1st before T1? not sure quite how good a KERS start can be...

Looks like Vettel has it sorted though, don't think the Toyota's will be able to get enough of a gap to offset the difference in first stint, and any strategy Brawn/Toyota/McLaren think of can be countered easily by Vettel pitting later.
