Kvyat is the most hard done by driver I've ever seen. Never before has a driver who has performed so well been sacked.

Yup. Mainly due to a couple of errors by Kvyat and Verstappen Sr and Jr pressurising Marko for the Red Bull drive. Threatening to go elsewhere iirc.

On the plus side, Ricciardo has no further action on him leaving the steering wheel off the car after it broke down.

Reason was the cars battery was did not go into failsafe and still held charge, so he didn't do it as you have to jump from the car and didn't want to touch it and potentially get electrocuted. FIA Stewards have accepted that.

Some sense from them.

Ah, 2018 vintage Ferrari. Fastest car fails to win. Very sorry for Leclerc but he’ll seemingly have plenty of other opportunities. Great drive by Hamilton to keep up to be able to take advantage and to pressure Vettel into his latest mistake.

I’m loving the pace from Norris, and I think that Sainz may be even quicker if he can complete a race. Those Renault power units do seem rather fragile...

Really good entertaining race but sorry, nowhere near a 10 for me. Not with 70% of the grid simply not able to challenge for a podium, let alone a win. I’ll give it 8. Really looking forward to China - this is shaping up to be a cracking season.

Imagine rating this race a 1 or a 2. oh dear....

It takes a special level of special. It was entirely predictable too. The usual suspects voting 4 or less. You could easily ban all 3 of them. The threads would be better for it.

It is great to see an F1 race rated so highly. Can’t remember the last time the majority were 8-9

Good race with battles throughout. Vettel proving he is completely useless wheel to wheel. Drs was far too powerful today. Zone needs shortening for future races.

Leclerc absolutely nailed this Weekend. Hoping he can keep that going and put in a fight all season. Hope mclaren and Renault keep up the development as that midfield is looking great all so close together.

4K8KW10 hasn’t voted yet, expect that will be another low score.

I don’t advocate banning these guys though — wouldn’t want to be accused of lefty suppression of free speech. ;)

It was a really entertaining race and I hope the season produces more like it.

I'm still a bit confused as to how Hamilton caught up with and overtook Vettel, last I saw was Hamilton's soft tyres from his first stop had given up and Vettel on mediums had clawed back his deficit (and I thought was then sailing off into the sunset). Next thing, I returned from making a cuppa and Hamilton was all over the back of Vettel, with them both pitted a second time presumably.

Did Vettel's mediums go off a cliff and then put up a worn, third set of tyres?

Really pleased Leclerc got a podium. Such a shame he wasnt on the top step but like he said - thats racing.

Very impressed by his maturity and humble persona.

Mad result for Renault - never seen anything like that before.

Overall a strong 8/10 for me for the race. I do feel for Vettel - but in his interview he owned up to it being his mistake. He isnt quite Grosjean but he isnt going to be WDC with all these mistskes.

On that note - wtf is wrong with Grosjean. He seems intent on ******* his potential away.

I've just finished watching the highlights, it's safe to say Ferrari's 'insurance policy' worked pretty damn well besides the fact that Vettel continues being an unmitigated disaster.

They weren't threatening anything, they had a great deal. Most RBR drivers are part of the team for years, have long contracts that are favourable to RBR. Verstappen was funded by his dad for a long time, spent little time in expensive single seaters and had HUGE interest from multiple teams. He supposedly had a get out clause that anyone offering a full seat and RBR don't then he can leave. Jos wasn't saying anything, Ferrari and Merc were straight up offering seats for the start of the next season. RBR's only solution was to give him the senior seat and Verstappen is far too good to let leave.

Kvyat didn't really make any major errors, it had nothing to do with his leaving. Vettel over reacted in China to what was a great move. He hit Vettel in Russia but the writing was on the wall, the negotiations were either already done and he knew that was his last race or it was pretty much guaranteed. Maybe a win in Russia would see them booting Ricciardo instead but not very likely.

Basically RBR had to make room and despite kvyat being good, Russia isn't a big F1 market, the race is new, Australia is far more widely supported and Ricciardo had vastly more fans/marketing appeal than Kvyat. I think that was really the main reason for the choice. There was no good decision for RBR to make but they had to secure Verstappen's signature, not doing so would have hurt them far badly.

Mercedes know they got lucky today. Ferrari know that reliability cost them a Leclerc victory and Vettel cost them a second driver on the podium.

Renault know that tomorrow is Monday. Everything else is a mystery.

You're sure Renault know it's a Monday? Their cars seemed to think it was lap 60 in a 57 lap race and decided it must be time to stop.

Seriously though RBR got a lot of, "but Renault's cars fail less often, it must be RBRs fault" last year. For me last year I said the reason for that is RBR were in a position to push the engine and then win races so why wouldn't they, if the engine was more powerful they would have to lean on it less hard to be competitive. Renault were a often comfortable 4th fastest car but often 30-60 seconds behind Red Bull, turning up the engines wouldn't gain them podiums and they were safe to the guys behind them. Basically Renault didn't have to push hard so had more reliable engines. This year the midfield is much much closer to them, pushing them harder and boom, engines are going up in smoke.
