Baldur's Gate 3

Not played it yet but if it's anything like bg1 then, perversely, there's a very steep curve for beginners. Literal babes in the woods. Some classes have it harder than others like a wizard but even melee can struggle to hit anything if they aren't proficient in whatever weapon you manage to get your hands on early doors.
They also put monsters in you simply aren't meant to beat yet but can come back later when you've got better gear, more companions or levelled.
Does this game show the level of opponents? Originals didn't, you only found out when you saw them cast or do something you can't!

It shows the level. Cant say I have had too much issue with misses, yeah they are there but I have not thought it was excessive.

Yeah it shows the opponents level which is the same as mine for the matriarch (i think) and I think the others are lvl2 spiders. It's not that they are hard it's just the amount of misses that is frustrating. I went with a wizard for my toon and have a warrior, cleric and a 2nd wizard too but the amount of hits I can do vs the amount the enemy inflicts on me seems a bit lopsided.
;)

So I am still playing and almost lvl4. The combat I do not actually find that bad but I do get some of the comments when you miss 2-3 times in a row, but it is not all the time.

The story so far I am enjoying but although at first I looked past the DOS2 'reskin' comments, the more I play the more it does feel too much like a DOS game. The lore, the classes and the rules are definitely D+D for the most part, but the what is plays and interacts is literally DOS3 right now. I do hope they fix the placeholders and some of the interactions to remove it from its DOS feeling, but if not I will still play and enjoy it.

I think it's inevitable BG3 will feel like a "re-skinned" D:OS2 given it's the same developers, using the same ( but enhanced ) engine, with similar mechanics to interact with the game environment eg. exploding barrels, elemental effects. For me personally, what put me off both D:OS games was the writing / tone of the games - Larian "humour" ( or silliness ) just doesn't click with me. For others I imagine it's part of what made them love these games. I found the silliness less intrusive in D:OS2, compared to the first game, but the physical/magic armour mechanic was fundamentally broken and restricted my freedom to play the game with the characters/party I wanted.

Anyone care to comment on the writing/dialogue in BG3, thus far ? Is it more mature than the D:OS games ?

well im having a break from this for a while while they work on it. Got up to level 4 and , judging by streamers, there is a hell of a lot still to get through and i've max'd level already which is a bit disappointing. I'm trying to like it but just cant at the moment. Its just too frustrating for me. I hate all the party members and their stupid "quirks". The mage who needs to eat your good gear, the vampire who needs to eat you etc. I hope they allow for a fully custom party on release so i can bin the lot of them. It is Divinity 3 and not Baldurs 3 which is no bad thing. I liked the Divinity games but im just finding this too much of a slog at this stage in development.

Ive gone back to replay Pillars of Eternity which does actually feel like a Baldurs Gate game and am loving that :)

I am halfway to level 5, assume its a hard cap and even if I get the xp it will be locked out.

Mage and cleric party members are starting to feel quite good, my ranger however is still crap.

I don't think there's enough XP available in the current content to hit 5
Cleric I think builds best as a heal tank, but her offensive abilities are kinda poor. Necrotic Touch is quite good though

Heh, went after the Hag, got to the end bit, no hag present, googled and managed to get her to show up. Just stood there while I beat her to death......:D

How did you get her to show up? I googled also but can't find anything. Get through all that fire then and before you bring the girl down in the cage, but nada.

I brought the girl down using the control sphere thing, then wandered around looting, then after googling I cast create water all over until I saw a red circle. If you are stood with the hags chamber door to the left and the girl in front the hag was right there. Didnt even attack me and I just beat on her till she died.:p

Ace, will need to give that a try, thanks!

I managed to 2 turn kill her while she was still disguised in her hut. All characters in stealth, backstab her with a rogue to initiate combat. She doesn't go invisible because of the surprise.
Then enter each party member into combat with sneak attacks one by one. Down to half health before I even start my turn, then just finsh her off

I think that's one of the few things I don't like about Larian's combat system being used in this game.
I really don't like it when games allow you to cheese fights that are supposed to be deadly challenges.

I'd really like for them to rework the system so that it's a bit more true to the proper rules for the D&D tabletop game where once one character triggers combat, that should be it and all other characters in the area should be pulled into the initiative order... the other characters can still attempt to use stealth during combat but they'll be limited by their combat movement and won't be able to act out of turn.

Personally I love it, but I'm a meta whore, min-maxing type and try to break any system I touch.

My first playthrough of the early access content I killed her by pushing her off a cliff :D

There's enough XP to hit above Level 5 (some say enough for 7 even), but the current EA limits it to 4 maximum anyway. I believe Larian wants to see how levels 1 to 4 players handle the game and that's why the limit. If we can go past it, the likelihood is we will storm past everything easily.

I ran a Warlock with Shadowheart, Gale and Wyll, and if we had access to Level 5, myself and Wyll alone will be 1 rounding a lot of enemies in current EA from our Eldritch Blast that now has multiple bolts/blasts.

I'm close to level 4 so will stop playing soon after reading about the limits. I'm not sure all the quests can be resolved either in this area.
Quite enjoy playing a Halfling Rogue as the once you get into position, you can one shot with a sneak attack.
Rest of my party is as above: Shadowheart, Gale and Wyll.

Managed to give away a lot of the junk I picked up by not moving the merchants money in the Barter/Trade screen. Gave him about 500gp....

Had a few camera issues with either being stuck (switching character seems to resolves that one) or the characters disappearing in a couple of areas until you move them to a different part of that area.

Not a fan of the dice roll as it sometimes seems to go epically wrong just to suit the story, I would rather do that myself and input the result, if other people want to 'alter' their rolls on that it can be up to them. Wonder if they would make it an option?
