Baldur's Gate 3

According to the data as of 9am this morning, Baldurs Gate 3 has sold 63% (since 6pm last night) of the total number of sales that Baldurs Gate 2 achieved in its release year. So I dont think theres any danger that it will globally kill the BG franchise, in terms of financial success its going to far outstrip any previous Baldurs Gate title.

I prefer turn based over RTWP - for much the same reasons as Chroniclard (I end up pausing so much that you might as well just give me a proper turn based mode), indeed the only reason I fell in love with Pathfinder Kingmaker was the turn based option. Having said that, I would prefer it if BG3 had both options, so that people could pick the one they prefer. Equally, having said that that, I would also prefer if every RTWP game ALSO had both options so that people could pick the one they prefer.

I've done 6 hours on BG3 so far and got to say I'm loving it. Looks great, looks more modern than many RTWP only games, enjoying the voice overs, liking the puzzles, enjoying the story and the combat, feels much more like I am playing D&D than most RTWP games that I have played and actually feels sufficiently different (aesthetics aside) from Divinity games that it feels like something new. The CRPG genre isnt one which is overflowing with new games, so I'm happy to just get one to play !

I too also have brought the EA - there are some entertaining bugs, such as Wizards being able to learn divine spells, but I suppose it is early access so I will let it off.

I will support it just because I am fan of Baldurs Gate 1 & 2 but I have zero expectations that this will be anywhere near as good as Shadows of Amn. I also am not so experienced with the 5e ruleset so time will tell if I will get into it or not. Off the bat its missing the alignment system I definately liked the alignment system but we will see how it goes i hope Larian add it as a feature. I would hope they at least nail the story and looking back at BG1 it had a great story, but the character development aspects and the level cap just limited the fun factor as low level characters in D&D are pretty tame as they should be early on. I found myself skipping most of the additional content in BG1 (tales of the coast & Durlags Tower just so I could get to SoA which to me was a much better game.)

I gotta say D&D games capping you at something like level 10 is lame as hell because you never get any of the really interesting late level specs

One of the most appealing things about the next Pathfinder one is you can outright become **** like a lich or an archangel

I hadn't realised there was no alignment system, that's big. I'm still unsure of Larian were the right choice so I'm watching some streams and seeing what happens before I buy

Wow thats a massive oversite surely.

From what I have seen and read so far, this has turned out to be steam sale purchase, unfortunate :)

You have to blame Wizards of the coast for that, it was them who specifically told Larian to tone down the alignment system. There was an interview a while back where it was revealed that WOTC had said they wanted reduced alignment system because thats how it is in D&D 5e, so it wasnt Larians decision and thus wouldnt have mattered who made the game. In fact Larian wanted to make alignment more impactful than WOTC did.

Devs on alignment ...

Yeah there's a lot of people weighing in on how things should be like "they didn't even put a healing cantrip in the game" who obviously haven't touched DnD in 5e

I actually feel quite sorry for the Larian devs, you often seen on forums that people are having a go at Larian for "stealing" the BG franchise or changing this that and the other, yet in almost every instance its actually WOTC who decided on it being that way but Larian gets the flak for it.

Hell, even if they did "steal" it I'd always choose Larian to develop a cRPG over Obsidian in 2020. Obsidian have only gotten worse over the years while Larian goes from strenght

I haven't touched 5e outside one session of LMOP. But I'm also not interested in this as a DND game, I'm interested in it as a Baldur's Gate game. I play BG1+2 through annually, and was excited for more.

You can both say I'm wrong for judging Larian for its take on DND (OK fine, a lot of it might be WOTCs input), but I get to choose what I'm looking for in a product, and its fine for me to be disappointed in aspects.

Edit: I'm also very specifically not writing it off. I hated Neverwinter Nights on its release and I think my comments are archived here somewhere, but ended up enjoying it eventually. I'm just sounding off things as they come up, and the alignment system is a big draw for me.

How did you feel about Neverwinter Nights 2? Specifically the Mask of the Betrayer expansion
Based on my extensive play over the weekend (30 hours) I can see this being a great one for evil characters in the same sort of way. i.e. you have
a power that is ostensibly bad but feels good to use and gets more powerful as you use it, but will consume you

The companions so far are very compelling as well. I'm particularly fond of Shadowheart, Astarion and Gale for both gameplay reasons and just how interesting their backstories are. Gale even has some cool stuff happen the first time you let him die
I'd probably like Wyll if he wasn't such a goody two shoes, but who knows they may let you break him like they let you break Atton in KotoR 2

About 6 hours in and I can't say I'm overly fond of any of the companions so far - their stories are interesting but I've been tempted to kill them and go solo way too many times because they have such irritating personalities.

Is the game quite linear or more free world?

The RPG games Ive played recently Ive enjoyed buy they all seemed a bit too linear.
Well so far there's only Act 1, but if other games of its ilk are anything to go by it's free word at least within the acts
Like you'll be dumped into a huge area and can move as you wish around said area. without being funnelled down a set route

I am semi regretting the purchase, have not been back to it, think I am level 4, usually cant get enough of a good RPG. Will revisit at some point.

4 is the highest you can get with the content currently available

What do you regret about it?

Ah if 4 is the cap for now then I will wait. :)

Just doesn't "feel" that good, combat is a bit so so and so far I feel Div 2 is quite a bit better. Granted its early access and some stuff lacks polish, plus the bugs, so it will get better.

Now I know it's early days and the game still has a long way to go but when it comes to combat are the amount of attack misses really supposed to be this high? Even after reaching the lowly lvl4 it's like 80% - 90% of attacks are missing. Even when in melee range of a GIANT spider it's miss after miss after miss meanwhile their attacks seem a lot more consistant. I really enjoyed DoS2 and have played countless other RPG's over the years but this is starting to get annoying. Don't get me wrong of course I don't expect to hit every time but it's clearly lopsided towards negative outcomes. Or at least that's the impression I am getting after trying to take on 2 phase spiders, the Phase spider matriarch and her small brood and ended up rage quitting after repeated attempts/reloads.

Not played it yet but if it's anything like bg1 then, perversely, there's a very steep curve for beginners. Literal babes in the woods. Some classes have it harder than others like a wizard but even melee can struggle to hit anything if they aren't proficient in whatever weapon you manage to get your hands on early doors.
They also put monsters in you simply aren't meant to beat yet but can come back later when you've got better gear, more companions or levelled.
Does this game show the level of opponents? Originals didn't, you only found out when you saw them cast or do something you can't!
