Baldur's Gate 3

Started a new game playing split screen with the wife, works pretty well. Just need to start a normal game with 2 controllers plugged in and both have to hit a button on the character creation screen

Is this a hard game? im tempted to give it a go as love rpgs..but... i didnt get on with diablo 4, the dungeon bosses were way to hard for me lol
I have no experience of D+D games and I am doing ok. Still learning things but I have managed to reach level 4, and halfway to level 5. Still on Act 1.

I am loving BG3.

I tried to like D:OS and D:OS 2, but neither worked for me.

BG3 is just way more fun - chaotic, loads of room for experimentation, every dungeon is a joy to play. The freedom of choice and the numerous ways to approach a situation or fight are brilliant. I think it might be the best DnD game ever.

I'm using quicksave & quickload a fair amount, but it doesn't bother me - I just enjoy testing the limits of the game.

I seem to be in a bit of a power vacuum at the moment. Half way through level 4 and struggling with fights. Aunt Ethel and the High Road Gnolls one shot me regularaly. It looks like ive cleared out most of the map around the druid grove and goblin camp so having difficulty finding XP to get to Lvl5. A lot of it is my lack of tactical knowhow but still, im finding the lvl 4 to 5 jump hard going. I think if i go into the underdark now , i'll just get turned into mashed potato.

Use the high ground where possible by sneaking your team individually to a high point and use shadows where possible. If you are on the low ground, fall back. It really makes long range fights easier.

Or before Ethel’s cave go clear the Goblin camp and clear it out from the high ground. Or set a choke point on the bridge with Gale casting grease and your team using AOE potions to slow down the Goblins. Three enemies is a good target for an AOE potion. One enemy is a waste.

One very important tip is to give every character a range weapon. Don’t waste magic user spell slots on weaker enemies. It is also easy to fall into the trap of grouping up your team, keep them spread out to minimise AOE spell effects. Nothing worse than your entire team succumbing to fear and all dropping their weapons and running away, or losing most of their health due to one goblin’s well placed fire bomb attack.

It is also sometimes worthwhile ganging up on weaker enemies first to whittle down how many enemies you face. For example if I have a fighter flanked by a strong enemy and weak enemy, I will focus on the weak enemy first. Even if it means using one of my special high damage moves to one shot the weak enemy. This way you are not taking two hits for every one you get.

And don’t forget to have your own potions and spell scrolls that fighter can use.

Had a similar sticking point. Managed to find some better weapons. Specifically a big ol' sword for karlach, and that really helped get me through the next few fights

One minor complaint is that the game doesn't really offer the full freedom to play how you want.
Earlier BGs catered responses for pretty much any style but I feel I'm forced to be nice in a lot of interactions.
Had to jump through hoops for example to kill a potential party member near the very start.

I think there's limits with how many branching paths we can expect from a game and this far exceeded my expectations. You can always ctrl click to force attack things ;)

There's some strange interactions going on between how things work in 5e and how they work in BG3 that has caught me out a few times now. How Haste works, shields for mages, Boxmancy still being great/silly etc. I'm less happy about being knocked prone and effectivly losing a turn although it needed something as it's almost pointless in 5e.

Go to the underdark under blighted village, I'm level 7 and I think I've got through most of the content in act 1. Sometimes fights can be negated by taking alternate routes or using the environment to your advantage.
I've played games like this before and I'm finding balanced a little tough, I've spent hours on a couple of fights only to realise there is something I can take advantage of which halves the difficulty.

What have people been doing with all the green armour and weapons they pick up? I would have sold them but the trader attitudes are always neutral? Anyone know if we will be able to break the items down at some point?

You need to give traders gold / items for free to up the attitude. Higher gives you discounts and is worth having at least one trader in the green from what I've seen. My go to is to simply slowly give them gold until in the green and then toggle to the Trade mode (off Barter) and click the sell all wares button. Then toggle back into Barter mode and buy things.

I've been keeping some greens for utility etc. The real problem I have is books, that now get transferred into another backpack in camp storage. Don't want to sell them as some contain clues etc. but they do have weight. Not knowing which items can be used for other things in general. Do I need to keep a hammer and tongs in my bag, maybe an apple on the off chance someone asks for one. :D

Haha same issues, I have way too many camp supplies too!

I hadn't even noticed the traders have attitudes! Although tbh I don't think it matters too much as I've amassed about 15k gold by the end of Act 1 anyway so not had any issues buying anything I need

I wonder if different items are on offer if traders are "green"?

I just hit level 5 as a Wizard/Necromancer. Bit annoyed really as i obvs chose a Raise Undead spell so ive got a Companion/Pet (I do already have one but want an undead). Used the spell, and now everyone i get close to runs away and cries/panics. I mean, I get it. Theyre going for realism and consequences etc. But whats the point in the spell at all if youre only raising stuff before a fight (when you need a body to do it too). Am I missing something with this?
