Bands you wish were better known

Another couple of my American guitar band favourites, first up sister Hazel a little folky but brilliant none the less.

Followed by Vertical Horizon, maybe familiar to smallville fans but definately not mainstream in the UK

Kidneythieves :)

Dead Girl Walking

Zerospace (death of Morat anyone ?)

Taxi Cab Messiah

Before Im Dead, If you watched the film Queen of the Damned you may recognise this.

Red and Violet

Im also going to throw in Poets of the Fall. No idea how big they are outside of England but they are unheard of completely aroudn here. Some great songs too. Carnival of Rust, Locking up the sun, Lift etc.

I believe one of their songs (Late Goodbye) was used for the end credits of Max Payne 2.

Same goes for The Delays. Had 1 top 20 album (highest position of 17) and then each album dropped lower but really should have been bigger than they are.
(ignore the mexican in the middle of the 2 songs)

It's an interesting point I've never really understood how bands like the Goo Goo Dolls and Matchbox 20 can be so massive in the states yet make so little impact here. For years they have churned out good quality and in some casses Matchbox 20 - Yourself or Someone Like You brilliant guitar pop.

Some really good picks in this thread so far, it is amazing how much talent is out there just outseide the mainstream.

I wouldnt say they made little impact. Last time Matchbox played here was like 2 years ago I think, and my friends opened for them, and they had no problem selling out Wembley then, and I think every time before that too. The big difference is the radio play. Over in the states there are many radio stations there dedicated to the Matchbox, Goo Goo Dolls, Sister Hazel, Nine days style of music, and they continue because of the large populations from state to state, that mean there are always a large group of people listening to this music, making it much more sustainable! Not only that but college radio is also a really big deal over there and helps people of college age find this music, whereas over here, people skip past it as all we have to offer really is radio 1 (Look at Bush for example, they are a British band who only made a slight dent here, but due to massive college radio play in the states, now 14 years later, Bush are still played at least once a day on KROCK) Over here, those bands just dont get any radio play (I remember hearing Push once on the radio over here and thats it). In the states radio play still drives a lot of music sales, whereas over here, MTV seems to drive more of the sales. So it really does come down to just the way the music is presented.

For me it has to be Mark Kozelek (Red House Painters and Sun Kil Moon), a truly great Folk Rock and Blues musician.

I'll chuck in a vote for Failure also. Amazing band far better than many others around at the time. The Fantastic Planet album is brilliant but you're pretty much limited to ebay for all their material now.

Zico Chain. English rock band. Played download a couple of years ago, were on the first hammer magazine - get in the ring competition. For me they really should be bigger, seen them 6 times, hope the iminent new album gets them somewhere new. Still playing pubs and small clubs currently which is criminal.

+1 for Zivo Chain - saw them in Notts not long ago, bleddy good band

Agree with this, although I've only been listening since that Gears of War 3 trailer came out with Heron Blue on it. Went on an album buying spree the day after. :D

It doesn't matter how or when you come across a band really, a fan is a fan all the same.

Just watched the GOW3 trailer after what you said, hopefully now they will start to get more recognition for their work :) , thanks for bringing that to my attention. :D

Time for another one by the OP

1. British Sea Power
Amazing band. First saw them at Truck Festival @ Steventon 2003.

2. The Music
Another amazing band. I've yet to meet anyone who's into their music even slightly who doesn't love this track. Pure indie/rock/dance crossover. Epic indie club tune.

The Virginmarys

They are a local band and are now starting to get noticed, they toured with slash back in July/August and have recently completed a full European tour with Skunk Anansie, I think they will make it big some day!

They are playing the Deaf Institute in Manchester on Friday btw ;)

These two bands are pretty well known.
