BARGAIN - OcUK 24" with DVI (*VA Panel) for £179.99+VAT (This Week Only Deal!!)

Now I remember looking at these. Unfortunately I cannot do the same test as I moved my old faithful Digital CRT in the loft.

I have the same DGM monitor, very pleased so far. I think your test was one of the reasons for me to go for it.

Cheers.

i should be purchasing one of these fine monitors sometime today while they're on offer, as soon as some funds i'm waiting for clear.

are there any major reasons why i shouldn't buy this monitor?

To sum up the thread, the power LED is a health hazard it will blind you unless you tape over it, or blutac it. The stand is not great, there's wobble if your desk is unstable and there's no height adjustment (tilt only). The monitor has no HDCP support.

Other than that the image quality is great for the price range, ie if your monitor budget only extends to 200GBP, you cannot do any better. (except if you need HDCP). There is still an element of panel lottery, there's really no way to know what panel you are going to get before it gets delivered to you, but it will be a *VA panel that normally comes in a more expensive monitor. Chances are you'll love it.

thats great. i've never used anything but a TN panel in cheap monitors so i'm sure the magic-panel-lottery won't matter to me.

HDCP? isn't that that draconian HD video thingy? doesn't affect me in the slightest.

Lastly, my dest is rock solid, so i'm sure i'll be fine with the stand, thanks for your help.

now i've just got to wait for those bloody funds to come through!

Wanted to bring up a well known isue with these monitor series (Yuraku, DGM, Iolair, Novita, Iisonic) across Europe:
the lack of backlight control i.e. too bright

Or were these latest batch improved? I had to return my Yuraku because my eyes hurt after 10-15 mins of use (especially during evening). Had to wear sunglasses behind the monitor...

The thing is there is no backlight control available, BRIGHTNESS in OSD menu only affects the panel itself and not the backlight.
Simple way to find out is output a fullscreen black image (use a pixeltest prog for instance) and then alter brightness in OSD. If you set the brightness to around 40 and start lowering it and black does not become blacker-> no backlight control!

This is a real killer issue for this otherwise great monitor. So far I'm surprised not a lot of (OC)uk buyers have mentioned this issue whereas there are humongous threads on German, French and Finnish boards.

Backlight control can be enabled via a simple bypass cable mod, but you would need to open up the monitor (real easy, 2 screws and click it open!) and check if the PSU board inside is compatible.

So for me, unless in broad daylight, it could not be used normally as it was twice/triple the comfortable amount of screen brightness to work behind.
The thing that baffles me is that other monitors that also have VA panels in this price category all seem to have a lack of decent backlight control (Daewoo, Hyundai, Gateway)...

So, i will be getting a refund, if not, i will seriously take this further. I have witnesses that were there when the monitor was being set up, and once it was set up, too, who know that it wasnt rattling at all.

I was charged today £22.27 for some reason. I have emailed asking for a complete refund of the monitor price at the price i paid, the delivery costs, and whatever this £22.27 is thats been debited from me today.

So, have you received all your refunds?

So, have you received all your refunds?

Still awaiting it to be in my bank, but yes, they will be refunding all of the money, and the £22 automated charge has been refunded. Have had an email stating that I will get an email from a manager confirming the refund.

Pretty pleased with the service really, glad i got all the money back. Will be buying the yuraku soon, once a certain shop gets it in stock.

Hiya's,
Well just got back from OCUK :)

Seems my replacement monitor is AU-M240UW01 V0 so it's the FP241W BenQ :) (Nice :) ) Ohh and a quick check shows No pixels damaged :D

Over the years i've spent a small fortune on pc's and sundries and 99.9% was spent at OCUK

Had only 2 rma issues since about 1996 (but i drive there as it's pretty local so no posting and waiting) One was a few months back and that was some Ram and yesterday a damaged Monitor, Not bad ehh for around 12yrs of upgrades for me and everyone else i send there :) (and you may not believe this but out of everyone i send there i'm the only one that had a problem well 2 really)

Both occasions a straight swap with no hastle

And also on both occasions obviously the products were at fault from manufacturer which obviously is nothing to do with OCUK

I am glad to keep spending not only my monies but friends/neighbours/relatives/clients at this place because in this day and age THEY DO Have The BEST Customer Care i've come across especially in the competative world of pc's and accessories where lets face it a some companies take your money and seem to want to fob you off at the slightest sniff of a problem

I for one hope the guys/gals there continue to lead and show other retailers that customers are not there to just hand over their hard-earned and be ignored when a small problem arrises

Bravo again OCUK

What more can i say (no more i hear you whisper lol) a great company to deal with :)

All The Best

Have Fun

Ciao

Just got my OCUK 24" and I'm very pleased with it so far. Looks basically the same as the Yuraku -- you get HDCP with the Yuraku, but you get an extra DVI cable with the OCUK. That's about the sum of the differences I can see so far.

Hopefully this one won't break inside the week.

Will be buying the yuraku soon, once a certain shop gets it in stock.
You probably won't fare much better if it's the shop I bought my Yuraku from. Their RMA system doesn't allow you to request a refund or deal with the shop in question directly -- they immediately try to push you towards the manufacturer. I ended up having to write a very dry and horrid RMA request and insist on a refund to get a reply, and they've yet to reply to my request for advice on how I should get it back to them (as no couriers I've tried will insure a monitor, and RMSD would cost £20+)

In short, I wouldn't hold your breath. To their credit, though, they did post my product review even though it contained negative comments pertaining to their customer service and RMA process.
