Still plenty of servers, I find the search settings can be a bit dodgy. I have only played about 3 times in the last year though. I blame Planetside 2 lol, do plan on playing BF4 though.

Hi there. I recently got BF3 from the Humble Bundle offer, only to find just a few active servers, less than 10, out of which some are empty most of the time:confused:
Is it because i don;t have the DLC (like Back to Karkand, Armored Kill etc)? Will there be more active servers if i buy 1-2 of them? Which do you recommend?
Many thanks!;)

Something not right, there's loads, try restting your filter options.

Also, use Game Tracker to find the best servers. I've been using this one:http://www.gametracker.com/server_info/81.19.208.31:25200/ this weekend and it's standard maps. Been having some great games, right down to the wire games and good team work. Loving it this weekend.

Seems odd lately that my fps has been dipping like it has.
Some maps, Strike at Karkand, Caspian border i get drops to about 40 at the worse, mainly in openish areas, sometimes they happen and sometimes they dont.

i7 2600 @ 3.4ghz
8gb RAM
nVidia 680

All the temps are fine and i'm just confused as to why it is performing poorly like this, caspian is fine if i bump anti alising down to 2x but karkand and a few others dont go too great. It's a shame really.

Try closing your browser after the game starts. I find that sometimes if I leave my browser running it causes intermittent framerate dips every few seconds

Caspian border has always been a pig to run.

Install afterburner or GPU-Z and check your GPU usage during dips. Check your CPU usage too with task manager.

My new ASUS 144Hz monitor has an inbuilt crosshair function, as below... hacks? ;)

It comes in very handy for HC mode

Lol, on this new mobo ive got theres a feature known as sonic radar, basically an overlay that indicates where gunshots, footsteps etc are coming from. Havent tried it yet though. As for audio, damm i miss my xonar DX, onboard sound on this board is rubbish.

anyone ever had an issue where midgame, the game restart screen is displayed then you get kicked from a server with either the msg "timed out from server" or the classic ea "something went wrong...." ?

only started happening today and no system changes etc have been made :(.

Anyone know of anywhere I can get the Back to Karkland DLC cheaper than origin?

I went it buy it a few days ago when it was £5.99. By the time i got to the checkout it had doubled to £11.99 :(

I've been wanting to play BF3 for ages and finally got round to it this weekend. I think I need some help learning to love it!

I used to play a fair bit of COD4, which I loved.

With BF3 so far I'm not really enjoying the vehicles at all. I seem to end up either on a massive map, which means I have to use vehicles (or spend ages running like an idiot...), or I end up playing team death match, which I really like, but it always seems to be on Canals. While it's a decent map, it just seems to turn into a zerg, with people charging around and me dying a lot.

So, what should I do to help me love the game? Any recommended maps or game types (or ones to avoid)? Or do I need a certain (or all) expansions?

Cheers for any tips.

Do you have any of the expansions?

I am enjoying TDM too as a new player - I don't feel too bad about my bad kits as I unlock things, and if you res/resupply teammates they seem to be genuinely happy about it. Nosehair canals does seem to be the defacto standard map though. It's pretty fun if you equip your recon with an SMG/shotgun and use the motion sensor in the crate pile.

There are a few TDM multi-map servers - I THINK scan uk have one (not at home to check favourites) - I think number 7 of 7 of their servers. Those tend to be more fun (for the variety) but also more frustrating - I spend more time learning the maps (and therefore dying more) and they seem to be more infested with bunny-hopping halfwits, which annoys me no end for some reason.

Thanks Mockingbird, some really useful tips there.

I don't have any expansions at all. Do they unlock any maps that lots of people are playing that might be more aligned with my interests (i.e. non vehicle play)?

the biggest problem you have is the game is 2 years old and everyone else playing it is an expert now. So even if you are inherently good at fps games you will be outmatched by even mediocre players.

with the game coming to the end of it's life you should probably concentrate on just a few areas of gamplay and a small number of maps so you can get up to speed with them.

I wouldn't necessarily agree with that. FPS game are one of those things you're either good or bad at. I haven't played nearly as many hours as some people but when I sit down and play it properly I can get near enough top of the leaderboard in many games.
