I love the BBC F1 coverage, but I think it's pretty questionable value in the big picture. Mind you, I'd be surprised if ITV are willing to offer that much for it, and if it goes PPV - well, I'll probably just stop watching it.
BBC4 is great, I wouldn't want to lose that or F1. BBC4 is where the BBC has shunted all of it's niche/public service stuff so that they can fill BBC1 & BBC2 with cheap LCD crap. Programmes like 'Chemistry: A Volatile History' simply can't be found anywhere else.
BBC3 on the other hand is a complete waste of bandwidth.

Austria != Australia
Bernie is committed to FTA and ITV basically don't want it so it makes sense by the BBC to rattle the cage a bit to get the price down. I can't see it going elsewhere.
Even if there were links to something Bernie said to prove he's commited to FTA, we all know what he's like when it comes to changing his mind, eg. Bahrain.
And all it takes to change Ecclestones mind is a big bucket of money. Which he then has to give half of to his wife.
The pre race amble is awesome, sometimes it's more exciting to watch than the actual race!

Exactly.Simply because the teams and sponsors want it, and without those, Bernie doesn't make the money he wants.
pitpass in an article said:As [Williams Chairman Adam Parr] knows all too well, F1 doesn't chase the highest buck when it comes to the sale of television rights. It is a rare case of Ecclestone having a driving force other than money and it is in the best interest of teams like Parr's. We are talking of course about the fact that Ecclestone deliberately sells F1's TV rights to free to air broadcasters in order to ensure that the teams get the maximum exposure to TV viewers so that they can command high sponsorship values.
