Belgium Grand Prix 2010, Spa-Francorchamps Circuit - Race 13/19

Vettel's crash was down to misjudgement and error. I don't think he was being reckless. He tried to brake late (perhaps he had a little brain fade as well) and his car began to fishtail out of control. During this time, Button happened to be right in front of Vettel's (out of control car) and he collected Button.
.

He lost control due to the sharp swerve.

the aftermath of the car, is very much important. No point giving a drive through to someone who is no longer racing. I have no doubt Vettle would not of been punished if he rejoined in 20th or retired.

It's also very important on why and how they lost control, in the first place. No one is going to get punished for a clipped wing running side by side though a corner, or misjudging speed difference with a back marker.

However you can argue a case, for someone following making a massive swerve losing control, taking out a championship contender whilst rejoining just outside the points in a perfectly healthy car. I think it is the sum of all of those which got him the penalty. Remove any one of those circumstances and he would not of been punished.

Watching that just confirms it for me really, Vettel changes direction of his own accord rather sharply and ends up in a spin because of it, rather than just spinning under heavy braking and not being able to save it.

edit - the distinction is not purposeful/accidental, it's avoidable or not. Webber's accident with the Lotus could only really be avoided by driving uncompetitively slowly, something it isn't reasonable to expect him to do. At those speeds, the reaction time when someone brakes so much earlier than you are expecting is tiny, there was little he could have done to reasonably avoid that accident without defeating the point of being in a race.

With Vettel though, he could have reasonably avoided this by not setting himself up to attempt an overtake that was clearly impossible and also by not handling the car so harshly when he ultimately decided to back out of that idea and swap sides. He made two decisions that can easily be viewed as rash/reckless which is why I think he did deserve some punishment for that. If he hadn't been trying to make a stupid move it would have been easily avoided. He obviously didn't intend to take out Button but he did drive in a manner that caused it to happen yet could easily have been avoided by not driving like a twonk.

Just got back from Spa for the second year in a row.... God I love the place! Hopefully the lads and I shall be going again next year... fingers crossed.

Man I feel completely knackered after way to much beering it up and BBQ's in the pouring rain! Oh, and the Germans as ever, were a bunch of crazy loons!!!!

Gutted when Button got taken out.

Loved it when racing resumed after the final safety car and Rosberg pushed Schumacher out the way. Not sure who was in the lead prior to the manouvre, Rosberg definitely was afterwards though :D

Of course, the question now is, , if you're one of the championship leaders and Vettel is behind you challenging for the position, do you just let him past and ensure that you survive to finish the race or do you roll the dice and fight for the position? Spa certainly doesn't disappoint. Might go next year, didn't realise how short the drive was. Might make a bit of a road trip out of it.

If you're alonso you break check him as you have an invincible rear half of the car :p

Not been home long so not had chance to go through all the photos, but a quick shot which summed up the weekend for me...

JB is perfectly likely to get more wins - but given the situation with the DC only if hamilton is out of it.

Fair or not taking out a lotus is not the same as taking out a championship contender then going on to profit from it.

If the top teams keep the same drivers next year I'd love to see Mclaren put together a car that is the class of the field - then we'll see some fireworks between JB and Hamilton, I hope ;)

I imagine JB will be called to play the support role from now on unless Hamilton has a couple of failures. I imagine Hamilton will be pushing in that direction now.

Certainly webber has good cause to get no1 driver backing for his bid, Red Bull need a drivers champion.

Of course, we can look at it this way - Vettel tanked into that braking zone expecting his RBR Flexing Wings Of Ultimate Justice™ to help him maintain control. So really, it's the FIA and race stewards who are at fault for making them play by the rulebook.

:D

I hope Horner doesn't read that, yet another excuse he can use for the golden boy. I never liked Ron Dennis much for the BS he used to spin and the way he favoured drivers (as can be seen in the picture in this thread with his boner when his prodigal son wins) but Horner has become a bit of a numpty this year in his efforts to defend Vettel.

It is quite possible that RBR's PR team realise that Vettel is coming under some serious fire (for what ever reason) and that the team (management) must be shown on TV to defend him at every opportunity.

only because schumacher had 2 backmarkers infront of him going into eau rouge which meant he had to lift off :| its how rosberg gained 2 places after the safety car.

i dont understand why the safety car just didnt let back markers go by

It's just the patented 'Red Bull Flexi Wing of ultimate downforce the FIA can't accurately test edition 2™

I heard that they figured out a material that is rigid when it's not moving but turns to rubber when it's going fast, they have a patent waiting for approval of carbonrubber :p

More likely the loading changed in the turbulent air as he came up behind the mclaren. Another reason why rapid change of direction, that close and in the braking zone is a bad idea.

I wonder if it caught him out this time because the red bull wing was modified? Although they say it wasn't.

Oh and Horner did criticise Vettel, not a lot, but it's the first time he's said anything remotely negative about Vettel.

So Button considers Vettel out of the title now...

"He's made too many mistakes this year to fight for the world championship but he is extremely quick, we can't take that away from him," Button said.

Interesting as Vettel has more points than him.

And Button is optimistic about getting back to winning ways at the Italian Grand Prix in Monza on 12 September.

"I'm in a position now where I've just got to go there and hope for a race victory and work towards it," said the Briton.

You don't hope for victories you go out there and take them you great big girls blouse. £10 says before we even get to qualifying Button is talking about a loose front or rear end, balance issues. Then qualifying 5th with his team mate on pole.
