Benq FP241W (Now available from OcUK!!!!!)

Hi baddass

You are the resident monitor Guru on these forums so can I ask you too answer a few questions for me please.

1.will the dell 2407 handle 1080p over VGA?

2.I understand it will do 1080i over component/dvi am I correct?

3. would you say that in the 24" range that the dell is the best product at the sub £700 catagory?

4. are there any negatives to buying the dell (other than the banding which I understand is a lot better in later revisions and not really noticable in day to day use)

I thought it didn't do 1:1 with a 1080p source via VGA? Now I'm really confused.

ah, you didn't mention that in your list :)

While there are very few 1080p source devices it's a little hard for people to check for sure. Dell have said that the screen won't support 1080i or 1080p material though

No worries, I'll try :)

Dell have said that the 2407WFP will not handle a 1080p signal. However, due the very limited availability of true 1080p devices it's hard for users to check and confirm for sure.

It will do 1080i over component bu NOT over DVI. The Genesis controller chip used for the DVI interface cannot handle interlaced signals. Read here for more info :)

I'd say so really. The BenQ FP241W looks to be an impressive monitor as well. The Dell really is a very good price. Sure, there are a few issues with it as there are with nearly all TFT's, but i think you need to consider how much they would affect you in real terms and in pratice. I'm so sick of reading misinformed hysteria on the Dell forums about colour banding, input lag, HD support.....:p Colour banding was a big issue on release with the A00. Now with the firmware fixes in place, i really doubt the "issue" is a problem to many people in REAL use. You'd really have to go looking for it with colour gradients, and in all normal use i would really question whether it's a problem. Input lag is an issue on all TFT's, but to varying degrees. Again, if it doesnt affect your normal use then why worry? The HD thing is perhaps the most disappointing, but it can still handle 720p fine which is far more common nowadays anyway. If you want a HD device then get a TV realy, this is a desktop monitor :)

ah, just summarised this before i read the last question! :) My advice would be dont jump on the bandwagon about these "issues". Look at all the perfectly happy people with the screen and ask yourself whether these issues would really matter in real use to you? Unless you're a photo worker / colour enthusiast then the banding will not be an issue imo. Check that link i gave above too for more details about the issues with the screen

on dell 24" A02's that show banding, is the banding the same on black to grey as it is on colours? its really important that the black to grey gradient is true for me as i look at microscope images down to single pixels and have to distinguish between black and very dark grey between adjacent pixels. I would buy the dell if the black to grey was ok but the colour was knackered but i have a feeling that they show similar results.

yep, it's a similar result. If you're doing highly sensitive work like that, it is one of the uses which would be an issue on the 2407WFP

Anyone notice this has now been delayed until November?

These delays are so annoying, as I'm really interested to see how this screen turns out. Perhaps the delay is to fix the 1:1 mapping/aspect ratio issue?

I phoned BenQ support yesterday to ask about the 1:1 mapping and the release date and they just kept telling me early october and reading the website back to me over and over again!!!

The Lady at BenQ support just kept saying that you have to run everything at the native res. and it would be fine then she recommended I view the flash site as this would answer all my questions WTF !!!!!

I'm getting a little fed up with this screen TBH I have had my order in since the 5th october along with a lot of other gear (£2300 worth).

I think I might just cancel the lot at this rate and just stick with what I have at the moment because the parts I ordered are never going to ship while BenQ play silly buggers with the release dates.

Has the price gone up ?

i dont know anything about monitor production, but i would be suprised if they sheduled a release date for october, then delayed until novemeber to fix 1:1 pixel mapping. surely by now there will be thousands of monitors sitting in a warehouse. They arent just gonna throw them in the bin.
