BenQ XL2730Z Freesync Owners Thread

17 brightness with blur reduction off????? The screen is dark and lifeless, or thats how it feels to me. Guess we all have very different eye tolerances.

Yeah I hope they put back in the broken/removed strobe options.
Having 60-144 hz single strobe is VERY important to me.
The Benq XL2720Z can single strobe at every custom refresh rate from 60-144 hz, if default timings are used. With custom timings (higher Vertical Total values to improve strobe crosstalk and lower ghosting), most refresh rates work (76hz is one of the problematic ones). 60 hz requires 1360 VT (with bizarre timings, otherwise the max is 1260 VT), most other custom refresh rates will strobe properly with values of 1498-1502. 85hz wont strobe correctly with VT 1500 (or 1501 or 1502) yet 1498 is flawless.

I need custom refresh rate tweaking for games like COD Advanced warfare which is FPS locked to 91 fps. Using 120hz refresh rate with a 91 fps locked game causes very annoying stutter which I can't stand.

Creating a custom refresh rate of 91 hz (with a VT tweak also) fixes that right up for some nice smooth 91fps/91 hz strobed BULLDOG FACEHAMMER fragging action!

But this can't be done on the XL2730Z at the moment. Even 100hz strobe is broken, and without a single strobe override, no refresh rate under 100hz will single strobe, so this functionality needs to be re-added into their firmware. They can do it easily. They did it on the older Z series with just one firmware update.

Original Z V1 firmware did not even allow custom strobe duty/phase changes and double strobed at <90 hz.

Since I have an AMD Card, I REALLY wanted this monitor and I was VERY VERY close to ordering it from newegg over a month ago, just to do a gaming review of it, including finding out which vertical totals worked and how it compared to XL2720Z. But then suddenly someone dumped V4 firmware out of nowhere for the previous Z series, which basically turned them into almost a new screen, which didn't make the upgrade so enticing now. But with the TFTcentral review, that basically saved me $700 dollars with tax.

I would have been VERY angry if I had purchased this monitor in this state, as strobing is far more important to me than freesync is. Freesync would probably be better for me in games that have low FPS, like 64 player battlefield 4 servers, though :) :)

I think that depends on color settings.
I use 100/98/96 or 100/100/100..

Lowering the color settings can have a pretty big effect on how it responds to brightness, though. Also, lowering the color settings can affect the white clipping point of contrast levels. Some XL2411Z users got nice settings using 80 (!) contrast, by lowering the RGB channels. Using 80 contrast with max RGB settings turns everything yellow and crushes everything.

On my unit a brightness of '20' gave 95 cd/m2 in 'Standard' without any colour channel adjustments, so that would only really be suitable for particularly light-sensitive users or dim rooms.

When I used your settings the 45 brightness was honestly hurting my eyes, nuances of yellow or purple in a scene would essentially "scream" at me. So yes, different tolerances indeed. I did find using your settings with Blur Reduction on to be fairly comfortable. As I said, I'll be doing more tinkering, I'd really like to find a spot where using this monitor would be comfortable, so I don't have to return it - the rest of its included features are quite nice.

Still looking for a 27" freesync monitor, if i purchase this one now would it be fair to say it will need to be reflashed at sometime or another, or are the ones in stock now ok to buy ?
Thanks

The ones in stock now will all need to be reflashed. BenQ still hasn't made any statements regarding how that will be handled. I would wait and see how the situation develops over the next two-three weeks.

Well today my problems are back again with the screen truing black again and unable to recover it and when i do get it back it stuck @60hz and i have to plug in a hdmi connection then swap back to displayport again to get my 144hz , so today i've contacted Benq support . So we will see who that goes as i don't have proof of purchase as i won the display in a competition over ' guru3d .com , i've sent screenshots of the announcements that i won and of AMD matt's personal message to me for my delivery details and of telling me i had won , i just hope that this is enough proof or i may be stuck with a defective screen which i really hope doesn't happen as when its working its a real nice screen.

Benq really needs to have some sort of transparency between their customer support and marketing departments (AND gaming departments!), and their firmware engineers. On their own web shop, all of their previous Z monitors are shipping with V4 firmware now, yet the description for the 2720Z says "now with V2 firmware!!). I can't even seem to reach someone on the phone to get them to say "Now with V4 firmware!") :/

Well regarding my problems , i've heard back from benq and they have told me to wait until i've upgraded to the new AMD card that's coming out soon (R390x ) and that if the problem is still there they will issue me with a RMA for the monitor ,
In the meantime time i'm running with a custom refresh rate of 124 hz and this has seemed to have stop the back screen problem for now i think .

Could anyone tell me if my screen problems that i have at 144hz (Black screen then slipping back to 60hz ) be related to my sli bridge in any kind of way ,Thanks.

Sorry if this is redundant but have you tried a different DP cable? I almost returned this monitor for a similar issue. When i set the monitor to 144hz the screen would start flickering and going black sometimes it would go black and never come back, but it wouldn't do this with DVI or HDMI. It wasn't untill i purchased a new cable from amazon that this made the issue go away.

My issue now is i feel like im not getting the performance i should be with the build i have pushing this monitor. I see other similar builds averaging 70-90 fps in GTA 5 with settings maxed and i can barely average 40

I can't tell if this is a driver issue or what but this just doesn't seem right.

Hi Dreldan ,
yer i tried a different D/P cable and still had the same problem @ 144hz :(
Over the last day i have been slowly increasing the monitors refresh rate starting from 120hz ,and at the minute i'm @ 140hz and so far since late last night and up until now today i've not experienced the black screen issue , so i will just leave it now @ 140hz for the next few days and see what happens .

Regarding your issue Dreldan have you tried running some benchmarks eg 3Dmark fire strike and Heaven Benchmark and then compare those scores with others that have same hardware ,rather than a game which can perform differently even on similar systems because of drivers and bios,s software installed, ( just a idea ) but that's were i would start if i was you.

PS, last year i was having a few games that wasn't getting the same FPS, and not running smoothly as they were previously , Turned out to be a failing Power Supply , once changed ,bang all back to normal .

Its not even an isolated issue,I had the same problem and returned it thinking it was a screen/driver related problem...
They could've at least included a decent dp cable with such a premium screen.

The problem is that it seems to be pot luck with DP cables and 144hz. I know people who have had expensive DP cables that didn't work and cheap cables that worked fine.

Usually, a shorter cable works best.

In that case its just poor QC,which is inexcusable for the price they are asking.

I am not too sure what the problem is, but a lot of 144hz monitors have had difficulties with DP cables. It reminds me of when HDMI first came out and all the problems devices had with handshaking back then.

It wasn't a QC issue back then and I don't think it's a QC issue now. Like I had a Marantz receiver, a Pioneer Kuro LX 5090 TV and my PC all connected using HDMI. I could connect my PC to the TV or PC to my receiver with one HDMI cable, and in both situation the cable worked fine, but the same cable would not work between my receiver and my TV.

well everything still ok for me atm, still using 140hz with no black screen or flicking, lets just hope ti stays like this .

PS Dreldan Do you have the link to the D/P cable you got from Amazon as there's so many ?
many thanks . Jason

Hello all. I am new here and i recently bought this monitor.

I have one issue :
I think it is working fine but i have an issue with the Display pilot software. I am running W8.1 and have an ATI R9 270, displayport connection to the screen. Now, the display pilot software recognizes the monitor, but there are no settings in relation to auto game mode or display settings. This means that the "auto-display" function isn't working.

I already reinstalled the software, even went so far as to clean up and uninstall the drivers and install last year's (2014 04 - as per some older post on another forum), but all to no avail.

Anyone here who can point me in the right direction, or even better has a solution to the problem?

Thanks,
X.
