BenQ XL2730Z Freesync Owners Thread

Rave what settings do you use with this monitor now? I'm still trying to figure out what looks best. Is it still true that freesync does not work with blur reduction on?

Yeah unfortunately blur reducyion only functions on a fixed refresh rate and therefore won't function with Freesync where the refresh rate is always fluctuating.

Chase BenQ and/or RepairTech up via e-mail, I didn't get any contact after 36 hours until I instigated it. Then the process was very quick and worth it!

Have just sent BenQ another email...might do the same to RepairTech. I go away on July 10th, so would really like it all sorted by then. It should be...in theory.

Currently (after a recent change):
Blur reduction off
Black eq 5
Color 10
Low blue 0
Instant on
Auto game on
Brightness 45
Contrast 50
Sharpness 7
Gamma 5
Color temp normal
Ama high
Dynamic contrast 0

...and no Freesync since it still doesn't work with crossfire well and also looks horrible without the firmware update.

Is this a limitation of blur reduction technology or of this monitor? Can gsync monitors support varying refresh and blur reduction? I could probably figure it out by reading up but it's the answer I'm interested in not the journey to get there :)

It's a limitation of the technology, but it's very possible. The problem is image quality.
The only monitor that can single strobe at 60hz refresh rate is the Benq Z series and the XL2430T (the 2730Z can't since Benq omitted the single strobe option from the service menu). But have you seen 60hz single strobe? It flickers pretty badly, just like a 60 hz CRt.
And 50hz single strobe (ONLY possible with a vertical total tweak due to a firmware bug) flickers MADLY.

Can you imagine this with freesync?
If the strobe adjusted dynamically to variable refresh rate, the screen would go from being nice and pleasing (100 hz'ish) to dropping on a dime to a framerate drop to a madly flickering mess. This would make the blur reduction feature just an eyesore with freesync. It would be a worthless feature unless your fps NEVER EVER dropped below 80'ish fps :/

I do agree that it should STILL be possible to at least enable it, but it's fully understandable why it doesn't work. Trust me.....you would be driven insane by 50hz strobe flicker at 50 fps.

Great, thanks for the detailed response :)

For what tasks does one use blur reduction over freesync or gsync? Is it just for heavy desktop work, or is there ever a situation you'd use it in games?

As it happens I'm asking because I'm really keen to try out the Asus IPS equivalent of this BenQ monitor, but that has no blur reduction mode at all. If it's just a desktop thing I can probably live without it.

Any game where you can maintain framerate=refresh rate 90%+ of the time benefit far more with blur reduction than freesync and gsync.
Freesync and gsync both still use sample and hold which have blurring and theres nothing you can do about that (the only way you would NOT have blurring on a traditional sample and hold LCD is to have a refresh rate of 1000hz AND have framerate=1000 fps.

CRT's have strobed since before the time of computers. Benq blur reduction is very similar tech but theres a big difference in how pixels on LCD's vs phospors on CRT's work.

Think i'll pick one of these up when i get a Fury X, how will you know you're getting a one thats already had the firmware update, and is the firmware update only needed for the Freesync ?, as im not really interested in that, its more the 144Hz, as ive manged so far without having Freesync, so im sure i can carry on without it :p

The firmware upgrade was for the AMA to work with Freesync.
Without it, Freesync is working fine, regardless.

I believe all new monitors right now have the V002 version on, or after July 1st.

I sure it the 1st of july ,, or thats what i read somewhere in these forums :) :) i think

Best screen i've ever had , i couldn't see anyone being disappointed with it

Thats it then....My screen securely bubble wrapped by about 4 inches all around lol. Box all secure, no damage, taken pics and videos. Screen just been picked up by DPD, so far everything gone perfectly, if there's any damage to that box or my monitor when it gets back, BenQ will be getting it lmao.

Likewise, mine was collected this morning so now just the agonising wait for it to be returned while I'm left with a very crappy 1650x1050 screen in the mean time :(

Am now waiting on DPD to arrange a pick up.. did they auto contract you?

yes they did shanks..they emailed me and text me on Friday notifying me that collection would be today. 7am this morning received a text and email from dpd stating collection would be between 9am and 10am.
