BenQ XL2730Z Freesync Owners Thread

I found a decent video comparing the 29ub65 (pretty much the same as the 29um65) to the swift (should be pretty similar to the benq) and going by this video, there really is very little difference when viewed head on (some areas the LG looks better and in other areas the swift looks better), no idea about calibration etc. though:

That's very interesting... wouldn't have expected that. Assuming it is accurate to real life, not just through the camera that's filming it? You'd probably find the moment you moved 15-20 degrees left or right, things would change very noticeably, but for head on viewing (as is the norm anyway), I'm really surprised how neck and neck they are.

I wouldn't say it is perfect representation but it is certainly one of the better videos comparing them.

Here is the original video that guy used (looks amazing!):

Obviously in person, it looks much better in terms of colours etc. than what you see in that video.

Only thing that's puzzling is I read MANY comments from people who've moved from IPS to TN and don't like it, and miss the IPS colours... I haven't seen that said about this monitor admittedly, but if it's a non-issue here (as the video would appear to suggest) I can only assume this is one exceptional TN panel.

That looks simply stunning on my display.. Colours and detail look very rich.

Yup it really blew me away some of the scenes there particularly at 1.02

Any luck with your blacks yet shankly?

Yeah exact same here! Especially on overclock.net, so many moving to the acer from the swift and saying the acer is miles better for colour :/ Although I imagine a lot the people making those comments don't properly calibrate the monitor and only really adjust the brightness, gamma and contrast... IPS generally looks a lot better out of the box than TN.

Yeah changed my brightness abit but even before I did at http://www.lagom.nl/lcd-test/black.php
I could see all the black squares.. To see the detail in them screenshots above I need to higher my brightness what seem way to high?

So am thinking them images look like they from movies? these are normal RBG limited, on PC I run RGB Full and in CCC have it switch to RGB limited when movies are running.. So the reason I think its completely black for me is based on my RGB level..

Could be very well wrong here.

You shouldn't really be putting your brightness any higher than 120cd/m2, which is about 20-25%

After that is adjusted, move onto the contrast adjustment and you should be lowering it till you can see all the gray squares in this test:

http://www.lagom.nl/lcd-test/white.php

254 is very hard to see.

The gamma setting can also have an impact on that test.

You should be keeping the pixel format set to full RGB all the time.

I think that your gamma is set too high, use this after you do the brightness and contrast:

http://www.phototopics.net/pt_gamma/

At first, colours etc. might seem a bit washed out compared to what you were using but chances are whatever new setting you use will be more accurate.

I am also very interested in the b grade for £299, what would the possible drawbacks with this be?

I am aware it will have the old firmware, but what other problems could i be looking at, and what would my rights for return be if not happy?

It could be everything or nothing... that's the risk with B Grade. Sometimes it's just a damaged box or because someone doesn't like it... or sometimes it will have BLB. Not sure how excessive this could be, or if you'd have a load of stuck pixels, as I imagine this would be deemed faulty and wouldn't be resold. You are within your rights to return it as with anything else.

Thanks changing my Gamma level on monitor from 5 to 3 has helped me see the detail in the shadow more.

I was thinking that £200 is a big chunk to be taking off, so doubt it would just be the box had been opened. I think I'll take a punt tomorrow, might be something that I could live with. Nothing ventured and all that!

I ordered the **B-Grade** on Saturday so it should arrive Wednesday (I'm in Ireland), the £200 discount was too good not to take the chance on.

While I can't speak for what condition the monitor will be in I can say that I have purchased and returned a **B-Grade** monitor to OCUK in the past, the S34E790C, and there was absolutely no problem, just told them that the backlight bleed was a bit too much for me and we arranged the return, really couldn't have been easier.

Cool! let us know how it goes, thanks.

I had to adjust the exposure of my photo to show the detail that I could see with my eyes so it makes the image/blacks look more "glowy" although the 2 left corners have a bit of IPS glow, which is visible in real life but not quite as bad as shown in that photo.

Good to hear detail is visible now though!

Wondering if I should try the b grade as well as they will need to be returned anyway for the firmware upgrade and going by the reports here, it sounds like they will replace the panel anyway so any issues like dead pixels etc. might be gone with the replaced panel assuming that is what they are doing....

£200 cheaper so my gut feeling it will be something wrong with the screen that some may find acceptable but not to me :(.

I bet there is nothing wrong with the BenQ monitors in the clearance section. My Guess is they were purchased when first released and were returned because AMA did not work with Freesync.

So the monitors in the clearance section don't have the upgraded firmware and if you purchase one you will have to return it to BenQ to be upgraded. It's about a ten day turn around time.

What was the process for returning the monitor to benq etc. like shanks etc.?

Most important thing is did they arrange for a courier to pick the screen up?
