Best Retro Handheld

Just tried to fire up my RG35XXH, aaaand the SD card is dead. Probably used it 4-5 times....

Code:

Going to use this as an opportunity to try out some additional firmwares. Any recommendations? By all accounts Stock + mod seems to be flavour of the month?

Also does anyone know if the stock ROM contains everything from factory?
Was that the stock sd card? Surprised it lasted as long as it did!

I have muOS on my 35xxH - and really like it.

Also treated myself

Looks like the anbernic rg556
It is!

How you finding it? Currently my front runner (if I cat justify/afford a legion go/steamdeck).

Did it come with any games pre installed?
So far so good. I decided against a SD card included. Mostly because the quality is ususally pap (of the card and the ROMS themselves), and also I quite like to self curate.

A bit more set up than a linux device (I have expiernce of the RG35 models) but nothing difficult - plenty of helpful guides.

Haven't used loads but so far;

  • PS1 and below - as expected perfect. Upscaling PSX by 5x. Using Retroarch for most of these
  • PS2 - just tried suikoden 3 - ran perfectly at 1.5x. Not the most demanding game
  • Android - Minecraft / Stardew Valley / Evoland / Vampire Survivors / Stumble guys all run natively with conreols and perfectly well (there is the ability to map the controls to games with only on screen controls if needed)
  • Steam link (one of the key reasons I bought it) runs perfectly well. Ran Outer wilds & FF7 Integrade. Obvs probably calls more on your PC / Network, but the decoding / controls are fine

The main complaints appears to be the sticks. There is now a "fix" for this (https://github.com/TheGammaSqueeze/Bootloader_Unlock_Anbernic_T820/releases/tag/analog_fix) but to be perfectly honest after an hour of outer wilds & FF7 I had noticed zero issues so didn't bother with it. Maybe I will as time goes on.

Only slightly odd thing is the d-pad squeaks a tad when pressing down, but only sometimes. A few people have reported this, but also said it disappears after use (assume the membrane bedding in).

Nice guide regarding the sticks.

I've actually been tempted to try Xbox ultimate (cloud) on it as I've not turned on the Xbox in years. Play with a few friends etc...

This seems pointless to me. 0.5" more of screen.
Same internals (CPU, GPU, RAM) as the RG35XX H, only smaller battery than the H for a larger screen??
Yep the battery is disappointing but I like the dpad location. I'll only upgrade if they release an RG405m with the dpad on top essentially which is doubtful.

I still think the RG35XXH is the current perfect take it everywhere retro console, for up to PS1.

Price, performance, form factor, feature sets, OS. Good balance across the board.

Damn I wish I knew the bigger 40 H was coming out as my 35xx h is just a little smaller than I’d ideally like

Edit considering they’re going to be $70 or so maybe I’ll just get one anyway

Just curious, what launcher are people using? I was using Daijisho for a while but then went to ES-DE, both look good but there are things I like about 1 and things I like about the other.

I've started just using the base Android desktop and manually selecting emulators.

I was also using Daijisho and then moved to ES-DE. Most systems seem to work fine with either but I have issues with Aether since the dev nerfed it.

Don’t suppose anyone will be interested in these: https://www.analogue.co/editions/pocket-aluminum

I might have ordered one. A bit OTT just to play Tetris, but it can do other things too so…
Too expensive for me, but a very nice device.

If you can afford it and want it then no need to justify your purchase.

Well, at least not to us, maybe to your other half if you can't pay the mortgage this month :)

At least I’d have something to play whilst in the dog house :D

I’d been wanting one for ages, but they were constantly out of stock and there was no chance of getting a LE one previously, despite repeated attempts.

Keen to try out the additional cores, plus being a handheld it might be more accessible. I haven’t had a handheld since my PSP 1000!

Been using my Odin 2 a lot while on holiday this week in Greece. Performance of this thing is pretty incredible. I loved both Wipeout Pure and Pulse on my PSP but being able to up res and have stable 60 FPS is awesome.

I would have liked a white version but went with the base model at the time which was only available in black.

I think I'll pick up the super dock as was considering putting together a new retro mini pc but it isn't that pricey for the dock and looks decent, can include some some official skittle coloured buttons too.
