Best video doorbell....

I have a eufy homebase 2 a battery door bell and 2 2proC ? cameras...

I recently bought a Google nest battery camera to try as i was pretty unhappy with the delay of the eufy doorbell to capture movement, often outright missing a delivery.
I used it for 3 days and decided to take it back for refund..

Reasons why....

Subscription fee, only 50 quid a year but without that you have only 3h playback and zero advanced features....
The integration with all the google kit i have at home was utterly disappointing. Same as Eufy, the integration is honestly slow and awful. Not what i was expecting. It rang every single one of my speakers in every room, utterly ridiculous, no way to fix that. It worked well with smart screens, the only good thing.

Google doorbell had terrible light balance the picture was very dark... totally lost detail. This in turn totally ruined the AI face detection. All faces i registered it identified as me, regardless...
That was the final straw. You pay for that feature, read about the issue and it seems to be a common failure, utterly useless.

One good thing It is faster at picking up people on my driveway, but the picture quality was so low detail.. disappointing.

Out of those 2 systems i really recommend neither.... Eufy is "free storage" but the latest 3rd generation is bloody expensive... Id love to test the homebase 3 it but the price... jeez.
I might buy one to "try" then return it after testing or keep it if it actually has working AI detection....

If you have smart home hubs and invested in google and dont care about advanced features, just want a doorbell with 2 way chat and picture. Id say the google nest battery is "good" but try and get more from it, started uncovering annoyances and non working features that i just wasn't prepared to pay for.

I'm wanting to venture into the world of having a video doorbell and wondered if there were any realistic alternatives to the almighty Ring system that I should be looking at?

It needs to be battery powered as I'm far too lazy to work out how to wire it in but at the same time I don't particularly want to be saddled with a monthly sub!

Also, if Ring is the way to go, what's the difference between the various versions?

The new Aqara G4 Doorbell would be perfect for you. It can be battery or mains powered and works with iPhone - Apple HomeKit and HomeKit Secure Video if you have the relevant iCloud+ Subscription (50GB Plan gives you HomeKit Secure Video Support for one camera). If you don't use an iPhone then it's still a good option for you using the Aqara app and also works with Alexa and Google Home.

It will also be receiving a firmware update for Matter support in due course.

I've got one sitting on my desk waiting to be installed, plenty of great reviews of it on YouTube.

I have an 8 camera CCTV system so can see and be notified of pretty much anything but....
I don't use a doorbell cam, I use a PIR "driveway alarm" to sound an alarm that someones entered the property boundary (via the driveway anyway) and that can be heard by anyone inside the house. Doesn't use cloud or the internet for those of you with privacy concerns... but that does mean you can't get the data when away from the property either.
But if I get cam1,cam2,cam3,cam4 notifications from the cctv I kinda know someones walking round to the back door anyway.

Does that work on android phones and also on home assistant?

Yes, you can get the Aqara app on Android.

I know you can run Aqara products in Home Assistant but not sure if there are integrations for the G4 Doorbell yet, it's only been on sale for a few weeks. You may want to look/ask on the Aqara/Home Assistant reddit for a full answer?

It’s chunky alright!:p That’s mostly down to the batteries though.

Certainly from the Apple Home (HomeKit) side of things it’s got a lot going for it. All existing HomeKit doorbells haven’t been great for one reason or another.

Aqara have got a lot right with the G4. It’s also good that this is the first battery powered HomeKit doorbell too.

It’s no surprise that the first run pretty much sold out instantly.

I think it's at stock right now in the forest unless it's a different version? Costs just over 110

It's £119.99 currently. It sold out very quickly with the initial release when it was released for sale. Aqara also gave an introduction discount on it as well which helped it sell out.

I used that Aqara discount along with gift cards I had and got mine for £11.99

And with this door bell. There's no subscription needed to store the footage myself?

No subscription. You get 7-day cloud storage included. The Chime box has a microSD card slot on it as well and in a future firmware update they're going to be adding SMB NAS support too.
24/7 Recording thought is only available via mains power though, it would take to much power via batteries.

There are some great reviews on YouTube for it, well worth a watch if you're considering it.

I haven't installed mine yet but I'll be using mine with Apple HomeKit, so I'm using HKSV via my iCloud+ subscription to manage my events and recordings not the Aqara app.
