A Specialized Rockhopper Expert is pretty well spec'd up; the Fork has a lock-out for your road riding and it should leave you enough for the other accessories you want.
It comes with SPD pedals so you'll need to buy some SPD shoes or replace them with flat pedals.

Continental do a superb range of road tyres for MTB bikes : http://www.conti-tyres.co.uk/conticycle/SSGpage.shtml

Is the Expert really worth £200 more than the comp disc?!

The major difference between the Expert and Comp is the fork and wheels. Other parts on the Expert are lighter/stronger.
I guess if you are only going to use the bike for light off road use then the Comp Disc wil be fine.

It depends what you mean by 'light' off-road use. It's main use will be commuting on road, so I'm guessing a lockout feature of the fork is a must. When I do take it off road on the weekends occasionally, it would be used for around the NE trails and in the Lakes mainly.

I managed to total my XT Shadow rear mech 30mins into the Penmachno trail on friday :'( . A bad shift put the rear mech into the wheel locking it up, bent the derailer hanger on the Heckler and bending the mech body. I was lucky the local bike shop still had the older prices for Shimano. £45 for a new XT rear mech as opposed to £79 at Coed Y Brenin!

I gave my brother my Scandal yesterday and I took out my old Carrera, first time he's been off road and tbh I'm pretty amazed he didn't break anything expensive :D "DON'T USE THAT GEAR!" "LOOK OUT FOR THAT ROCK!" "AND ALSO (while still looking out for that rock) TRY TO ALSO AVOID THE TREES" Good ride though, it's nice to ride a shonky bike sometimes to remind you how good the good ones are.

Anyone know how the inside of the Sram X7 shifter is assembled? I need to change the cable for the rear derailleur.

I opened it up but the spring came out. I cant figure how it goes back together now :(

The Rockshox/SRAM website absolutely stinks for shifter diagrams and manuals, frinstance there's 2 different designs for X9 but only one is mentioned at all :P I've got X5 and X9 but no X7 to look at but I assume it'll be similiar to one of the 2 so if you can put up pics I can compare

Are there any pump tracks in the london area (more north london), as I need to work on my pumping and doubles, had an off at aston hill last week damaged tendons in thumb (wont bend properly now) but I am now ready to try again.

Prefer not to do the 44 mile treck to Chicksands (imo better pump tracks with move forgiving transitions to fall on i.e. not rocks)

Hey all, rather than make a thread I thought I'd ask here; I'm hopefully going to be buying a Specialized Enduro (SL Comp, 2008) in a few days, it's been a while since I've had a bike (that didn't get stolen after a month :(), the last time I did I was quite young and used to just borrow my dads tools/other equipment when I needed to maintain my bike, it's about time I had my own stuff.

Could someone give me a quick overview of what you think is absolutely necessary to have in terms of tools and other equipment for maintenance (such as lube, grease).

At the moment I know I'm going to need:

Allen key set
Torque wrench
Spanner set
BB tool
Spoke key

Grease, lubricant, possibly some kind of muc-off bike cleaner?
Set of brushes
Chain cleaning tool - how necessary are these? Is it not possible to just use a brush of some kind?

Could someone recommend a good shop to buy all of this from? I've been looking on chainreactioncycles as they seem to have a huge range of stuff, how good are the more bike-specific tool manufacturers such as Park compared to more general and well respected ones like Snap-on? I quite like the idea of building up a collection of quality tools that'll last a long time rather than get stuff that'll do the job.

I'm really excited to get all the gear together and properly maintain my bike over its lifetime, so any help would be appreciated, thanks :D

Here are a couple of pics of the shifters, front (Left) and rear (Right).

Its the rear one I cant get to work. The spring as shown in the pic has fallen out pushing the 'up' shifter forward. It no more clicks or moves if you get me.

Any help would be very appreciated :)
