Still looks good in this pic, just not as good as the promo pic.

I think i'll keep my rockhopper.

Calm down, it's only a few splashes of green paint on the frame.
I saw the pic above on e-bay yesterday and thought the bike didn't look as good as the in studio shot on the cube website.

First Time Trial of the season our club ran, one of the lads turned up on a Dolan track bike, running fixed as well. Only draw back he found was the carbon saddle was a tad uncomfortable for use on a tarmac track. Fine on a smooth velodrome surface though. Looked stunning and being carbon weighed next to nothing.

My frame is the Pre-Cursa so it's the lowest level track that Dolan do (more relaxed angles etc). To be honest it's not likely to see a velodrome, or even in fact a proper track, it will be almost exclusively hitting the lovely London roads.

Almost complete... just need to decide on bars and tape/grips.

Today has been **** old bike day in Northwind's garage... I'm slowly rebuilding my own '91 steelie mtb for road use but also decided to have a look at the other 2 old bikes buried under heaps of rubbish up the back.

First, one brother's Saracen Rufftrak, a mid 90s hardtail with 60mm of elastomeric goodness up front, and a weird oversize steel frame designed to look like aluminium (I think). 21 mighty gears, Shimano's finest SIS! And all weighing in at a svelte 16.6kg. Not in bad shape at all though, so I put a few hours in and now it's as bad as new, apart from the forks which offer no noticable damping, but have the most horrible topout I've ever felt, I'm guessing the elastomers have shrunk or perished. It's really quite nice fixing old wrecks though, therapeutic, I even got out the t-cut and tidied up the paint a bit.

Then, onto the main attraction, other brother's Saracen Raw 2. This was horrible new, the years have not diminished it :D Sadly not the modern one, this is an '00 model, y-frame single pivot full suss. All the joy of gripshift gears and undamped suspension at both ends. It got hung on the garage wall about 5 years ago after the BB wore out and nobody could be bothered to fix it. I'd hoped a rest might help but the BB is still worn out :( I decided to weigh it too, almost broke both my arms trying to lift it into the scale- 18.8kg!

So, I think some sort of Horrible Old Bike Ride beckons, I think it could be fun to take these 2 steamrollers to glentress and see who dies first

Yesterday I fractured my left collar bone and it's hurting bad. :(
My front wheel washed out on lose berm and my shoulder took the full force.

No riding for 8 weeks :(

Ouuuch, bad luck mate. Hope you make a speedy recovery! I'm recovering from a dislocated shoulder. Nothing to do with cycling, I fell out a tree. Still have 3 weeks before I can ride again though :(

Looking at a new crankset, but i aint sure whats good, as usual theres many many variations, i use my bike for XC stuff mainly, so something light and stiff. Now my understanding is, the HollowtechII stuff is the stuff to go for, so something like an SLX-XT-XTR, but what about the lesser Deore Model, using the same tech..as im a bit low on funds, but the turativ crankset ive got keeps coming loose, so needs replacing.

There's nothing wrong with the Deore, it's the heaviest out of those but if you're on a budget it'd be fine. SLX is the all-mountain variety, heavier than the XT but stronger, and it's cheaper. I run the double chainring SLX and it's spot on, if you don't mind the weight penalty I'd go for that.

Also, if you go for the hollowtech cranksets you'll need the correct tool to fit it!

I've not used the new Deore but it's supposed to be good. I use an SLX myself, the weight difference between it and XT is trivial- about 40 grams IIRC- and the cranks are actually a wee bit stiffer so it's not just weight penalty. They were pretty much a no-brainer when they were £70, not so good now though but they can still be had for £100 if you shop around. XT is a bit outdated just now, the range is due for a revamp soon so the current SLX is really much closer to it than it should be, shimano's range differentiation's gone slightly wrong.
