Anyone wanna give me a hand?

I'm looking for some clip-on pedals and shoes for my 2008 GT Avalanche 1.0.

Utterly lost on Evans Cycles :p

Don't want them to be toooo expensive, but not crap either.

Basically if anyone could just point me in the right direction in terms of what shoes clip onto what pedals, or if it's universal, or what.

Evans is always more expensive.
Try chainreactioncycles.com - generally speaking their prices are better than anyone else's
 
get flats, before SPDs.

biggest advise i was told, gettign SPDs on mountain bike 80% of time = you falling off.

first get some good flats like WELLGO MG1s which give very good grip, use them and you find them better.

if you still want that hardcore grip/performance racio for racing then get SPDs but it very hard at first to get used to them and exspencive also.

mountain bike are best used with flats.

I don't agree with that at all - while I use flats because I don't feel confident on SPD's a lot of people swear by clipless shoes/pedals on the trail and I can see why, while going over big stumps and jumps my feet can sometimes leave the pedals, leaving me frantically trying to find the pedals before I hit the floor. It's all about what you prefer - I'd highly recommend you at least give SPD's a go and see what you think, I tried to get used to them again but I just don't feel confident enough with them. Lots of top downhillers use SPD's so you can't really argue that SPD's = fall off.

tl;dr - Buy the clipless pedals & shoes and see how you get on, if you don't like them then sell them and get some decent flats like DMR V12's or Wellgo MG1's :)

With all the talk of flat pedals, are the DMR V8's a decent choice?
I only ask because everyone seems to recommend the V12's but the V8's are considerably cheaper.
 
I use V8's, heavier than the V12's but grip your feet just as well. Maybe too well, If you place your foot to far out on them you can't just slide your foot over, you have to lift your foot off the pedal.
 
Nah, neither makes much sense, Wellgo's MG1 is lighter and has a better bearing design, on a very similiar platform (Wellgo make the DMRs ;) ) They come in slightly pricier than the V8s but they're a close equivalent to the V12s. Very hard to beat... Only downer is that they're slightly softer than V8s so if you're a rock smasher, they might not last.

(I have a set of V8s, then I got the Wellgos back when they were really cheap, for my spare bike. Now the V8s are on the spare and the Wellgos are on the good bike ;) )

A lot. Frame and fork alone were £1k, so that gives you a good indicator. All told, going to be a smidge over 2k.

The wheels are Mavic XM719 rims on Hope Pro II hubs (15mm thru front, 10mm thru rear) with DT Swiss Competition double butted spokes, custom built by Merlin.

Absolutely stunning build!

I'm entertaining the idea of cycling in 16.5 miles to work tomorrow. Part of me is hoping that it's raining cats and dogs so that I can leave it to another day. I've tooled up with a spare inner tube, puncture repair kit, allen keys and a pump should I get a puncture. In fairness I don't think it's the bike breaking that I need to be worried about. I'm leaving 2 hours including time to get a shower at work. Hope I'm not late!
