Big Bike Thread

Hi there,

I have never posted in here before as im about to get back into riding again, its been about 6 years since i had my Scott bike and i want to get back into biking again.

The bike is for general road and trail use so i have my eye on a Hardtail.

Can anyone give me there opinion on this bike ? http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/Models.aspx?ModelID=33983

I have read a few reviews and it seems to come out basically on top.

On the look out for a new bike, HT in mind after today antics that saw my rear mech bust, rear mech cable and chain snap :p

Traveling along nicely, approaching a slight incline, go to change up the gears when the rear mech, chain and pedals all lock up which nearly send me over the bars.

Something got jammed. Not too sure if it was the chain, but the spring in the rear mech snapped, a link flew off the chain and the rear mech cable has pretty much snapped with only a little bit of the outer sleeving holding it on.

This is after the front brake failed recently. Heavily braking use the front brake, the lever started to go soft, no feel coming from the brake. Had to use the back one which lead to burning a bit off rubber of the rear tyre. A screw underneath the caliper had broken its seal and decided to release the brake fluid into the big wide world :p

Oh well, the bike in question is a Dawes Oxide '05. Bought it Oct '06 for £375. I cant complain, Ive covered some serious mileage on the thing. Suprised its lasted this long.

Anyway, new bike... a Rockhopper seems the way to go. Good base to build on. Is there much different between the forks on the Comp and Expert? RockShox Tora SLite vs RockShox Recon SLite? Its the frame and fork Im bothered about as the rest like brakes, rear mech, wheels etc can be upgraded later when the whole 'I want to make the bike lighter' bug catches on :p

Cheers....

Ive just realised you ride near my RAF base.

Im tempted to take my Pitch down with me this week, is Aston hill a good ride? Im in halton, its literally round the corner.

Come join us on Sunday mate - your pitch would be more than sufficient. As an added bonus, a photographer is going to be there taking some snaps for us :)

I have the 2006 GT Avalache 1.0 and the thing has been bullet proof. The wife has an Avalanche 2.0 as well as hers has also been bullet proof (in fact hers has never had a service or any parts replaced) and both have done many thousands of miles.

The 2006 model got 10/10 and the tripple triangle frame has good strength without being too heavy.

Ah man I would love to but Im not due back on base until Tuesday.

Im resting this weekend but if my pitch will be good there I think I might head ride it next weekend.

Is there any good bike shops down that way? i fancy a full face helmet and some armor at some point. wanna get a bit more agressive :)

Im getting into the idea of geting a very light single speed road bike such as a nice bianchi or fuji track bike but not sure if it's suitable for this distance. The route is very flat but has some busy traffic on some stretches. Now I'm comfortable on a roadbike but quite fancied the idea of a slick single.
Now what I getting to was..... has anyone got any experiences doing such distance of a fixie/single or any advice?

I do 20ish miles almost every day on my fixed gear. I've only really been cycling properly for just under a year, and riding fixed for 4-5 months, but have no problem with the distance. If you've never ridden fixed it will feel very strange at first, but within 2-3 days you'll be totally used to it.

Was out for a run this afternoon and about a mile from home my gears started "slipping" for want of a better word. It started as I was climbing a hill and about half way up my chain snapped and as I was out of the saddle I had a nuts/top tube interface moment.

Had to walk the last stretch home in cleats which was "interesting" to say the least.

Anyhow, it looks like one of the links has actually sheared the sideplate at one end of the actual link. So newbie question time - what do I do now?. Is a new chain the sort of thing that is easy to fit to a road bike?. Do I need any special splitting/joining tool?. Also, how do I know what chain to get, type and length wise?. It's a Pinarello FP1 with Shimano Tiagra, double compact if that's any help?

Or do I just take the easy route and drop it into my LBS and get them to do it?.

Thanks for any assistance!!

Can't beat the fresh looks of a black bike, you're not the only BMX'er here either.

Do you ever ride Rom?
