Was out for a run this afternoon and about a mile from home my gears started "slipping" for want of a better word. It started as I was climbing a hill and about half way up my chain snapped and as I was out of the saddle I had a nuts/top tube interface moment.

Had to walk the last stretch home in cleats which was "interesting" to say the least.

Anyhow, it looks like one of the links has actually sheared the sideplate at one end of the actual link. So newbie question time - what do I do now?. Is a new chain the sort of thing that is easy to fit to a road bike?. Do I need any special splitting/joining tool?. Also, how do I know what chain to get, type and length wise?. It's a Pinarello FP1 with Shimano Tiagra, double compact if that's any help?

Or do I just take the easy route and drop it into my LBS and get them to do it?.

Thanks for any assistance!!

How many miles have you done on the chain?
Your choices are repair it or buy another chain.
To see what sort it is just look on the chain, it will have the brand and model.

Cheers, bike is under a year old and I've probably done something like ( at a rough guess ) 1200-1500 miles on it. How long do they usually last?.

Thats pretty good going, replace the chain and cassette. Also check the front teeth on the front chainrings. If ok leave them

Just checked, front teeth are fine. Coming from a motorcycle background and being a relative newcomer to cycling I assume I'm looking for any sign that the front teeth on the chain rings are worn or "hooked"?.

Think I will just drop it off at my LBS and get them to replace the chain and cassette and give it a service whilst its in there, think its probably due one since it's almost 1 year old.

As long as you've maintained the chain by cleaning and lubing it then it may be possible to just repair it. Chain should last longer than that mileage wise and as long as you replace chains when they're worn you should get 3 chains to a cassette and rings.

Can't beat the fresh looks of a black bike, you're not the only BMX'er here either.

Do you ever ride Rom?

no i dont :) anyway.. the colour is not black.. its COLA cant remember the exact code.. but it looks like this when the sun hits it.. :)

I normally replace chain and cassettes together.. But personal choice really :)

Cheers guys, I'm going to grab a new chain tomorrow along with some other bits and bobs, toolwise.

What do I need then? :-

1. New chain
2. Chain splitter tool thingy.
3. Powerlink or something similar.

??.

If you buy a Shimano chain it will come with the pin to connect the chain once you've shortened it to the appropriate length. If you buy a SRAM chain it will come with the powerlink. If you need a tool, buy this:

I paid £18 each at the end of '07, great tyres and well worth the money.

Have mainly been riding my MTB this year, apart from a few sessions at Corby that is. Really need to get out on it again.
