If I may be so bold to ask:

For a mountain bike holiday what would be the most appealing?

Accomodation that is close proximity to the trails, or a slightly cheaper holiday (cheaper accomodation, food and drink) with up to an hour free transfer to the trails?

Depends on the trails. I'm used to travelling for an hour to get to different MTB trails, even in US locations like Moab, Pisgah etc.

Anyone recommend some new tyres for my Rockhopper comp?

The Fast Trak tyres that came with the bike are fine on the road, but don't seem to have much in the way of grip on loose surfaces or mud. I'd like something a little more confidence inspiring - sliding all over the place can be fun, but one day its going to go horribly wrong!

ive got Pannaracer FireXCpro 2.1 with the kevlar bead, my rear is torn to shreds (ie the treads are ripped) and the grip they offer in wet conditions is laughable, front is always washing out, i wont be getting them again.

was going to open a new thread but someone in hre can probably help.
I'm looking at buying a single speed conversion kit for my bike but not sure which type of chain will be best to use, a normal chain or half-link chain. anyone know? or does it really matter?

Thanks for the tyre advice guys. The Panaracer Rampage and Hutchinson Toros also look quite good. Is a 2.3" tyre too wide for an XC hardtail? More importantly, will a 2.3" tyre fit properly on the Rockhopper's rims? I know some of the larger tyres (maybe only downhill tyres) need wider rims to fit properly...

I'll try to get to a local shop to see what they have soon. The plan is to keep using the Fast Traks on the road - seems a waste to ruin a good set of off roas tyres on tarmac.

^^ Yeah I have a set of 2.35 Maxxis Minions and High Rollers; Super tacky fronts and 60A rears and they do sap the legs a bit ;)
The problem I have with Maxxis tyres is they come up 1 size short, so for their size they are very heavy.

My mate runs 2.7's Minions and they are the same size as my Specialized 2.3 Clutch tyres.

After 70 miler yesterday, wanted to do at least 100 miles but long week at work and night outs left with not enough energy. Managed to sneak a cheeky 30 miles in this morning hungover (I do 30 miles a day weekdays commuting, not on my Bianchi though)
