your bike looks pretty cool as it is :) Are you keeping the finishing kit as I'm not sure what will look cool with red except white? Silver maybe?

I dont know anything about those bikes, however regardless... it's going to be rubbiish for your commute. It's like asking which roadbike would be OK to go and XC with.

Care to link the 2 specs you are looking for advice on ?

Would it really be that rubbish for a commute?. I was planning sticking road tyres on it on a set of spare wheels so I could use it for both on and off road. Why are mountain bikes so rubbish at road commuting?. I realise that might be a bit of a daft question but I'm genuinely curious. I was thinking use the Pinarello for distance rides on tarmac and a hardtail MTB that I can lock out the front forks on for my commute and then off road on trails at the weekend if the fancy takes me?.

Was looking at the Cube Acid 2010 :-

The Cube LTD Comp 2010 :-

And the Cube LTD Team 2010 :-

If you were to put skinny road tires on there, you should be fine
it's nt so much the forks in my opinion, but the extra drag your tires cause

the extra weight of a MTB shouldn't be an issue and you are looking at a HT so loss of pedal power due to the bounce of a full sus wouldn't be a problem either

... just don't compare it directly to your Road bike's speed :) !
(will check those specs a bit later, on the train with the iPhone atm)

Thanks for the info, Supercow. Was speaking to a guy at change of shift this morning who uses his Marin hardtail to commute in on road tyres and he said it was fine but echo'd what you said, don't expect to compare it with road bike speeds. Especially downhill. He said he usually just freewheels downhill on steep road descents because of the gearing difference on an MTB compared with a roadie your legs end up spinning as if you were still on the granny ring if you were on the roadbike. I was thinking of going for a hybrid of some sort but I kinda want the flexibility of being able to go off road if I fancy it so I'm willing to compromise somewhat on tarmac performance.

Going to my local Cube dealer today, I'm veering towards the Acid 2010 at around the £670 mark rather than the more expensive LTD's. At my level I don't think I'll notice the difference in spec as far as day to day running goes and I can always upgrade things if the MTB bug bites me. :D

To start with just the commute on tarmac, and off road will consist of stuff like canal paths and local trails such as Carron Valley. Nothing too hard core but I'd like the option to do some more challenging off road stuff at a later date this year.

I looked at cyclocross bikes and as I already said, hybrids ( Cannondale Bad Boy was tempting ) but the hardtail just seems like I can put it to more use than either of those two types of bikes if that makes sense?. Plus I'll be getting this on the work Cyclescheme so if it doesn't work out and I don't use it off road enough I can always sell it on and not make any loss. 3 guys on my shift have all ordered Cube's and they plan on getting together regularly to go for rides and I fancy some of that!!!. :)

Draeger, just to throw a spanner in the works choice wise, what about a KHS Alite 3000?
Nice hard tail, not expensive but getting cracking reviews.

Not quite, f6 i believe it's the standard setting for when taking pictures of any light ask those on mtbr and candlepower forums. ;)

Plus it was the only way i could get a decent picture anyway otherwise the camera would adapt for the light settings, anyway sdk the light believe it or not is actually brighter in person, i actually find it a bit much and have had headaches if left on for too long, when newer led's come out i'll opt for a softer colour option as it's be far less straining and not cast shadows everywhere so ppl shouldn't fuss about their light disappearing.

Shimano discs err i think they'll be centrelock so you use a hg cassette tool to undo the spline in the middle.

Anyway just google lumen liberator, i did a thread on bike radar about it as im the resident led nut, you'll see a p7 led comparison shot plus some other folk with the same unit, a friend has a lupine betty, her light near vanished when mine came along. :D

The led's glow green when the unit it off, troutie put a couple **** of uv paint on each led so should it fly off you can still find it, it also has a lexan bottom which is great for lighting the trail underneath so you don't end up crashing into something low down unlike more traditional lights.

snip..

Strangely I was just looking at these thinking it might be a good cheap light, but looking into them they appear to cost more or less £300 for a complete setup. Where's the benefit? £300 can buy a lot of light.

Had a look at it m8, looks nice and as you say, getting great reviews. However I'm just back from my local dealer and have ordered a Cube Acid 2010 in red and white. :)

Getting a pair of Specialized Sport MTB shoes and a pair of Shimano M540 pedals to go with it as none of my roadie gear will transfer over obviously. Once my Cyclescheme voucher arrives I can pick the bike up, should be a couple of weeks. Yippee!!!!. :D

Nice looking bike the cube.
Ive just about sold all my roadie gear.
Pedal wise i went with Time Freeride Z. Decent size platform so that i can get away with just trainers to ride the bike and on downhills i dont have to clip in. Plus lots of float on Time cleats. Different way of clipping in thats taken a bit of geting used to.
Looking for some 3/4 baggys now, probably go with Altura Summit's and then some full finger gloves. My road gloves are nice but toooo warm.

Had a good day riding today.
Really starting to fall in love with my new bike.
Still a dusting of snow around tho.

Going to do my first bit of Downhill tomorrow at Stile Cop - Cannock Chase.

Any tips and wish me luck I'll probably fall off even though it's only the red run!

The Cannock DH runs are short but fun. There are several different tracks ranging from a simple red with small drops offs to full on blacks with big gap jumps and hand dug out sections

I was there yesterday and it was mostly dry - have fun :)

I have just finished adding the last new parts to both of my bikes, so now they are fully sorted for the coming year.

My Enduro SL is now running with full SRAM X0 gold finish gearing, with an e-thirteen bash & chain guide and a Hope ceramic bottom bracket.

My FSRxc has been upgraded to full SRAM X9, an 11-28 SLX Cassette, Ritchey WCS stem & bar ends (:o) , Fox RP2 shock and Conti Race King Supersonic tyres.

Fully dialed for the 2010 AM trail fun and XC races :)
