i cant believe i've never noticed this thread before, god its been ages since i've been out for a good ride on my bike, work and other commitments pretty much pushed the bike out of the window for the last couple of years

when i do get to ride i'm still beating about on the old karpiel
i just cant bare to part with her even though i rarely get near the hills these days.
YOU *******! With Gustav M's too? and you're letting it go to waste?! :\

Karpiels are the ****. As soon as I have storage space (and maybe money for one ;)) I'll be getting me an Armageddon. I take it that it's a nice ride? :p

I live in south east London, and am getting bored of the Thames Path for cycling trips. Does anyone know of anywhere apart from Oxleas woods and the green chain walk that is good?

;)unfortunatly yes it is being wasted sitting there:(

and yes she is an absolutley wonderful ride, rides a lot lighter than you'd imagine, very chuckable, really smooth you really feel you can just plow through everything, its just so adaptable though, so much adjustment, i have it setup at 9" travel at the moment, but with the second shock in place it can go up to 13"

i'm looking at making a return to biking in my free time, especially with the days getting longer again, but i think i'll invest in some beater of a XC bike to build the fitness level a bit.

Right guys, got a bit of a dilema. I want a new bike and been looking around. I got a £1000 Budget, MAX not going over it. However went into local bike shop and found a Specialized FSR XC M4. Good spec, light weight etc. Lock out on it, hayes hydraulics and loads of other bits. Is it worth the £900 price tag? He said he will throw in a pair of SPDs and Shoes to go with.. So shall i go with it?

Its the FSRxc Disc model.

I would look for a similarly spec'd bike with V brakes, you should get better drivetrain and that instead of hydraulic brakes.

I REALLY dont get on with hayes soles. They just get on my nerves.

Its all LX and deore. I had a ride of a Mongoose, Giant and GT. Mongoose and Giant were HEAVY and poor spec for the price. The GT has iDrive.... a box of bombs!

The gearing is all fine and the forks are good enough but i just hate the brakes. They should be fine if your just doing a lil bit of Xc though.

If you dont get on with them you could always jsut by some hfx9s or jucy 3s or something.

I hated the Hayes Sole brakes too. They are fine as long as you dont want to go down a slight gradient and brake. I wouldn't go as far as V's though. Perhaps upgrade the brakes instead of getting the shoes and SPD's?

Problem with Soles is they're only semi-hydraulic, one side of the caliper moves and the other one comes into contact with the disc eventually. It works, just not particularly well.

You can pick up a decent set of hydraulics for less than £150 these days, well worth the investment if you ride a lot.

Bought the Specialized. Had a free lid and two rear shock protectors (one of rmy mate). So a bargin was had. Lovely bike. Im in love with it. Here are a quick few snaps.

Any comments? :)

Been meaning to post this up for a while, this picture isnt that recent and the bike is a bit muddy from cycling along the Innocent Railway in the rain. Also got a different front wheel now after some neds stole it when it was in my stairwell. Still, on the bright side it was an upgrade opportunity :D
