Big Sony PS3 announcment coming 31st March?

While i agree that it probably won't be backwards compatibility i wouldn't be shocked if sony were working on software emulation for the PS2. Reason for this being they can then use that software, or slightly modified versions of it, in their future consoles much like they have for PS1 emulation in the PSP and PS3.

Nokia did and it bombed twice, people want a phone first then basic java games.

Have you accidentally quoted the wrong post or have you tied your comment to my post in a way i don't understand?

In his mind I am sure what he says makes sense. I have read it 5 times and I cannot think how it makes sense, no matter which post he quoted.

i think he is kind of referring to the comment (not one he quoted) about the PSP2 and comparison with iphone and DS. Using the Ngage as a reason why the psp2 would fail .... maybe

Ah I see. The one thing I know won't be announced (considering everywhere is billing this as a PS3 related announcement) is that it will not be a PSP (2) release/upgrade etc.

For a start handhelds like this always get released in Japan first so it would not be a worldwide announcement.

The way I read it was that Nokia game phones like the N-Gage failed because thier primary focus was implementing games and lacked in what people needed the most out of the device, a mobile phone. Either way it doesnt really make sense.

I also recall last year the BBC (I know not the greatest gaming source LOL) had multiple blog entries where they talked a bout a Sony exclusive of some sort they had seen and were NDA'd on. For a while after every major games announcement BBC would say "that's not it" etc.

Dunno what ever happened to that, BBC obviously saw something they were not allowed to release details on, just don't know if this could be it, or whether that thing has been revealed and was not such a big deal as BBC made out?

First discussed here as a 2009 game

bbc blog said:
So what else was I shown? Well, I was shown a trailer for a game not due out till 2009 but was sworn to absolute secrecy. Apparently, Sony just wanted to give a glimpse of what the console will be capable of.
In fact, the game is such a secret that when I mentioned the game to Phil Harrison last week he was unsure at first whether even to admit the title existed. When I explained I had been shown it under strict Non Disclosure Agreement terms he looked relieved.
I don't mean to be a tease - all I can say is that I was left speechless. If the footage I was shown truly is "in game", as told to me by the Sony PR people, then we could be on the brink of a step change in what games consoles are capable of in terms of story-telling and immersion.
And there I'll leave it. Feel free to speculate on what I was shown. I cannot, of course, confirm or deny what it was....

I can't see it being anything to do with backwards compatibility personally, it just seems like they'd be spending time and money developing something that isn't actually going to earn them money in return. Don't get me wrong, it'd be awesome to be able to play PS2 games on my PS3, but from a business standpoint I can't see it being profitable.

:p

Chill guys! ;)

Completely forgot about that one RP2000, hope it is actually a secret title and he's not just blowing smoke about something like heavy rain. Would be nice for Sony to release a title a few months after it's announced too; no more of this 'hey check out this awesome game you can have in two years'

How about charging for downloadable PS2 classics to play on your PS3 like what happens with PS1 games already. Theres your business stand point.

That is my first thought. A UMD-less PSP2 with camera, phone, etc etc. Sony's take on the iPhone if you will seeing as Ericsson want to quit the shared business. This will take on both the iPhone and the DSi by having the best of both.

*holds out pinch of salt*

My views:

1. Unlikey to be a game or hardware announcement.
Why not do this at E3 or at recent shows these are also world wide stages with maximium penetration for news and launches.

2. Giving the timing of 31st March and the new business year starting in April id assume its money involved and possibly price cuts.

3. Could be PSP Involved and likely a price reduction as with DSi being launched in April its a common tactic or spoiler.

4. Expect PS3 to get a price cut later maybe, E3 perhaps.

True, but I just don't know how popular it'd be and how much they'd have to charge to actually profit. The PS games already available are a bit different; the emulation was evidently easy to include with the PS3 and seeing as neither the PS or the games are still for sale, they're not undermining any of their other products by selling PS games cheaply on there. Providing download-only PS2 games would mean they'd have to be priced to be enough to offset the cost of developing the emulation.

Sony dropped the backwards compatibility for cost reasons, so I have a hard time believing that they'd bring it back again. Presumably they haven't lost many sales due to the lack of BC; it's more of an added extra than a vital component, for most people.
