@ bacon, should still be a lot of fun to ride though? considering my last bike only had 50bhp :P?

yeah its a fantastic bike mate, handles like a dream, i guess the weight and very forward biased position is the reason these bikes are so well known for their front ends and stability. The suspension is also really good for the road, the zx6r b1h rear shock was too hard hard and left my arse in the air above the seat on bumpy roads. Where as the 7r is very solid on the road at speed.

If you want some info on zx7r's I advise to go look at www.redmonkey.com/7r for the owners forum!

and http://homepage.ntlworld.com/webzxr/zxr750r/ for tips on tuning, setting up and mods etc for the bike

You can pick up a nice 7r for around £1500, defo worth a go, in my opinion they are fantastic looking bikes as well, one of the main reasons i was drawn to it over an older zx6r or srad.

I cant wait to get it on track

bit of an update, went out and bought one today, W reg (2000) with 4,674 genuine miles on the clock near mint condition for £2,255 literally had the mot yesterday :) very pleased cant wait to pick it up tommorrow

also I havent seen any 'nice' zxr7s for £1500 :P Ive seen real nails for £1500

tyres are old but it has been kept on stands and the tyres deflated, just had an oil change, and nothing really needs doing at all apart from some slight blistering on the front right fork meaning Im going to have to get a new set of forks or get them re chromed at some point, apart from that its as you would expect from a sub 5k mile bike pretty nice! :D

its black and yellow, I didnt want to go for the standard green and white as I didnt really like the purple most of them had on them

thats the bike I bought

Nice bikes in this thread guys. Here's a pic of me at Oulton Park this week.

nice bike, fairly pricy, but i guess for a 5k example it wasnt guna be cheap :)

I paid £1400 for mine, regged in 99, but a p3 (late reg) 16.5k, scorp can great nick in december. Seen plenty on ebay going for around £1500 hence the advice on price!

But yeah man, enjoy, they are great bikes and check out the sites i linked, you will get info on there for speeding up steering, setting up the slipper clutch (i need 3 x 2mm steel plates and some medium springs for mine), suspension settings, float bowl mod (need to do) etc

When do you pick it up???

Was out for a blast last night. had one of those woopsee there go the police and I'm going slightly way to fast moments. great run about 6 of us out.

Im really tempted to buy a NC35... They just look so damn sexy!

I was tempted to go slap one on my credit card the other week. purely for the track.

Mates selling a nice little example for £900

he was doing better times round knockhill in the wet than some of the 600's

My mistake mates got an NC30 which is the VFR not the RVF

Going to see a ZX6R tomorrow, G1 model so 1998.. got 29K Miles on the clock (Bit too much?) in nice red colours. Its going for £1895.. bit steep for a bike with that kind of milage on. Whatre peoples thoughts on these bikes? Only really have £1600-£1700 to spend to replace my ZXR400, so is there anything else i can look at in the price range?

Also, what should i look out for when im going to see the bike? Obviously need to check its not a ringer and such, but what else?

very over priced, guessing garage? mate of mine picked up a 636 A1p on ebay (2002 model) for £1900 2 weeks ago

Shop about, for a G1 id be looking to spend around £1400 private

edit: as for other bikes in your price range

zx6r J models
cbr600
thundercat
R6
SRAD gsxrs
zx7r
zx9r

plenty of choice out there :)

edit 2:
*when looking at it, inspect it for crash damage, listen to see if the engine sounds right, a loud rattle around 5-6k rpm means cct needs attention (either freeing up or replacing, £45-£50 for a new one and a bit of time replacing)
*Check the consumables, chain/sprockets, tyres, pads etc
*Check the service history, if its been maintained by the owner check its got reciepts etc to prove it. *Check its had its major service (which includes valve clearances etc) carried out, usually around 16k miles, it will also be due another major service at 32k miles (for that bike it is in the very near future) which at a garage these can cost around £400 unless you do it yourself
*Check condition of things lke fork stanchions to see if they are pitted, and if there is any oil around the seal if you hold the front brake and pump the suspension. Check the head bearings arent shot either from wheelies etc
*Look to see if the downpipes have rotted away or not, these cost about £180 to replace with stainless ones and are a good indication if the bike has been used in all weather.
*Overall condition as well, as that will be a pointer if the bike has been looked after or not, dont just go by shiny paintwork as the dealer will be great at making them shiny!

As others have said mate, that is very over priced, I would walk unless he cna knock at least £500 off it. Also with that milage you need to make sure it has been serviced regulary. The early ZX6R engines are very strong if well looked after, I had a 96 as my first bike, bought it with 6k on, racked up nearly 30k on it. I used to drop the oil every 4k and look after it well though. Engine was still strong when I gave it away to my brother.

There are quite a few things with the early ninjas you need to watch out for though mate.

  • Frames are made of cheese, espeacally around the headstock, slightest knock will twist the frame, look for signs of damage, creasing etc.
  • Brakes will seize and be useless if not regulary serviced, seal kits aint cheap so have a good look and make sure they move freely and arnt a mess.
  • Rear shock can loose damping after a couple years, if its still got its original shock then it will need a service, check by pushing down on the rear and making sure it doesnt bounce.
  • Front downpipes are made of terrible metal that falls to pieces if not cleaned all the time. check to make sure they dont blow, a lot will have stainless replacements.
  • They do tend to corrode quite easily as well if they are used all year round, give it the once over for corrosion. Once I took mine in and the swingarm bolt was seized solid, cost a bloody fortune to drill out and fix.

Dont let that look put you off though, they are a great bike that handle well with a strong engine, they also have the most fantastic air induction roar when gunning it. I had mine for 4 years. amazing bike.

Thanks for the great posts everyone.. Im quite unsure now of wether to get one or not. Im after something a bit more reliable than the ZXR400 as that bike as set me back a lot of cash hence wanting to get rid.

Ill go see it anyway and see how much he is willing to knock off the price and also have a look at a hornet he has for sale too. £2100 but 16k miles.

I think hornets are under rated. pal has just taken ownership of one.

As you can see below it is the one painted like a hornet LOL

From last night at St Andrews. The Blade top left lost its plate doing about 80 I was the lucky one behind it. Hit the tyre and came at me like a missile. held on in that pic with cable ties LOL
