Black Mesa Source

There is, but it doesn't work as above. It still cycles through the weapons, but removes the need for the 'click to select' part.

I suppose like most, I just hot key a couple of primary weapons and use the mouse wheel...I did have problems with the weapons switching by itself part way through a clip sometimes ! very annoying, was that your thoughts for going direct selection ?

Still though, you can't make that jump...

I did it another way anyway D:

Yes I also did the little backtrack, I think this is good that the game is not totally scripted !

I'm still smiling about the guy who beat the dead security guard across the room with the crowbar to the "eye scanner"...totally logically really :D

I guess I'm just too used to the HL2-style controls, where you don't need to think about what weapon you have currently selected :p

I like to switch quickly from one weapon to another based on the tactical situation. For example, say a bunch of houndeyes are running at me: I like to unload a clip of SMG ammo, then switch to the shotgun as soon as the clip is dry. My brain thinks *shotty is second in the 3-group*, so I go "3, 3, click", and end up with the crossbow instead of the shotgun. My brain doesn't seem to take into account that I'm already using a "3-group" weapon, and so need to adjust the cycle accordingly (i.e. only "3, click" in this case).

Given a second I can always get the selection right - but often a second is too long. I go on instinct with these things, and my instincts are tuned for HL2!

Did anyone work out how to do the save games so we can go back to any level ?

All saves seem to be in the save game folder but only the last few selectable in the games play menu. I see also not all saves have thumbnails in the save folder also ?

Just for the sake of debate, does anyone have any negative points, either with Black Mesa or Half-life in general?

I know people won’t like me saying this but I think the combat is showing its age. I mean, it’s quite simplistic, for example, you can’t really play sneakily or anything. The only choice you have to make is what weapon to have ready when an enemy appears. Often it’s just a case of waiting to until the soldier or whatever come round a corner then blast em, or maybe set up a trip mine, but that’s about it. It’s really a limitation of the A.I.

I’m also not really a fan of the health and load/save system. This is more of a personal problem though. I’m quite pedantic, so whenever I play a section and lose quite a bit of health I always quick load it and try it again a different way :p There is some fun in that I suppose, but I’d really like to be forced into flowing with the game more. I also can’t let any ammo or health packs escape, so I’m constantly rooting around for them. It’s a flaw of mine really, rather than the game but I do think other games handle the health system better.

Are you suggesting... regenerating health?!

Blasphemy!

These older games with quick save and health packs are more fun to play because they are hard. regenerating health just gives you zero sense of self preservation and you just stick your head out until your nearly dead, duck down and reload and regenerate... waste of time.

Looking for health and powerups is part of the game and we all go back for health or replay a section when we come out badly from a battle.

I recall a series called Project IGI, now you want a real challenge try that !
IIRC the first had no saves and next to no health, could take a couple of evenings to get through one level.

For me Gameplay>physics>graphics

Probably the hardest PC game I've ever played.

I recall, A friend and myself spent an afternoon/evening trying to finish the last level and I think the only time in my life I used a cheat, "god mode" was needed for the very last bit....don't recall that helping much as you had to protect someone while doing other things.
No saves, you died and started from the beginning of the level  very tough game !
