Black Myth: Wukong

I actually find this far harder than Elden Ring, I just cannot seem to time my dodges right and some of the bosses have some really ludicrous attack moves. Whereas I 100%'d Elden Ring on multiple characters I'm really struggling to get too far into this one. As it stands at the moment I much prefer Elden Ring

I'm also encountering that thing some other people have mentioned where you press to heal and it doesnt respond and you have to press to heal again, I also get that on the heavy attack sometimes, I press to build up a heavy attack and it just doesnt seem to accept that I've pressed the heavy and I have to press it again, the graphics are better than FromSoftwares stuff but Fromsoftwars controls are more responsive. With all the titles coming this month (Age of Mythology, Space Marine 2, Satisfactory 1.0, God of War Ragnarok) I'll probably shelve this game for now and come back to it later in the year

Very interesting. I am enjoying this, despite hating everything about souls games. For me this game is very fluid and responsive. It does not punish if you are a millimeter pointing in the wrong direction when you commit to an attack. If From Software games were more like this - nimble and agile combat, with little back tracking for resources, and dont require you killing 50 enemies on the way to the boss you've tried 50 times - I would be all in on them.

Currently at the boss after whiteclad. I dont recall his name. Stopped off to do wight mark 2 on the way. Enough for tonight tho.

Yeah I'm sure that I will click more with Wukong if I put more time into it, its just that its come at an unfortunate time as almost all of my gaming time in September will go on Age of Mythology, Space Marine 2, Satisfactory, God of War 2 and Cities 2, so at the moment, with that lot going on I just havent got the impetus at this time to perservere with it. I'll come back to it the next time theres a lull in the gaming release schedule but just too filled up currently :)

OK NVM, I think i've cracked it, maybe. I thought the "see through the enemy" part would be more of a visual thing but I think it just means you'll hit a heavy attack that's more likely to stagger and maybe your less vulnerable to attacks whilst doing it?

I'm pretty sure I'm doing it as I was able to do the follow up attack skyfall attack.

You use the heavy attack during an attack animation from the enemy - and yes, it does make you temporarily invincible plus there is a brief visual clue with Monkey glowing red.

Got up to Tiger Vanguard. Was not expecting martial arts :D

Sometimes I get a boss first time, sometimes I almost get them first time. Then next attempts are absolutely miserable for a while. But it's a hell of a lot of fun. I was starting to get worried about variety when i saw the lightning frog and elder jinzi, but it's not going full copy pasta.

Also the story I have no idea and that was fine til the cartoon cut scene at end of chapter 1. Kinda feels like I should know more than I do. But I'm not reading that book

Agree on the story; I’ve got no idea what’s happening. But then that was the same with Elden Ring and that never really bothered me; in the end I just read a Reddit post summarising the lore and what the hell id just spent 200 hours doing :)

Completed Elden ring last month in 50 hours which apparently is quite quick. How does this compare, what annoyed me about Elden ring was the horse made you cheese any boss on the map. And a Dex build made easy work through the game, is this similar in you can do your own build.

I'd say it offers about the same level of challenge as Elden Ring, but minus any "cheese" strategies. There is quite a bit of character customisation, and the game allows you to respec for free to try different skills/abilities. I haven't finished the game yet ( starting Chapter 5 ... there are 6 total ) and I'm about 30 hours in. There are a few bosses that could definitely do with some re-tuning ( Chapter 2 & 4 end bosses) but most are challenging but fair.

This is coming from the perspective of someone with older reactions and fingers. I'm closing in on the end game.

I noped out of Elden Ring after about 40 hours at the point where you hit the scorched looking land. Didn't read any guides or try optimizing the build.

Wukong is uneven as far as difficulty goes. The mobs are easy enough and seem to exist for farming. Some of the mini bosses can be more or less dealt with by mashing x. Some will ruin your day if you don't manage to time a dodge. The big bosses are also uneven but to a higher level. There are high level items that give big and boss specific advantages but they're hidden in secret areas that you probably won't find without a walkthrough. Not finding stuff is flagged.

If there's a challenge then there's a respawn point less than a minute away. You lose nothing for failing. You can respec at the spawn point without penalty. Stuff for crafting buffs is common if you're an explorer. Making sense of the skill tree and pulling off specials will make it easier. I've not found a way to cheese things.

I've enjoyed my time with it but I'm already invested in the myth. When I hit a roadblock I turn on the trainer and 2x my damage output. That and a bit of experimenting has got me through. My gud days were about at the launch of Quake 2. If you have skillz you'll probably find it a rewarding experiance.

I dropped the wandering wight yesterday but not sure if picked up the purple mist thing he dropped as it was still there on ground when I left the area. I think I did though. The wolf boss I thought afterwards I found much easier I dropped it after 2 goes. With wolfie and wight it helped I had the could morph into the guy with the flaming staff as I find him before the other 2.

You can retrieve spirits if you forget to retrieve them from the shrine once you have the ability to catch spirits.

The Pagoda area is doing my head in. The unexplained health mechanic is just so arbitrary and adds nothing to the gameplay or challenge. On the contrary, it just feels pointless to continue on while it's going on, so you just sit there and wait it out, literally not playing the game for the minute or so it's active. Terribly designed part in an otherwise enjoyable game so far.

Yerr had no idea what was going on, must have missed the bit that explained it?

Honestly, I'm finding the presentation of the story and all the in-between bits very lacking. Things just happen, characters just appear with little-to-no build up or back story. Great if you're familar with Journey to the West, but if you're not, it all feels a bit disjointed. Like before I got to this Pagoda bit, I was exploring a snow area, then suddenly I'm transformed into a bird and fly miles away to fight some other boss? It's making me feel a bit apathetic to anything that's happening story-wise, which is a bit of a shame.

I'm on the 3rd area now and not sure if I might park this up for a bit.

That last boss on level two took me most of yesterday to defeat and I only just got him in the end. The bits in between are brilliant.
