Black Myth: Wukong

Honestly, I'm finding the presentation of the story and all the in-between bits very lacking. Things just happen, characters just appear with little-to-no build up or back story. Great if you're familar with Journey to the West, but if you're not, it all feels a bit disjointed. Like before I got to this Pagoda bit, I was exploring a snow area, then suddenly I'm transformed into a bird and fly miles away to fight some other boss? It's making me feel a bit apathetic to anything that's happening story-wise, which is a bit of a shame.

Agreed. It's getting worse and it's affecting my enjoyment. I bounced off yellow wind sage a lot, then went looking for other things to do. Followed the warthog mission only to end up in the middle of the desert with the yellow wind sage on my side? What. No explanations to connect the dots.

Just finished the game, and all I can say is the difficulty of the final bosses in Chapter 6 is up there with Consort Radahn from Elden Ring / Shadow of the Erdtree. In fact, the difficulty is so obscene ( with some seriously sadistic design choices by the devs eg. boss stealing your gourd when trying to heal ), to the point of being unfun, I'm going to have to dock a point or two from my overall rating which prevents this from being my GOTY. It's still a very good game though with some minor technical/performance issues ( could be worse than I experienced ... playing on a 7800X3D with 4090 ).

I had to laugh at the end ... game says now for new game plus mode where the challenges ahead are substantially harder. Err, no thanks. The base game was challenging enough, thanks !

That last boss on level two took me most of yesterday to defeat and I only just got him in the end. The bits in between are brilliant.

Your last statement describes the entire game in a nutshell. Near 90% of the game is fun, and very well executed, But some of the bosses are sadistic, and you need to kill them to progress ( ch 2, 4, 6 in particular ) which could lock quite a few players out from finishing the game.

Indeed, it seems somewhat unfair that progression is gated behind defeating an extremely challenging boss.

The game wasn't marketed as being similar to Elden Ring, and some of my friends are displeased that I recommended it to them initially :(

To be fair a lot of "influencers" on YouTube are saying the same ie. game is easy, nothing like Elden Ring in terms of difficulty etc blah, blah, blah. It's clear most of them haven't reached the end of the game, otherwise they'd have a different opinion. According to Steam approx. 20% have beaten the final boss and I would wager many of those did that with the unlimited mana bug that was patched a couple of days ago.

If I was to describe the game to someone now, I would say it's similar to God of War but with difficulty spikes that are equivalent to, or even exceed, Elden Ring / Souls games. And some of those diffcult bosses are NOT optional.

This makes me worried as I'm a short way through Chapter 2 and enjoying it so far, but probably not enough to spend hours getting past a boss. It's also the kind of game that once I put it down, I'm probably not picking up again.

Keep at it until you reach the final boss in chapter 2 before deciding on continuing / quitting whilst you're ahead. If you find him nigh impossible, then be warned that the end of chapters 4, 6 ( and possibly 5 ) are even harder. Everything else inbetween is straightforward or optional. And I suppose that's the issue with this game ; it lulls you into thinking it's only mildly challenging. I do wonder if the devs might downgrade some of the bosses after the game has been out for several weeks and more feedback / telemetry is available.

Yeah definitely I’ll keep at it. I’ve enjoyed the bosses so far.

I was having a good time then I come up against the white clad noble and thought I'd beaten him and not so bad. Then he got back up and turned into a snake! No fair. As for the end, is there no such thing as cheats anymore? I can't be bothered with unbeatable bosses and will want to finish the game.

Just need to be patient and learn some of his moves to help dodge. Also staff stance is good against this guy.

You can always track back and get a few more levels before attempting again

To be fair the final boss fight is a bit more forgiving in comparison to FromSoft design, they would make you do all 4 phases again if you die, keep your remaining item + mana usage per fight instead of replenish it after reaching phase 3.
I would definitely recommend to at least try the post game stuff by getting the "secret" ending if you have completed the dragon quest.

That's true ... what a nightmare that would be doing all 4 phases from scratch. But there is a still a level of BS that even FromSoft don't engage in eg. the stealing of your gourd/heal. I managed to engage with all the secret areas / ending ... some of the best content in the game but bizarre some if it is hidden away as certain items are almost essential.

Him stealing the gourd is a very Sun Wukong thing to do, another thing would be one of his grapple combo, where at the end he kicks your staff back and does the hand gesture "come on". He is cocky and loves a good fight which is all part of his character.

I agree, it's in character ... and it's amusing the first time they occur. But given the difficulty of the encounter it's going to rub a lot of people up the wrong way.

For sure yeah but..its still a fun fight regardless of it being a challenge.
The challenge to fun level for me is bang in the middle.
I've started a new game+ and i'm already in chapter 3, breezing through all the bosses now with my attempt to 100% the achievements.

That's usually what happens to me and games. Hundreds of pounds wasted on unfinished games.

There's been a few I've managed to come back to, but recently I've had Starfield which I only got about 10 hours into, and BG3 & Cyberpunk that I can't be far off finishing. Cyberpunk I think I willm Starfield I need some convincing to bother.

2nd chapter boss isn’t that bad tbh. I nearly beat him 1st try. Not a boast!
Obvs second time I died almost instantly, as is the way :p got him 4th time. You just have to throw everything at him. You won’t win with just attacks.
There’s a thing you can get, don’t know what it’s called, think it’s top middle on the inventory screen, that you can use (R2 + L3) to completely nullify his windy stuff. in the item descriptions of that item slot - “works v well against certain enemies” … something like that
