BMW and M Power Owners

This isn't eco pro coasting. So that's this mystery solved :p That's just the standard behaviour in eco pro mode.

The coasting mode disengages the gearbox and drops Revs to idle like coasting in a manual. Consequently there is no charging mode whilst it happens.

Right, so when the eco pro dial just centres to the middle then? Mine did that too sometimes, but not as often. The satnav screen would often show this...

Cheltenham? That's BMW Europes new "Exemplar" Dealership, the largest in Europe apparently

That's my local dealership, the old one in Cheltenham is where I bought my F10 from so I'll be using it for servicing etc. I've driven past it a few times and it is absolutely massive, probably the biggest showroom I've seen.

Thereby using fuel. Is this meant to be economical :) What's the purpose?

Coasting has less rolling resistance so the car goes further than if left in gear, I guess some BMW boffin worked out that distance vs fuel used was beneficial enough to program it in.

Not sure I want/can be bothered about coding it in with the car being under warranty.

The satnav screen never shows that during normal driving once you are in eco pro mode. There are no indications that coasting is taking place on the nav screen, that's just a settings menu.

Feels like this is going to be another xs2man story changing saga, you gave it away when you said you had the charge icon appearing :p

What on earth does the battery/charge area mean?

Also does 45-48 MPG seem reasonable for sitting at 75?

I get 40 MPG if I go faster, like 85 etc. 30 MPG around town.

It means the alternator is charging the battery.

45-48 is reasonable depending on weather etc. In good conditions mine will just tip over 50ish.

Is that with cruise set to 75? I've not seen over 48 so far, but my morning commute has 10 minutes of going up Birdlip hill which kills the economy!

You can have that screen on during normal driving. Pretty sure it was one of the options, as it changes depending on if you are accelerating or off the pedal, showing you if your charging, coasting, or neither IIRC.

I always found on cruise I couldn't get 50mpg in my 530d. I had to drive off cruise, and only had it a couple times when having the phone hooked up to the car, with the phone app tracking it.

You can have that screen when driving ,it's available under vehicle information > efficient dynamics , in a LCI F31 335d I have just now it will show the coasting icon when coasting also does animation telling you to lift off etc

Going to try it on the way home :p

He still appears to have had the only 2013 530d in the world which has coasting enabled from the factory though..

That's what a 335d does to get over 50 you need to slow down to 70, I got 55mpg on 800mile round trip.

You need to have it full screen to get all the information.

I want coasting. Guess my DCT and monstrous V8 would make it pretty pointless.

Love how the crappy 120d car I had a few weeks back had power meters but mine don't work (when coded). Lame-o

I find the quicker you get up that hill, the better your MPG...:p
I go up at half 6 most mornings, I really wish I could go faster than the 50 most people seem to want to sit at. It's also yet another classic example of I'm going right so everyone sits in the right lane even though the left lane is clear and it's clearly signposted that both lanes go right. Then people seem confused when they try and cut across but there's cars there!

Need some advice on how to silence a rather noisy vacuum pump. I've ordered some new o rings for it to see if it's a minor leak and I'll give it a damn good cleaning out when I replace them. Apart from that, anything else I could try?

My 330e does this and they call it 'sailing' instead (could be a US term). I assumed all other eco-pro + stop start cars did it, why wouldn't they?
Perhaps as without the engine running there isn't enough power for the brake servo, power steering and other electrically powered gubbins that the 330e has vastly larger power reserves to power.

The principle of having a car that can drive without the engine starting changes things quite drastically - ie a 300V tractive motor. Thngs like brake assistance are moving away from vaccum assistance due to the partial engine running events that PHEV offers like the 330e. A regular engine car typically uses conventional servo assistance so for sailing you would atleast want a vaccum pump to maintain servo assitance with engine off. EPAS already has fixed the steering assistance issues of the 1990's of turning engines off.
