BMW and M Power Owners

I've always ran 95 fuel on my 04 3.0i Z4 for the two years i've owned it without any issues feels smooth etc.

Read some info from googling that the M54B30 engine was designed to run 98? Would I benefit if I switched to BP Ultimate or whatever shell sells?

So my lease ended on my 1.6 TDI A3 a week ago so I went out and bought a 2011 520D Touring. I'm absolutely over the moon with it. It's a stupid amount of car for the money I paid. I'll try and find a quiet spot I can grab some pictures in.

I have got some grief for buying an estate car at the age of 24 but I love them.

640d at 40k.
..and you went for the £250 excess?

TBH my reasoning is that I'd buy the policy to cover a potentially wallet-busting and mental bill that could arise from a serious issue costing multiple thousands. Were that to happen, the £250 excess is a small price to pay. I suppose where the £250 excess is a bit steep is when its the "smaller" cost things (in BMW speak that is) like door handles for comfort access etc going wrong where the £250 excess is a significant chunk of the total cost of the repair. However, I am well aware there are not many things in 5-series and upwards land that cost much less than a grand to fix....

I think £100 is the best combination - I worked out that unless you do not claim at all in the year the £250 excess does not work out cheaper. I don't want to have to think about whether its worth booking in at the dealer if something goes wrong - which with a £250 excess you might do if you think maybe an indy can do it for £200 etc etc blah blah.

The policy is so expensive it either needs to provide total coverage for everything my car might need or it isnt worth the bother. A £250 excess endangers this.

It could well be but running the numbers off the top of my head it was £1100 with 0 excess,- £850 with £100 excess and £600 with £250 excess.

So I can make 1 claim and it still comes in at less than it would with the £100 excess. A lot of the cheaper/easier jobs where the part costs less than £100 I can do myself which I do appreciate completely defeats the point of the warranty but for me it's there in case something like the HUD craps out or part of the drivetrain goes pop.

Wheel bearings are a prime example - a relatively quick and simple job where I can buy the part for a very reasonable price and do the job which is something I enjoy. I totally get if you don't enjoy doing it it's well worth paying £100.

Plus tbh - I know plenty of people who will spend £250.00 on a weekend getting hammered. I'd rather pay it as an excess for BMW to fix my car :D

Much ass grassy ass, mi amigo.

Spec is epic! Biggest and first thing you notice is the 4 wheel steering, such a strange sensation.

^^^meant to say as per a few prior posts that my 535D is about to expire its New Car Warranty at the end of November. Normally I get rid at that stage but in this case I am keeping the car - which is very high spec and low mileage still - and getting the BMW extended warranty. Having looked around at other options, BMW and elsewhere, nothing else floats my boat at all. It would cost ten grand at least to beat the spec, build and performance just to have something "new". Not worth it. A great car is the 535D.

Right, I’ve owned my 640d GC for a couple of months now and there are a few things that gets right on my nerves about the car. I’m thinking as it’s my first BMW (probably last) it’s probably because I’m not familiar with it and there’s probably a way to sort these stupid things out so hopefully some of you guys know how to sort these things out.

1) Is there a way to stop the sun blind on the sun roof from partially closing when locking the car and folding the mirrors in?
2) Is there a way to stop auto wipers resetting to off every time the car is turned off?
3) Is there a way to stop auto high beam resetting to off every time the car is turned off?
4) What is the point of having climate control with that stupid POS jockey wheel between the vents overriding the climate?

1 don't hold the lock button for as long or manually close the mirrors first so you don't have to hold it at all.
2 nope
3 nope
4 the wheel doesn't override it. It allows for fine tuning of the driver and passenger face vents.

3) Is there a way to stop auto high beam resetting to off every time the car is turned off?

Yes, this can be enabled through coding.

Because it's not a stupid POS wheel at all, its probably one of the best features in the entire car. If you leave it set to dead centre the system works exactly like any other climate system. However you have the ability to vary the front vent temperature independently of the climate setting, so if you want a quick blast of cold or hot air you can have that without having to adjust the set temperature. It's absolutely great and I miss it every single time I drive a car without it.

Absolutely. Disgustingly, some new BMWs (like an X1 I went in) didn't have it at all. The horror!!!

BMW Online question.

Is it worth paying the annual subscription for my sim to be activated or do I get the same functionality using my phones Bluetooth tether?

Can I browse the Internet? Will I have real time traffic for the sat nav?

Edit: oh, can I connect my android to the I'd rive and use the apps or something like that now? Wow, feels like I'm in the future haha!

Thanks

You'll get real time traffic if your car was built after September 2011. Older ones don't have it. You can only browse the internet if your car has the internet option but it's crap.

Thanks, I didn’t realise if you set it in the middle it works as climate should. That said, I genuinely don’t see the point of the wheel, I set the climate to the temperature I find the most comfortable and that’s it, it never gets touched again unless the season changes. It is always the perfect temperature as I like it, why do I need a wheel to make it go hot or cold?

Just ignore the wheel, i have never used it once on any of the BMWs i have had over the years. Like you its not something which crosses my mind as being remotely useful. There is no need to be annoyed by it though, just ignore it if you dont wish to use it.

The wiper thing drives me crazy too on BMWs, i wonder if that is codeable too like the lights, as Fox mentions?
