BMW and M Power Owners

Just ignore the wheel, i have never used it once on any of the BMWs i have had over the years. Like you its not something which crosses my mind as being remotely useful. There is no need to be annoyed by it though, just ignore it if you dont wish to use it.

The wiper thing drives me crazy too on BMWs, i wonder if that is codeable too like the lights, as Fox mentions?

Haha it was only annoying as I didn’t realise if you set it in the middle it acts as normal climate. I didn’t even realise it was there to begin with (which caused the annoyance) it was set to hot and I couldn’t ever get the climate to get cold enough even though I had the climate as low as I could get it. When I realised and switched it to cold it was fine. When I went to work in the morning, it was quite chilly, so I set the climate to 21 but it felt cold constantly until I realised I had the wheel set to cold....

A little over a month with the E39 and I'm, err, not jelling with it so to speak. It clearly was a fantastic motor back in the day, but jumping into it on a daily basis is making me feel like I'm warping back in time. Needless to say, I sorely miss the modern comforts of an F series BMW.

There's a few niggly issues (nothing mechanical) which I should sort out but I had the opportunity to jump into my brothers F31 320d whilst his was in for repair and I've convinced myself I want one. I'm planning more European trips after I drove to Paris in August (and absolutely loved it), so despite being averse to diesels in the past I could possibly make a case for one.

What do you guys make of this?

Seems to have high miles for the year (being a Jan 2017 car!), but the price seems great considering it would've been what, £40k plus new? I've negotiated £1k off the price already with the dealership.

Right, I’ve owned my 640d GC for a couple of months now and there are a few things that gets right on my nerves about the car. I’m thinking as it’s my first BMW (probably last) it’s probably because I’m not familiar with it and there’s probably a way to sort these stupid things out so hopefully some of you guys know how to sort these things out.

1) Is there a way to stop the sun blind on the sun roof from partially closing when locking the car and folding the mirrors in?
2) Is there a way to stop auto wipers resetting to off every time the car is turned off?
3) Is there a way to stop auto high beam resetting to off every time the car is turned off?
4) What is the point of having climate control with that stupid POS jockey wheel between the vents overriding the climate?

The wiper setting is to stop the wipers deciding that they need to auto switch on when the screen isn't in a condition where the wipers should be operating, it could be dirty but dry or there is a nice covering of frost and the wipers are frozen at the base. BMW aren't the only car manufacturer that switch the auto-wipers off each time it is restarted.

You could potentially buy a slightly older 330d? Loads on there and a much nicer engine..

First drive down dark roads for some time last night. Oh how I miss my high beam assistant :(

Once xenons became standard with the LCI everyone stopped speccing lighting upgrades :(

I have adaptive xenons on my F11 LCI but still ****** off with BMW, halogen indicator lamps on a £50k car with the upgraded headlights. WTF?

Having said that I live in town, it's completely wasted on me :D

For me the LCI Xenons were a letdown compared to the pre LCI. Not really sure what BMW were thinking to be honest. Where they improved in any technical way?

It's because there are two levels of lighting - standard and upgraded.

Pre facelift the standard lighting were halogen bulbs and halogen indicators and the upgraded lighting was xenon bulbs and led indicators.

With the LCI they upgraded the standard lighting to xenon and the upgraded to LED.

There's 2 levels of upgraded on the F10/11 LCI - Xenon > Adaptive Xenon > Adaptive LED

Unfortunately only the adaptive LED get nice turn indicators and they were so expensive nobody ticked them! So mine are 'upgraded' but still a bit naff.

I remember now, I recall seeing a few videos of the adaptive LEDs which seemed impressive. Presumably the price was insane as an option given even basic Xenons are an improvement for most people. Can't saw I've ever noticed an LCI with LED main headlights on the road.

Pretty much everyone who wanted xenons on a pre LCI added the visibility package as it wasn't much more and came with adaptive and high beam assistant.

With the LCI there was no reason to really pay the extra as the xenons are good so few people bothered with led. The dealers were awful at upselling to adaptive on the xenons as most of them didn't realise the LCI xenon high beam assistant does the awesome beam splitting thing.

So you now have 95% of LCI cars having no upgraded lighting option. Sigh.

Standard xenon with adaptive on an LCI is epic and only cost about 350 quid too. It makes me annoyed just thinking about it.

Didn't realise that the Xenons could beam split. As you say, for the sake of £350 on a 40k vehicle it's a bit bizarre.

Actually I say bizarre, to 95% of buyers it was rational. The fault is really with BMW I guess.

You'll get real time traffic if your car was built after September 2011. Older ones don't have it. You can only browse the internet if your car has the internet option but it's crap.
Thanks :)

Is there any way of finding out when the rear wheel steering is in use? Like speed vs angle etc.

It is such a strange feeling, the pivot point feels inconsistent so is taking some getting used to but boy does it turn in sharp and tight! And nice effortless lane changes at high speeds.

I’m off to Belgium in the car early next month, is it true you don’t need to do anything with the lights to drive on the continent as the beam is flat? It looks flat in the dark but I don’t know if it’s confirmation bias convincing myself I don’t need to do anything.

Actually I just assumed they couldn't beam split either, just go high/dipped according to conditions.

Is this listed anywhere? All the BMW beam splitting videos seem to show LEDs in action so I didn't know.

Pre LCI cars just high or dip, LCI cars do beam splitting even with xenons. BMW call it anti dazzle function.

My dad's 520d has it so I've personally experienced it. Hardly anyone seems to realise.

So I've got the error codes:

2CA2 - oxygen sensor heating before catalytic converter

2CA3 - oxygen sensor heating 2 before catalytic convertor.

Ive cleared them but they have come back , I'm guessing this means I need to replace both sensors the 1 at the front and the 1 at the back? Could somebody tell me if these are the correct ones. its for a e90 318i.
