BMW Starts Technical Campaign to Fix Faulty Diesel EGR Valves in the EU
Following some technical investigations, BMW started a voluntary technical campaign in the European market to fix faulty EGR valves on four-cylinder and six-cylinder diesel engines. According to the German manufacturer, the issue could lead to the cars affected catching on fire, in the most extreme cases. Therefore, the company will recall all possibly affected vehicles, to check the valve and then fix it, if necessary.

My car (F31 320d manufactured in early 2016) looks like it'll probably be impacted. Already had the EGR replaced last year under warranty but not sure if that fixes this problem. Booked in this week after a low coolant warning to investigate / check for leaks which can be a symptom of the issue above.

MPG in idrive isn't real. I get 21.8MPG on my 240i xdrive according to fuelly, which I think is pretty good considering the idiot driving.

Just got winter tyres on, wondering if that'll get MPGz down. Unfortunately now limited to 210km/h. Sad times.
To be fair the OBC isn’t far off, mine has me as averaging 22 mpg, working it out by filling up dividing my miles by litres gives me 21.5 mpg.

Can’t see winter tyres making a huge difference tbh.

Is under the seat of a 3 series like the Bermuda Triangle? I dropped the lid of a flash drive down the side of my drivers seat, looked down the side and under within seconds but the lid is no where to be found. Looked from the passenger area, moved the seat all the forward and back and nadda.

My son is convinced he could find out so just went out and again nothing. So where the hell has it gone? Looked inside the rear vents under the seat but nothing there either.

I've managed to get the car to go into limp mode and rescanned the error, now I'm getting P0735, which apparently means Gear 5 Incorrect ratio. This could mean any of the following:

  • Low transmission fluid level
  • Dirty transmission fluid
  • Shift solenoids
  • Transmission mechanical problems
  • Transmission hydraulic control circuit
Looks like it's going to be a cheap fix or rather expensive.

Took the car to the garage this week after limping the E39 to work and back for a couple of weeks and they've advised the gearbox needs replacing.

The fault is now on all the time from start up and as such, driving to work is a bit of a mission.

I've punched the details of the car into WeBuyAnyCar, faults included, and they're offering £700. The issue is the car is riddled with scratches, marks, alloys damage and rust (commensurate with its 17 years of use), I'm just wondering if it's worth my time taking it there and seeing what they knock it down to? I've only ever taken one car to WBAC and it was practically mint.

Or do I chuck it on eBay and hope for the best? I've got access to another car in the meantime.

Ebay it for sure, WBAC are never competitive with cars like yours

Will do geekman.

I'm thinking of just starting it at 99p and leave it on for a week, loads of detail of my (brief) ownership, and photos of it cleaned up etc.

Do I advertise as spares or repair, or specifically state the gearbox fault and leave it as that?

I would put the name of the car in the title, with "spares of repair". Then simply add lots of photos and list the good points and bad points. Main bad point would obviously be the gearbox fault. Make sure you specify cash on collection etc or you'll get idiots offering PayPal / doing chargebacks etc. Start it at 99p and see what it gets: chances are some Eastern European will buy it and ship it over to their country for spares / repair.

I take it you didn’t get the transmission flushed?

It’s a gamble for sure, £300ish to do it right but no guarantee that it’ll fix the issue (although more likely than not it could well do so) unfortunately an issue that kills many a BMW 3,5 & 7 Series of that era alas.

Sod WBAC - you’ll practically pay them to have it! - get it on eBay etc.

Many thanks gents, it'll be up on eBay tomorrow afternoon. Hopefully the weather improves for some photos! I'll go with your advice geekman.

Didn't get the fluid flushed Scania, the garage didn't suggest that as an option in all fairness. If it weren't for the ease of access to another car I'd have probably gone with that option. My issue is, I suppose, is that it's just not worth very much to begin with - it's an SE, it's an auto, it's got cloth seats, part service history, and isn't close to being anywhere near a garage queen. It was a good steer for the 14 months I owned it, but now it's time to move it on. As geekman said, hopefully someone can see it to a good home on the continent!

Do you have a dashcam? there have been a few reports of either the dashcam or the USB adapter thingy causing issues?
+1

My partners f20 1 Series loses DAB almost completely if she plugs her iphone into the USB to charge it, Knights BMW Stafford seem to think this isn’t an issue....

First time out around Silverstone in the M3. Despite the new brakes and fluid, I'm still getting pad heat related fade. Having to manage the brakes at the end of long straights is a chore, so I'm going to switch to some better calipers next year. Still, very fun even taking it easy in the wet :D

Your reg doesn't start with YK does it?

Yea, same colour and age but I didn't want to out right ask if it was you

Yeah, that happened right as I was in the drivers briefing. Not good!

Snip from my PH post:

I've watched the video back a couple of times and I think there's a fair few things I could do a lot better next time out - I reckon I could have been quite a lot more committed through Brooklands and Luffield - I stayed way too tight through the latter when Ving it off would have been much better.

Given the conditions and after watching the VX220 narrowly miss the pit wall and seeing a fellow E92 M3 crashing I decided I wasn't going to push it through Woodcote or Copse. I'm most disappointed that I wasn't 20-30% more committed through Maggots and out onto the Wellington straight though.

Brake temp was an issue - after the first 7 or 8 laps building up my speed I got quite bad fade towards the end of the big stop into Brooklands and from then on I had to concentrate on managing brake temps for a few laps. After I'd got them to come back to me and I was more confident I wasn't going to collect another car on the way into any of the corners I managed a 1:25.0.

What pads/fluid did you change to? The standard pads/fluid aren't for track work at all.

I've used ATE Typ200 in several cars and found it to be amazing on track (and excellent value - £13 a litre on Amazon), even after 10 laps without a cool down! Likewise I also found Mintex M1144 pads really good on track *and* road.

Motul RBF600 fluid and Brembo HP2000 pads. Supposed to be as good as DS2500. I found 1144s to be very poor previously so discounted them.

This was definitely not fluid temperature related fade, it was definitely temperature related pad fade. I didn't go for RSL19 as if I'm going to spend that much money I will just go BBK but I did expect these Brembo pads to be loads better than they are. Plenty of people I've chatted to seemed to indicate that if you get fade on a pad like a DS2500, the Pagid pads might buy you two more laps at most. After I did the two very slow laps (after the first 7/8 of getting faster and faster) they did come back to me and were good enough on that 1:25 lap, although I reckon if I'd have tried to do another quick lap straight away I'd have been right back into horrid greasy-feeling brakes again.

Still, changing to some decent 4-pot calipers will only cost me £500 or so, might as well!
