BMW and M Power Owners

On the price - that one has £15k of options, most of which is carbon stuff which is non-essential.
For the performance on offer the price is in line with other cars : A 600bhp Hyundai EV costs £65k, a similar spec X5M costs £145k !

The new M5 is going to be circa £130k, plus options
Only £1750 is the carbon rubbish, rest is stuff like panoramic roof, blinds, heated wheel, comfort access, electric bootlid, adaptive cruise etc. Stuff I think most people would option when forking out £90k base

Yeah exactly, ioniq 5 N is £65k, has similar usable range and near half the price (no options required)
RS e-tron GT slightly higher price, quicker & lighter, drives much better by most accounts, similar range, has a custom chassis and interior
EQE 53, similar power, again entirely custom interior and exterior (still looks like a dog to me but nvm), similar price, better range

It just seems beat on all fronts, probably a factor of it not being a pure EV platform. 2.4 tonnes is also crazy even versus the above competitors

Hopefully Harry does a long term review of the latest X5 50e, as his 45e ownership reports were excellent.

Let me guess the outcome of this.
  • He complained about the lack of range, when testing a 600bhp EV during a cold week in Winter
  • He couldn’t fathom the technology
  • He probably mentions the high cost [but the £100k Land Rover Defender he reviewed last week was a good family vehicle :p]
Close?
He's about to get the new iX LCI in for a review scalding.

I think the Harry video did make some good points. £115k is outrageous -- especially given it is an ICE car with an electric motor (like my Peugeot). The range is outrageous for what was traditional a motorway mile muncher.

Throttlehouse loved it, Max @ AutoTopNL, not so much..

The latest ThrottleHouse threw a lot of FUD at battery too, quite disappointing given they are normally so well balanced.

number of cylinders and displacement aside, M340i vs 2023 C43 AMG, what are you taking? I know this is a biased thread to ask but am interested in opinions. The C43 looks amazing on paper (apart from the engine noise), especially the RWS and MBUX.

Just looking to sort insurance out for the M5 Competition. Whats it with the M5 that makes it considerably more than the E63S to insure considering they are supposed to be competing cars in that class? Last year the E63S was just over £400 but this year things have gone mad and it went up to £850 which no changes. Got a quote for the M5 and I cant find anything cheaper than just over £1200

edit: presume it’s more likely to be crashed or stolen etc. just ranting

I have not driven a C43 AMG but I have driven a C200 and I own an M340i, so hopefully my view is useful.

Firstly I don't think you can put the number of cylinders and displacement aside. The engine in the M340i is a huge part of what makes it so good and for me regardless of how good the rest of the car is, and as you'll see below I think it is really quite good, there is no place for a 2 litre 4 cylinder engine in a car of this type.

If you are looking at a 2023 M340i, then I think the C Class is the better looking car - I don't like what BMW have done with the facelift of the 3 Series. I think the 2019-2022 M340i is one of the best looking cars BMW have made for a long time and the 2022- version is a backward step from that. In this respect the C Class is clearly the winner, it is much nicer looking if you're considering a 2023 M340i. If you're not, then the M340i is as good.

The interior of the C Class is really nice but the user interface isn't as good as the BMW equivalent - the screen is better integrated on the Mercedes when looking at the 2023 M340i, but on the 2022 and earlier I much prefer the dash layout of the 3 Series. That said, the Mercedes system is probably the best system I've ever used that wasn't BMW iDrive, it's very different to the previous C Class which had arguably one of the worst systems around. I therefore wouldn't consider either to be a reason to pick or avoid the other, if that makes sense.

The M340i is also considerably cheaper than the C43 AMG. There are very few used C43 on the market anyway and many more M340i to pick from and if you are buying new the M340i has a lower list price than the C43 and is available with significant discounts from list price, which I do not believe is true of the Mercedes. From my brief research before I ruled it out it looked like a C43 would end up being at least £10k more expensive to buy.

Actually just had a look and there are quite a lot of used ones already at under £50k. That didn't take long!

There is, however, another option. The Coupe version of the C Class, which is just launching, has available in the range a 380bhp 3 litre turbo 6 cylinder engine, with almost exactly the same specifications as that in the M340i. I think therefore, if buying new, this is the car I'd get. It isn't an AMG, but is the C43 really a true AMG car either?

If it has to be a saloon or an estate, then it has to be the M340i. The engine makes that much difference.

Does the 340 scream like the c43? They did go OTT on driving sound and the fun pedal. Interior of the C isn't amazing though.

New C43 is only 4 cylinder and sounds like a vacuum cleaner. Lots of fake noise piped through to the cabin.

I personally think it’s a horrific option compared to the M340i.

New idrive does suck compared to the old one, but as a package it’s still better than the Merc by a long, long way IMO.

Also, not sure I’d want to have to deal with Mercedes.

ye - it's this CLE motor they need to put in new pretty C series estate - neighbour had one for launch

( e: meant to post it in mercedes thread - hey-ho )

Our local mercedes dealer doing a reveal for the new 2024 C class ... they just need to put this new cle 6 cylinder in it
20kwh in the hybrid, but heavy I guess.

there was but as a touch screen it was hard to use. It does work with the i-drive controls but its not great.

Wireless car play is also a bit hit and miss with it so i use wired car play. Ive got used to it now, doesnt stick out too much.

Does the car have a head up display? Not sure how you could miss a turn as it's right there in front of you projected onto the road, rather than having to look over at the screen.
Well I drove from my home (Letchworth, Herts) to work (Watford) Using the BMW satnav and I have to say I'm really impressed, very clear, zooms out at major junctions showing a good overview of the road layout ahead and direction/s

Only wish would be to have the estimated time of arrival on the HUD, not sure I can see if that is located or an option? But overall its great!

Just need to workout how to store some regular locations in, home, work, schools etc

Anyone know if an F Series NBT EVO screen can be replaced to be a touch screen varient?
I don't use the BMW nav because The iDrive wheel annoys me when selecting a destination. Would be nice to just touch it.

I don't mind the BMW Nav, It works pretty well, especially with the HUD.
