BMW and M Power Owners

My F11 530D must know that I’m thinking about replacing it. Just come out for a walk and had a low coolant warning as we pulled into the car park. Opened bonnet and there’s a load of coolant leaking on the right hand side of the engine.
Our F11 has just had an EGR recall because of this very issue, yours may fall under this as well.

The recall was done on mine around a year ago for the EGR but I do wonder whether it’s related!

The leak is coming from a split in a plastic hose to the right side of the engine, near the oil filter housing. Looks like it’s pretty common but the inlet manifold has to be removed to replace the hose unfortunately. Car was picked up by the AA in Milton Keynes and dropped at my local garage in Witney, so I’m very pleased with the cover I have on my Nationwide FlexPlus account!

£329 repair for a £30 coolant pipe due to the annoying position it’s in...

Anyway, it’s reinvigorated my search for a new car. Those with an M340i/d, which packs are worth going for? Is there a definitive list as to what each pack includes?

I think I’d like at least Comfort (preferably plus, as it’s crazy that they don’t have electric seats!) and Technology packs, and perhaps the Visibility pack of the laser lights really make much difference (quite a bit of my driving is on country roads to and from work). Annoyingly, the vast majority of the tourings I’ve seen have the shadowline pack which I’m not a great fan of.

I wanted at least Technology Pack (head up display and upgraded stereo) and visibility pack. The benefit of the visibility pack is it has the adaptive high beam, the lasers are just a bonus. The visibility pack also gives you the much better daytime running lights which look great.

I also ended up with Comfort pack but to be honest whilst it's nice to have I wouldn't have made it a requirement. It is the most common pack though so the only cars I really saw without it had either no other other packs at all or just the technology pack.

Comfort Plus would have been great to get rid of the manual seats but it just made it too difficult to find a car especially as like you I absolutely didn't want the pack with the black wheels etc which ruled out at least 50% of cars and almost every very high specification car with all the options packs.

I have Comfort Plus, Technology Plus and the visibility pack. I also have the pano roof which is a welcome option on the Touring and one that I love with the way it floods the interior with light. It took me a while to find the right car, in my preferred colour (Dravit) with my preferred options at the right price and with a sensible mileage. But I hung fire until this one came up and I'm glad I had the patience

Mine has the Shadowline trim which not everyone appreciates, including gloss black 791M alloys but I think it works well together with the Dravit grey paint and the Fiona Red extended leather, although it did take a while for me to decide I definitely liked it.

The heated steering wheel is one of those things that you wouldn't miss unless you've tried it, and although the Driving Assistant Professional is useful on long motorway journeys, I'd rate Parking Assistant Plus as more useful for the 360 camera views.

For me, the Laser lights I find are utterly fantastic. We live in a very rural area off the beaten track and unlit B roads around my area are a doddle at night with the Lasers.

Electric seats, I could take or leave as it's rare for anyone other than me to drive the car so I rarely touch them.

The HUD is superb and personally I'd miss it if I moved to a car without one.

Small points - be aware that if you go for an LCI M340, the Laser lights aren't an option anymore. Adaptive Drive Mode was also removed too.

I love Driving Assistant Pro and use it in pretty much any situation with traffic - city traffic, congested A roads, as well as motorway driving. It's a brilliant system that just takes the hassle out of non fun (ie most of the time :( ) driving situations. Going without it would be a tough trade off at this point.

Considering letting the M5C go when the warranty is up. Only put 15k on it since new. (missed our Euro trip last year so doing a big one this year, away for a month) I can be talked out of it though with a decent bumper to bumper warranty

Is the BMW one the one to go for? Tried to get a price online but as its still under warranty it would quote

Given it's the only one that uses BMW technicians at BMW dealers using official BMW parts, and you get a courtesy car too, it's the only one worth it.

It’s the only one worth having.

You should get a letter through with a renewal code, that’ll give you a discount. Wait for that to arrive. If there’s no sign of it then call BMW.

Just took out a BMW Insured warranty on my M340i. Reasonable price to pay for the peace of mind. I'd imagine for an M5C its likely to cost more than a 3 series, but I think the price structure is of a menu type. As an example, these are the 3 series options:-

A good tip for checking warranty costs is to find a car similar to yours (age and model) on the BMW AUC site: https://usedcars.bmw.co.uk/

Then put the reg in here, but with your own mileage: https://www.bmw-warranty.co.uk/

Spec doesn't make any difference.

I'm not sure what the renewal discount is, but maybe 15-20%, so take that off. That'll give you an idea of cost.

I've just done the above with a Jan 2021 M5C, and for Comprehensive/£250 excess/Roadside, it's showing as £1590.00 per year. So with the code, I'd guess around £1300.

Have I been conned then, as I paid £557 for Comprehensive with roadside assistance, with £250 excess?!
