BMW and M Power Owners

The F90 is biblically quick, there's one around here that likes to show me just how quick now and then, the F80 M3 is no slouch but that thing just disappears.

@ChrisD. How much did you pay for your upgraded lights on the M3? How much was fitment?

I’m thinking of doing the same as the boggo LEDs on the 340i are dire, it feels like I’ve got a candle at the front of the car :P

Found a pair for just over £1,000, plus I’ll need them fitting (already have HBA on the car, so just headlight swap and coding)

It was £2.5k for the lights and modules, around £2-300 for fitting (hard to judge as I had the front shock dust covers replaced at the same time), and £50 for coding.

Is your car an F model? £1k is suspiciously cheap for LCI Icons /w modules.

Thanks for the info. Yeah an F30.

From what I understand, it’s just headlights I need - the LED ballasts and control modules are the same on each of the headlights.

Icons aren’t available for the F30, it’s just standard adaptive LED from what I can tell.

Trying to gauge whether it’s worth giving it a go. 2 red flags for me are the fact that the headlights are super clean (like, factory clean) and that the eBay seller wants to do the sale in person off eBay.

But they do have 100% feedback and have specialise in selling car parts.

Have you double checked you have the right camera ?

Highbeam assist on its own uses a lower quality camera located under the rear view mirror in the car where I think the adaptive LEDs need the KaFUS camera that is also used for lane assist and speed limit sign recognition.

They are, they were the upgraded headlight option, with the normal LED lights standard fit.

But surely every 340i would have at least the standard LED lights with the upgraded option being the Icon LED headlights?

So it's not clear what you're upgrading to if it isn't the icon?

Ah I thought the Icon headlights were a reference to change in DRL, like on the M2/M3 when you get Icons. On the 3 series they look the same, pretty much.

So for clarity, I have standard LEDs (just the standard reflector), and I'm looking to upgrade to the fully adaptive system which has twice the number of LEDs per headlight (split reflector).

I've also been surprised at just how much of a conversation starter it is when out and about, in the last six-months I've had 15+ either full on conversations with strangers at petrol stations or car parks or more brief people just saying "nice car" and a few times I've spotted people taking a photo - this is not something I expected at all -
The car has presence. An M5 just does it for me in a way that Ferraris or McLaren's don’t.

A friend has a facelift in what I think is called snapper rocks blue? Followed him to a meeting in a 520d(same model year) parked up behind him on the street… When we came out the meeting, there was a group of teenagers taking photos. Anyway, he drove off, I followed, the lads were videoing and I’ve never felt so invisible in my life :D

Same sentiment from him, incredible car, beyond capable but no drama.

I've got the icon adaptive LEDs on my F36 440i
Doesn't need the kafas, mine's just the bog standard HBA cam and adaptives work just fine.

I'd often read people online talk about cars having "too much power for the roads" which I generally dismissed as a slightly absurd comment...

Well... I'm coming up to over six months of F90 M5 ownership and I now know what those people meant!

I absolutely the love the car. Being slightly unusual in loving big saloon cars since I could drive and having owned various diesel saloons over the years, I don't think anything else would have been sufficient to satisfy my desire, than the ultimate super-saloon that is the M5 with a roaring V8.

The feel good factor of ownership is intangible, just walking up to it and firing it up each morning is a joy. I've also been surprised at just how much of a conversation starter it is when out and about, in the last six-months I've had 15+ either full on conversations with strangers at petrol stations or car parks or more brief people just saying "nice car" and a few times I've spotted people taking a photo - this is not something I expected at all - presumed that kind of stuff only happened with Ferraris etc but it's been nice nonetheless.

Now... back to the power bit... the limit of this car just cannot be reached or even remotely reached on the road. You can absolutely hammer the pedal and press on and the car just responds "is that it... MORE". It's very difficult to describe but it feels like unlimited power.

I've read about it online as I presumed to some degree it could just be me as I come from a line of 3.0 diesel Mercs, Jags etc. so I'm not a seasoned 600bhp+ V8 twin-turbo owner. But there seems to be a general consensus online of similar bewilderment of the amount of power - not that anyone anticipates an M5 to be slow but its more so the relentless power delivery.

This is all amazing technically and on paper, but when you turn on to a country lane smash the pedal and you're at 95+ in next to no time with almost no drama and the car still doesn't even feel remotely stretched... thing get to licence losing speeds very quickly.

Absolutely no regrets in purchasing as if I didn't it would've always been a "why didn't I do it!"... I anticipated keeping this for 2-3 years but in the next 6-12 months I'll be considering alternatives...

If anyone has made a similar move would be interested in what you went for.
I bought my M5C new. Its just over 3 years old now, Just bought the extended warranty. The thing has been faultless since new. Had the recall for the expansion tank before it needed it but thats it.

What surprised me about getting used to the power was that you weren't catapulted to the horizon but more the horizon time warped into your face ala Star Trek.

We go on a European road trip for about 5 weeks every summer. Spend a couple of weeks in a villa or two but most of it is spent exploring and stretching its legs across the Pyrenees etc.

I'm at the point were I'm starting to look for its replacement but nothing is going to come close and tick the same boxes as the M5C does.

I've been eyeing a Mclaren 600LT but would also need a daily and we'll definetly not be able to load the Mclaren up for a 5 week road trip like we do the M5. Boot full and then the back seats too.

I was considering the New M5, leaning towards the Touring but whilst mental fast and very comfortable and to be honest fairly rare, Theres just no sense of occasion with them. Although the BIK draw with the new one looks good.

I have adaptive xenons on my F23 and they box out on high beam.

Yes, all singing and dancing moving headlights too
Maybe it's different on the M3 then, my understanding is you need the additional camera on the front for a retrofit if the car doesn't already have adaptive LEDs. My car has lane assist/blindspot/collision detection etc so it wasn't an issue, straight swap plus coding.

Not too sure, my icon adaptives were specced from factory so I guess already coded/sorted, unless that HBA camera is actually a kafas?

The HBA only camera is inside the car under the rear view mirror. KAFUS camera is attached to the windscreen with the auto wiper sensor.

HBA camera

KAFUS camera varies in design between models some only have one rather than two but always attached to the windscreen.

Surprised the adaptive LEDs works with the lower quality camera as when I was looking for a F31 I looked at the guides at the time they all said it needed the KAFUS camera to retrofit. I found a F31 with adaptive headlights so didn’t need to do a retrofit in the end, it had speed limit display aswell and a KAFUS camera.

It was 2017 I last properly checked so it may be the guides were wrong at the time as it was common if it had adaptive headlights it would usually have a good spec which would include lane assist or speed limit display with the better camera.
