Getting a lovely rattle from what appears to be the disa valve. Done a bit of light research but nothing major, has anyone had and fixed this issue?

Not having much luck at the moment are you buddy!!

Didn't have any actual problems with my DISA valve but did remove it to check for play. It's incredibly easy to get out..we're talking a couple of Torx screws and an electrical connector.

There are repair kits out there to fix the rattle, but some people recommend replacing the whole unit as in addition to the valve there's also a vacuum-activated diaphragm in there which can perish with age and cause issues.

Take it out and check that the mechanism actually still works ( the diaphragm rather than flap as above). If so then just buy one of the machined repair kits - these also change the end pin design so it can't break off which can't be a bad thing.

was about 60 quid from memory from i6

I removed my DISA a while ago and fixed it up using glue and plumbers tape. Worked for about a year but I have a rattle again so can't recommend bodging it :P

Has anyone fitted their e39/e46 with a 1.2/1.4bar expansion tank cap to replace the standard 2bar cap? From what I've read it can significantly prolong the life of the cooling system and if you get to the boiling temp (120 vs 138 iirc) then there is already something else seriously wrong. Seems like a no brainer?

Winter and 10 year old cars, I could kid myself as much as I liked but I knew it would happen sooner or later!! Lol.

Thanks for the input all, will take a look at it shortly and see what's what then check out repair kits/new parts.

That's something else on the to do list along with oil filter housing gasket and oil level sensor lol, thankfully all quite cheap :)

Edit: rodenal is this the kit you mean?

I've got an oil filter housing gasket you can have for free if you like Vox, purchased it for my old engine before it went boom but never got around to fitting it. Can't remember how much they are from BMW but it's yours if you like :)

I'd be interested to hear how you get on with the DISA rebuild kit from i6, it's one of the things I'd be looking to do in the new year.

Am facing my first major service time on my E89 Z4 (variable but the stars have aligned on several items) and just straight up asked for a discount and got 15% on oil/air/brake fluid/check/pollen (under warranty so at a stealer) which I still feel I got robbed for considering the ease of these activities - anyone know what is the best that's possible to get as a discount? I figure there was untapped potential in the price I got of £550 if you know what I mean. I asked 3 garages, they all came back initially within £10 of each other.

You could use http://www.maindealerdiscount.com/ and use that as a bargaining tool if the garages shown are too far away. I used it against a brake fluid change from Sytner who couldn't quite match the cheapest, but did knock a decent amount of the prices they initially claimed were their best.

That's the one, its good quality stuff

Cheers, will take it apart to have a look and get it ordered :)

You are a saint! They're only a tenner or so I believe, I'll send you an email with an address and send me over some bank/paypal details so I can give you postage costs/beer money :)

Are they not? Thought I'd seen them before in others, could well be wrong though. Obviously not 'standard', but a factory option from BMW I thought.

tbh I don't know much about the M5 so most likely they are a standard/optional by BMW, but not nice at all, if its a good car for the money, I guess you could strip them out and swap them for some nice black leather, but all depends if you like that type of thing I guess. :D

No problems at all - it's just sitting in a box at home along with loads of other random bits I've accumulated so getting rid would probably be doing me a favour :p

Just to confirm I've got the right bit, is it number 6 on the below that you need?

This is an excellent site, thanks. Closest quote is 90 miles away unfortunately but it is £60 cheaper.
